The Nextdoor App - thoughts? ?

Hello
Yesterday I downloaded the Nextdoor app, and did all the necessary doings.

It’s not the first time I’ve done it; the previous time it mildly freaked me out and I deleted it.

I feel quite uncomfortable with my full name being on show; and I’ve been inundated by men (only men) wanting to ‘connect’.

I’ve had a pleasant chat with a lady regarding my need for a cleaner, so that’s one positive.

What are your experiences with Nextdoor?
Thank you smilebrew

Doodledog I think that 4allweknow probably meant me

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 11:35:45

And DH has never done social
media or anything like that.
The scamster just used our address and business name because he was aware of it as a neighbour

Scribbles
We had Streetlife here too it was good but when we were told
it was changing to Nextdoor,a few of us started the sign up process but when it started asking for real names and addresses Etc mostly everyone I knew deleted the app.
I felt like you I didn’t want my information to be public.
One of the local guys started a FB page just for our area similar to Streetlife. no one is allowed to join unless they can prove they live in the area but no last names or addresses it’s worked
very well

I did have it but found it clunky and awful to use so deleted it.

I have found it to be mildly informative but not great.

I get a weekly digest of posts, which to be honest, I rarely read. However, I've just had a look this morning and I was horrified to see that one person has posted asking for a recommendation with their full name, house number and road on his post..

Having read some of the comments here, I want to delete my profile, but I can't find anywhere on the website to do it. I can't even find proper details of my profile, as I seem to get stuck in a loop.

Is it like the Hotel California? You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 12:27:05

HurdyGurdy click the three dots at the bottom of the page; go into settings; go into my account.

You hopefully can cancel there.

But you will need to know your password.
I don’t know my password (I don’t actually recall setting one) and now it won’t accept the new password. ?

Ive just received a letter promoting this in my area, I’d not heard if it before but one of my DD’s signed up and has already spotted people naively posting far too many personal details , full names, where they live how long they’ve lived there etc, a bit worrying. Also quite a few people trying to sell stuff including small pets!! I’m giving it a miss.

I have tried unsuccessfully, several times, to unsubscribe from this. Has anyone managed to do this?

HurdyGurdy Sun 27-Feb-22 12:34:32

Thank you FannyCornforth

I think I've done it now, I found a "deactivate account" button, but didn't have to put in a password.

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 12:34:41

I successfully unsubscribed when I originally joined about 4 years ago.
Straight away I had misgivings.

As I mentioned upthread, the only reason I joined again is because I thought that it might be good for finding a cleaner

Ours is fairly innocuous, mai ly recommendations for trades folk, I did make contact with someone from my past an d caught up a bit, someone wRned me against a particular trDsman, I lent a gardening tool, not seen my address on there or even my post ode

rainbowqueen Sun 27-Feb-22 12:39:35

I'm on it and find it very useful for all sorts of local information, like road closures, warnings of local crimes, and just general day to day bits and pieces. I've also sold quite a few items for cash and not had any problems.
You can change your name on there too. Most of the locals here leave their first name and use the initial of their surname, like for instance if your name is Ann Smith (apologies of there are any Ann Smiths on here!) you can change your name to Ann SSS, so no-one knows who you are unless you tell them. Good luck, it's worth it.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 27-Feb-22 12:42:47

All I see on our local one is lost cats, moaning about bins and suspicious looking men.

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 12:45:17

Moaning about bins?
Now that’s my type of thing WW!

Yes, suspicious looking men are in abundance here

Betty18 Sun 27-Feb-22 12:45:48

I have found it useful for info on my area and help if I need to find a tradesman. But oh my goodness the petty arguments on there! Usually parking issues . But if I’m honest it’s quite fascinating how peoples minds work.

Purplepixie Sun 27-Feb-22 12:46:11

I’ve never heard of it, what is it?

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 12:52:26

A pound shop Facebook Purplepixie

MissAdventure Sun 27-Feb-22 13:04:04

I've had some much needed help from a few people on 'Nextdoor'.
Photocopying done by a complete stranger (over 30 documents)
Lifts to hospital appointments, and so on.
I have a lady I pass on boys clothes on to, who looks after a little family who need a lot of help.
What's not to like?
The whole idea of the site is to build up community networks.

I was on it for a while butvdid not find it useful. The area it covered was not really local in my case. Places where I've lived recently have had WhatsApp groups where the membership is controlled by an administrator.

Rileysnana Sun 27-Feb-22 13:05:34

It's been ok for me. Found a handyman to do some jobs around the house for me. Get to find out anything that has happened locally too. Nobody has contacted me at all.

BlueBelle Sun 27-Feb-22 13:27:52

What’s not to like is someone knowing where you live if you don’t live in a particularly affluent area missadventure

MissAdventure Sun 27-Feb-22 13:31:48

You can just have it set to "north", or change it each time, or just lie.
It doesn't give your address.

AreWeThereYet Sun 27-Feb-22 13:32:59

I joined our local one a long time ago but it wasn't used much by anyone. I just use the local FB group for checking on local happenings. Very useful recently for finding out which roads were blocked by fallen trees/fences/bus stops and when they were reopened.
