Okay, it was suggested on a different thread that a new thread should be started about this, so here goes.
So do we need a monarchy today? That’s it really.

Perhaps we should ask :do we want a Monarchy rather than do we do need a Monarchy.
The thing is we have a Monarchy, the RF cannot help who they any more than the rest of us can .

First thing I learnt in Philosophy of Religion. Most people’s religion depends on where and when they were born. E.g. born in the R of I, more likely to be Roman Catholic. The family you are born into is what you are, until and unless you choose to change, reject your family.

Germany doesn't have a monarchy, they're quite balanced.

Many people don't even think about alternatives because all we've ever had for the last 70 years is a stable monarchy.

Let's see what happens next.

They were only a united country with a monarchy for about 50 years before The Kaiser Wilhelm IIso had no established history of a a monarchy.
Unlike the British RF, which is only constitutional, they had powers in of government which led to WW1, which ultimately ended in its demise.

Superfluous The there!

Okaay..

But none of that changes the fact that Germany today is a stable republic that doesn't need a monarchy....

I think it works because they haven't had centuries of a monarchical system, they were disparate states until about 50 years before unifying under a monarch.
The monarchs soon proved to be disastrous and were disposed of.
Then came division under the Soviets - not exactly a longstanding history or example of a stable Republican country

It is outdated and in 2022 another scandle on top of that absolute idiot Andrew ( I would'nt call him " prince" ) he has demonstrated over years his sense of entitlement and privilidge. It is an insult in today's society with people barely able to feed their families etc ,foodbanks- clothesbanks etc etc. So the Andrew saga is somehow " bought" off then along comes comes the Charles enquiry into cash for ? Charles for King , please he is so far removed from society - privilege comes to mind. Camila ? not much a roll model there ! as for King & Queen in the twenty first century, an absolute insult to the rest of us. They have proven to us all that they are no better than the rest of us. Privilege, entitlement get rid of
all but William & Kate. A new look for a younger society with William to head a more modern " monarchy". A last thought for all the Royalists out there
If the queen is such a "solid "person, as a mother let alone the monarch should she not have ordered her son to prove his innocence by cooperating with the FBI etc. Then there is the question - if she gave a " donation" to help her son pay his legal bill would that not constitute buying his way out of a crime ? Praise it any way you want to but that is what it could be interpratated as. Lastly as a Scotsman but not supporting independence I hasten to add you can appreciate my frustration with the thought of yet another Sassenach being the Duke of Edinburgh. Disgrace to say the least. A figure head with William as " King, sounds good.

Germansshepherdsmum has chosen an apt moniker; those dogs were the chosen enforcers of the SS. Please don’t equate socialism with communism.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 06-Mar-22 18:04:02

Eh? What? I have had German shepherd rescue dogs for years. It has nothing to do with my political leanings. A wonderful and very loyal and intelligent breed.

Anniebach Sun 06-Mar-22 18:06:27

Gosh, I didn’t know dogs were into politics,

Iam64 Sun 06-Mar-22 18:11:35

Eh up! My politics are opposite to GSM but- I’m sure she loves her dog, a fantastic breed, loyal, very trainable and in my experience fabulous family pets. It’s nit their fault the SS exploited them

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 06-Mar-22 18:40:35

Thanks Iam. My doggy is entirely neutral when it comes to politics. She never enquires as to the political allegiances of the postman or delivery people, treats all of them as enemies unless the contrary is proven by proper introduction. Mind you, the postman does wear a red jacket ... and she can't stand him ...

Some Good points Sonestarick

But not William and Kate it will be same Monarchy is broken can't be fixed. RF do not uphold or defend our unwritten constitution nor any checks on government. Monarchy HoS can only do what PM asks. So is pointless and powerless.

A reminder that we pay Charles £22m a year, which is six times the combined salaries of all democratically elected heads of state in Europe.

The Duchy of Cornwall refuses to pay Corporation tax, even though it is a major commercial enterprise. Charles has made various excuses for this, which often contradict each other and which don't hold up to scrutiny.

Why isn't Charles allowed to do a live interview with a competent journalist?

Prince Charles: 15-page contract reveals how the Prince of Wales tries to control the media
Behind the soft-focus image you see on television lies a ruthless machine that demands control of every aspect of interviews

Prince Charles is demanding “North Korean-style” pre-conditions in television interviews, including advance knowledge of precise questions, the right to oversee editing and even to block a broadcast if he does not approve of the final product.

Not so strict interview rules with PAndrew ????

Anniebach Mon 07-Mar-22 12:23:53

How unusual, not trusting the media

I hear The Queen has given up living in BP. Presumably she will divide her time between Windsor Castle and Sandringham. I wonder what will become of BP? A museum perhaps? Have read suggestions of an hotel but can't imagine that.

Callistemon21 Mon 07-Mar-22 16:52:40

Buckingham Palace are the offices of State.
It's not been a home as such for years.

Callistemon21 Mon 07-Mar-22 16:52:58

Is not are!
