Tinted moisturiser recommendations please
It’s been a while so I will start us off…….whats for supper and why?
Okay, it was suggested on a different thread that a new thread should be started about this, so here goes.
So do we need a monarchy today? That’s it really.

That was to Jaxie.
I think there is a lot of ignorance regarding finances generally.
Too right Callistemon.
What’s wrong with the Irish system where the President is nominated and then chosen by proportional representation, to put it simply?
Constant bloody elections.

Oh, not the Irish President again!!
???
Who nominates candidates for the Irish Presidency Farzanah?

We are lucky some people are not allowed to vote or have their vote overran.
Oh I see, senators. It’s all political nominations.
The current President Michael D Higgins doesn’t seem to be doing very well.

^Some might think it's not the best institution we have^
But, with all the perceived faults, it is better than any alternative suggested so far (which is nebulous to say the least as no-one can suggest any person who would be suitable).
I literally named 2, but I guess you didn't like them.
Anyway, its clear on here that the propaganda is working still.
The only person who spoke any sense in the pandemic was the Queen? Not Chris Whitty, Van Tam, Prof Gilbert...?
The Queen wanted to work despite having Covid? What kind of example is that? The rest of us are told to take it easy and recover, not battle through it.
Remove their titles? They can call themselves what they like, we're not advocating beheading. We're advocating a modern democracy.
We've done it this way since 1066? Time for a change then. We used to have slavery and bear baiting, but we realise that probably those weren't good things, all in all. Incidentally it was 700 and something, not 1066.
But never mind, President Trump, eh? "Trumps" all other arguments, eh?
Would folks want to be moved from the areas they live in to live in flats that have been converted from ancient buildings with antiquated facilities in the middle of nowhere?
Its getting really weird now...
Buckingham Palace is basically just a slum, thank god the RF agree to live there so the rest of us don't have to.

Oh I know. All this democracy business is just over rated, isn't it?
Bl**dy suffragettes, should have stayed at home.
It is funny how some people regard the prospect of electing a head of state as something to be dreaded, but then I suppose there have always been those who questioned and opposed every step that was taken towards democracy. Slaves who thought it was OK to be owned by someone because some owners were benevolent, serfs who thought the feudal system was OK, those who thought only certain people should have the vote because others, because of their sex, education or social position were unfit to choose. It is incredible that we still have someone as Head of State who just happens to inherit the role. By all means have a monarchy if you must but let's make it purely decorative. Let's withdraw from it any involvement in law making, Parliament, international relations or any other process which matters to the people of this country. If they want they can continue with their charitable work, but my guess is they wouldn't do so. Because although we may profess that the monarch doesn't have any part in the legislative process there is evidence that even the Queen (she who is above suspicion) has used her influence to change laws to suit the RF. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/feb/08/royals-vetted-more-than-1000-laws-via-queens-consent
It's time we had a proper elected H of S who could ensure that the unwritten constitution was protected and who we could kick out if they started using their position to feather their family nest.
Have you ever visited these old relics ? Only parts of them can be lived in.
Hmm. Are you Ok with the extent of David Attenborough’s personal wealth? Earned and inherited.
I think he’s a hypocrite spouting about Climate change and conservation and then carting himself, film crews and all the supporting entourage around the world, creating a mass of pollution and disturbing environments in order to accumulate even more millions for himself.
Just the kind of mentality for a President.
Lets just say I find it hard to worry about the state of the RF's many houses when people in the country are living like this.

I don't care how rich he is.
I don't care how rich Queen Elizabeth is.
But given you think that David Attenborough is a hypocrite I guess I now know what I'm up against, in terms of my interlocutors having a grasp on reality.
Funny. That’s just what I was going to say?

I bet they were fighting for the right to vote in two elections!
The local one and the general election.
Now we have town, county, devolved parliament, police and crime commissioners, mayors, MPs, referenda
I wouldn't mind voting for an upper House though

Funny no one on here suggesting what would replace the Monarchy, a constitutional one. Remember Ollie Cromwell, didn’t end well. Unless you go the French /Russian way and have state sponsored murder, be careful what you wish for.
Maybe we could opt for a Putin type leader, or Donald Trump or worst of all President Blair!
Er….how many times has this been said on this thread?
Trisher. People do not dread voting for a head of state, they are just content with our current form of democracy.
Your comment "I suppose there have always been those who questioned and opposed every step that was taken towards democracy." is simply rot. We have a form of democracy - and they all vary - that the vast majority don't want to change. Your opinion is worth no more, or less than anyone else's but it is a minority view.
Your next line which starts "Slaves who thought it was OK to be owned by someone because some owners were benevolent ..." sounds like the doublespeak coming out of Russia at the moment. Perhaps some Putinitus is going round.
The Queen is a constitutional monarch. She does not make decisions on how our country is run. We are under more threat from the current government than from her. I certainly think some will think we have moved closer to the dark ages after their time in power.
I see your off-topic posts goes on at length so no point in replying to the rest. When we have someone pontificating on how the Queen running the country takes us back to the dark ages I know we have arrived in la-la land.
WE dont vote for Police or Crime commisioners OR Mayors ,thats a level of local government we dont have or want ,Council ,Holyrood and Westminster elections ..or at least thats the ones I vote in .Did you get asked about the Mayors and Police and Crime Commissioners ..is that ONE job or two?
Our Police service cut back on top jobs ,there were too many old guys with yards of gold braid on their jackets being drien in luxury cars by chauffeurs .We replaced some of those with extra feet on the streets ,Oh and crime is at a 40 year low
The question here is what would we have instead. Or who? Do we want a revolving door of people of different political persuasions because most likely they would be politicians. We would know their politics. The monarchy isn't really about people, it's about the institution. Royal family is like the key stone at the top of the arch, take it away and the stsbilities gone. The royals bring in the tourists as well. It would be the biggest example ever of you don't know what you've got till you lose it.
