The Duke of Sussex said he and his wife had been "brought together for a reason" and shared a "commitment to a life of service" as they accepted a top accolade at the 53rd annual NAACP Image awards.

The Duke and Duchess appeared in person at the ceremony to accept the President's Award, which recognises special achievement and distinguished public service

Chestnut

Surely awards are given to people who devote their lives to helping others, working day and night in homeless shelters etc. There are some amazingly selfless people who do just that.

What the hell do H&M do apart from the odd visit or instruct their staff to do something for them. They simply wave their magic wands in their ivory tower and make something happen. I can't see how that deserves an award.

Precisely.

It would look dreadful on me FannyCornforth but I don’t have Meghan’s physical advantages. I love those colours though.

National Association for the Advancement Of Coloured People

I didn’t think it was PC to use the word ‘coloured’ now?

JaneJudge Sun 27-Feb-22 11:23:02

It's American

eazybee Sun 27-Feb-22 11:25:00

No Chestnut, awards are not, or rarely, given, to people who devote their lives to helping others, working day and night in homeless shelters etc , because they are not self-promoters and very few, other than those who benefit from their help realise what they do.

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 11:25:28

As I mentioned upthread, it was started in 1909 when I expect the phrase was ‘allowed’
Now it’s People of Colo(u)r, isn’t it

America now has a royal family

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 11:26:49

Blossoming the only thing that I could achieve with that dress is to somehow fashion it into a sort of infinity scarf, and pop it over my head!

Yep. That is true
Lilibet will probably be a megastar.
An all American Princess ? ??

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 11:29:24

And if my prediction comes true re Queen Charlotte, we could have a real life Dynasty! Wow! ?

Blossoming Sun 27-Feb-22 11:34:20

Is predicting the fate of Royalty still treason?

I’m currently reading a biography of Henry VIII and he slimmed down the royal family quite a bit, mostly by beneading them,

Jaberwok Sun 27-Feb-22 11:38:39

I've heard the Nobel Prize is being suggested for these two. For what? I can't even begin to guess, perhaps something extra ordinary that has passed me by. Maybe trashing your family, cutting your father completely out of your life, lying through your teeth, making extortionate sums of money via your dead mother, being sanctimonious? Perhaps these are necessary qualities for which they would be well qualified. Who knows?

Rosalyn69 Sun 27-Feb-22 11:39:39

Like attracts like.

A self-proclaimed Royal journalist Richard Eden started the Nobel Prize rumour on Twitter. Must be true then.

The universe brought them together to save the world and make millions at the same time.

Megan for President and Harry for ?

Daisend1 Sun 27-Feb-22 12:02:07

The Duke and Duchess according to Prince Harry ''have been brought together for a purpose Other than put more money into the bank of Harry and Meghan.am at a loss as to what it could possibly be.????????????????????????

trisher Sun 27-Feb-22 12:05:42

Well the NAACP -the largest and most active civil rights organisation in America- it has over 2 million members obviously think they have done something. But of course GN members know better.
Perhaps it's something to do with calling out racism in the British press and the RF. Perhaps it's about Archewell becoming a significant funder of civil rights. Perhaps it's about a black women daring to marry into the RF and having the nerve to express her views in spite of all the hatred aimed at them both.

Anniebach Sun 27-Feb-22 12:10:28

trisher calling out racism in the royal family ? That’s low
even for you . Didn’t expect you to believe something said in
a tv interview. I can not have respect for your posts now.

GagaJo Sun 27-Feb-22 12:12:37

Exactly trisher.

An organisation begun in 1909, that played a pivotal part in the US anti-lynching and civil rights movements, that worked very closely with Martin Luther King probably know what they're talking about when it comes to equal rights, focusing on racial equality and racial discrimination.

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 12:22:48

Not knocking the NAACP at all, not that I’d heard of it before, which will rather further my point; which is:
These type of awards are often given to high profile and oft photographed, glamorous people in order to get publicity for the charity or organisation.
It’s nothing new

The high jump once he’s outlived his usefulness.
