Do we need the monarchy in this day and and age?

Okay, it was suggested on a different thread that a new thread should be started about this, so here goes.
So do we need a monarchy today? That’s it really.

We do not really need a monarchy - but what to replace it with? I look at countries with presidents and think we could do worse.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 01-Mar-22 12:17:53

So you believe Johnson? That has to be a first.

I am not sure how you came to that conclusion! How could anyone support Johnson let alone "believe in" him, whatever that means?

I have no doubt that HM has been in touch with the Ukrainian PM Grany.
This isn’t a war in Europe btw. And the UK is only involved via its membership of NATO. It would not be appropriate for the Queen to make a public statement - it would only serve to provoke Putin further.

I'm not sure why you say this isn't a war in Europe. Before it started even Johnson said Russia was planning "the biggest war in Europe since 1945".

But we keep being told on GN that everything he says is a lie, DaisyAnne

No we keep being told, correctly, that he tells a lot of lies. Would any of his supporters care to deny that?

It would make life easy to have Johnson as a bellwether and just automatically believe the opposite of everything he says.

Unfortunately life’s not that easy, which is why – even on GN – when people say that Johnson has lied, they mostly give evidence.

Not sure you’ll find any Johnson supporters here Petera. Conservatives yes, but not Johnson supporters.

There are one or two, but I believe you're broadly correct.

So can we believe some of what he says, then Petera?

Which bits?

Of course he knew - Cummings kept him up-to-date as he knew what was going on in Russia.

Callistemon21 Tue 01-Mar-22 14:50:54

ps it could be part of a cunning plan - Cummings see himself as the future President of the Soviet satellite state of the Disunited Kingdom.

Now I'm confused! I thought it was Corbyn who was going to hand us over to the Soviets confused. Is nothing and no one what they seem to be now? H-e-l-p

Well for example this morning he said

This whole misadventure by Vladimir Putin has raised questions about the security of Europe and what we do.

But I'm having trouble understanding what you’re getting at. Even Pinocchio told the truth sometimes.

All of the posters saying that they don't want an elected president because we might end up with Boris or Trump.

We might end up with Zelinskyy.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 01-Mar-22 16:25:19

Or Putin.

So let me think...

We could choose a head of state that leads his people from the front in a struggle against autocracy, or we could have a head of state that has someone else to break in her shoes for her in case her feet get sore.

No conferring. I'm going to have to hurry you...

A lot of people on here showing their ignorance - there is NO Soviet Union any longer , Russians are NOT “the Soviets”, Russia is NOT ruled by the Communist Party, so no one can “ hand us over to the soviets”- they don’t exist!!

But you still go on N. Read the nurse, I was simply putting an example on that you might find easier to understand.

I fail to see how an irrelevant example would help explain something. That would just confuse my little brain further.

Perhaps you could answer Petera whose comments you conveniently ignored.

Nothing to do with ignorance everything to do with having a sense of humour.

trisher “Nothing to do with ignorance everything to do with having a sense of humour.“
Shows a very weak sense of humour calling Russia the non existent Soviet Union . Not sure why that is considered funny.

Perhaps those of us who have been called communists and who remember all the comments about Corbyn are just sharing "in" jokes. If you don't get it, you don't get it.
Still nothing to do with ignorance.

Also perhaps because the full title was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, not the Soviet Union.

Was Prince Charles right to speak out against #Putin? We'll discuss this and much more on the brand new edition of #royal talk show Palace Confidential. FREE TO VIEW via @mailplus from about 5pm on Thursday. mailplus.co.uk/edition/news/royals/159275/prince-charles-links-ukrainian-democratic-values-to-those-of-sir-david-amess

If the answer is no the system really is broken. The idea the head of state (or head of state to be) is required to be silent on all issues is daft. The problem is that royals must be silent on most issues because they're not representative or accountable. #AbolishTheMonarchy

A reminder that we pay Charles £22m a year, which is six times the combined salaries of all democratically elected heads of state in Europe. #AbolishTheMonarchy

How can Charles Windsor defend democracy and an open society?

Lovetopaint037 Thu 03-Mar-22 10:29:50

Yes. For all the positives but also to have a balanced government style. That is a Monarchy, A Government and the Voters.

volver Thu 03-Mar-22 10:35:05

Germany doesn't have a monarchy, they're quite balanced.

Many people don't even think about alternatives because all we've ever had for the last 70 years is a stable monarchy.

Let's see what happens next.

Bridgeit Thu 03-Mar-22 18:53:13

Perhaps we should ask :do we want a Monarchy rather than do we do need a Monarchy.
The thing is we have a Monarchy, the RF cannot help who they any more than the rest of us can .
