You don't have to give your name, either, unless there is actually someone called Bill Abong living in my vicinity.

The Nextdoor App - thoughts? ?
(136 Posts)Hello
Yesterday I downloaded the Nextdoor app, and did all the necessary doings.
It’s not the first time I’ve done it; the previous time it mildly freaked me out and I deleted it.
I feel quite uncomfortable with my full name being on show; and I’ve been inundated by men (only men) wanting to ‘connect’.
I’ve had a pleasant chat with a lady regarding my need for a cleaner, so that’s one positive.
What are your experiences with Nextdoor?
Thank you

Ok I am a bloke so no men have tried to chat me up, and I use an alias that clarifies which gender I am and how local people will recognise me (*the bagpipe man*).
I first went on because people had heard me play and wondered why and how I was taking this up in retirement. I have found it very positive for the very local area and have actually got a few gigs through it, although that was not my plan.
A few of the threads, like GN, are contentious, but I do not contribute to those. The interface can be a bit flakey on my iPad and I have never put the app on my phone, but I do find out about local traffic problems, and identify up coming vandalism issues that might interfere with my life, so I think, on the whole, it is more useful than not.
I stopped using Next Door for the same reasons as already stated. In our neighbourhood we have a very unpleasant man who is on Next Door, and who uses it to ‘connect’ with vulnerable women.
He is involved with several local groups, and whenever his name appears, the neighbourhood ladies boycott that group! Pity, because the anonymity of Streetwise made it very useful.
I’ve used NND for a couple of years and only have positives to report. During the pandemic there was a lot of local people willing to shop or collect medicines and details of testing and vaccination centres. I’ve been given a couple of mobility aids after someone advertised them which has made life easier whilst waiting for the OT assessment. There’s lots of local info re events and warnings re scams and crimes. A really useful app for me
Definitely don't put up a photo, you don't want people knowing who you are! I find it useful for alerting people when robbers are around, e.g. people will post a Ring doorbell photo of dodgy hawkers doing the rounds, or CCTV shots of chancers trying car door handles at night. Also handy for recommendations for local tradesmen, but always be aware that the glowing testimonials may be from their families!
The only thing that bothers me about it is the obsession with dog poo, and the endless complaints about people hanging poo bags on bushes.
So what does it do that FB local sites don’t do ?
It’s just a duplicate then
You did have to give an address and name so maybe they ve corrected that which is good but I don’t need it as all the things mentioned are already available for me
Thank you for the warning .
If I do it I'll use an alternative name.
I'm really not keen .
There are so many dishonest people out there and sex pests too !
How do these people find out so many personal details about you ?
Recently getting a late night taxi back from the hospital the driver asked me to marry him ! He stood on the forecourt and wouldn't go .
I had to pretend that I live with my male relatives.
I was completely unnerved .
I now have invented male cousins and brothers ,who annoy me with their demands for clean laundry and meals rather than admit that I live alone with my ailing father !
I am on Nextdoor and my area seems very wide, certainly not nearby but people several miles away. I find it fascinating in a morbid way as it seems to be largely really needy people posting obsessively about nothing much, over and over again ! Also people disclosing vey personal information as others have said and I have more than once sent a personal message pointing out that it isn’t really a small group of very local people reading.
You can set your own parameters depending on how near or far you're interested in.
I get rid of any furniture items to charity, as the amount sold for online isn't worth it! I use local ones and one named EMMAUS who collects and then sells from their warehouses, they help those who cannot afford basics too withc donation pieces as well as selling.i feel sense of well-being if I donate.funny isn't it?
In early 2000 I got taxi home from works X"do" and the Asian driver asked if I wanted to go out for a drink!! I asked if he was serious? And did he not think it wrong to ask a married woman out? He aid "no why?" So I said "hang on then I'll go get a pen for your number" pre mobile really. I went into house got my wonderful policeman hubby to come out and persuade the driver that he really was on extremely thin ice..........we reported him as well and he was dismissed from the official town taxis. Bloody cheek! I also rang round to tell other local firms about his disgusting habits! Life's an absolute minefield for women isn't it?! Imaging if blokes were constantly accosted and challenged while going about their lawful business? They'd explode!
I have found the app very informative and useful for local tradesmen that have been recommended by people that live local, I have been a member on there for 2 years and have had no issues, I have been lucky to only chat with nice, helpful neighbours.
I live in the US, and have had the Nextdoor app for 5 years or so. I have never had a problem with unwanted communications. Our address is listed only as the general neighborhood that we live in, and many people have just their first name and last initial show in their posts. It is useful for finding local businesses, lost pets, and neighborhood news. There is a lot of sharing when there is a local crime or criminal activity in the area.
I don't use the app I use a web based version but don't have security concerns At the moment a local woman is missing since last weekend and nextdoor has been useful for organising leaflet and poster drops and searches
I had exactly the same experience. Streetlife was excellent and was used for all sorts of purposes, including setting up a friendship group which is still flourishing. Nextdoor was extremely limited in the area covered and I quickly decided it was no use.
There is a Facebook page for the town I live in where one can go to find recommendations for local tradesmen or businesses as well as old friends and schoolmates. Plus memories of how the place has changed over the years.
Have any of you tried putting your town or city on Facebook to see if you have a local page?
I have the app but I’ve refused to have notifications so I don’t get annoying beeps all the time . I usually get an email once a day letting me know what’s going on but I just delete them as I get them . It is handy if you need a tradesman or if you are selling something.
I've been using Nextdoor for ages and when it used to be Streetlife. It's a hyper local social media site. You can only register using your real name and address so everyone is local. In your settings you can choose to have your surname show the first initial only. It does not show your address, it used to show your street name but they stopped that. It shows the area you live in.
It's great for getting recommendations if you need a plumber etc from local people. Also there are local groups on there which you can join. I set up a group myself and a nice little group of us now meet up for coffee and lunch etc.
I’m a very private person and a teacher in the area as well, so I don’t like my real name on a public forum. I did join Nextdoor but I rarely post anything. I have found Nextdoor to have very helpful recommendations for local tradesmen, house cleaners and businesses and especially when trying to find or reunite lost pets. I have found three lost dogs since I joined Nextdoor and through the app I’ve been able to find their owners quickly. Most of the people are very kind and considerate.
In answer to those trying to delete their account, I genuinely believe it to be impossible.
I basically just ignore it, in our area, it just seems to be people wanting something for nothing.
I deactivated mine by scrolling to settings, account details, then scroll to the bottom.
I deactivated mine earlier this morning.
The main reason being that it would not recognise any password.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve changed it and then it wouldn’t accept it.
If I could have edited my name I would have kept Nextdoor for longer.
I’m surprised that it let me deregister without a password, but it did.
Whether or not they still send me silly emails - I shall have to see…
I might have another go!
I would have preferred to edit too.
I don't get emails now.
I did belong to Streetlife but when it was taken over by Next door which is American it went downhill (may have come back up again) and you did have to give your full details then which is why so many people left
PI tried again today later and it covered such a large area with nothing much happening (this was some years back ) that again I left
I can get absolutely everything and more that it offers through the various local sites on FB we have groups for gardening and every other hobby under the sun, for buying selling, for exchanges, for being helping hands, photography, local history as well as alerts for everything from next doors lost cat to the building on fire, road closures pot holes the lot
I ve been on Fb and local pages and buy and sell a lot for 14 years without a smidgeon of trouble
