The Duke of Sussex said he and his wife had been "brought together for a reason" and shared a "commitment to a life of service" as they accepted a top accolade at the 53rd annual NAACP Image awards.

The Duke and Duchess appeared in person at the ceremony to accept the President's Award, which recognises special achievement and distinguished public service

Juggernaut Sun 27-Feb-22 12:26:53

Oh bless, they seem to think this award makes them important in some way!
I wonder how long it will take them to realise that they're utterly irrelevant!?

Anniebach Sun 27-Feb-22 12:31:24

A woman of colour, as she refers to herself, marries a white man in 2018 and they get an award for it.

My Dad was very involved with the RAFA after he served in WW2. He and half a dozen others funraised and bought a unit to open as a club. They worked very hard with all the renovations themselves.

One man would turn up very occasionally with a clipboard and local newspaper photographer to get himself into the paper. He eventually got himself an OBE - other b*ggers efforts as my dad called it.

Not knocking the NAACP at all, not that I’d heard of it before, which will rather further my point; which is:
These type of awards are often given to high profile and oft photographed, glamorous people in order to get publicity for the charity or organisation.
It’s nothing new

Yes, people like Muhammad Ali, Jesse Jackson and Colin Powell

Only interested in themselves, it's a disgrace.

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 12:38:47

Sigh ?
Do you have to argue about everything volver?
Have a day off, it must be exhausting

volver Sun 27-Feb-22 12:41:47

No, everything. I have to argue about everything.

Except gardening.

I don't know anything about gardening so I'm happy to keep my mouth shut. And economics.

Anniebach Sun 27-Feb-22 12:43:53

Why didn’t she receive the honour when she married her first husband

Purplepixie Sun 27-Feb-22 12:48:53

I thought they wanted a nice private life and to stay out of the limelight? Harry on his own but Megan ………………………..NO!

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 12:51:10

Anyway volver, I didn’t mean all awards are given for publicity, just some (which of course you knew already - so I don’t know why I’m wasting my metaphorical breath!)

It’s not so much the arguing, but the quibbling.
But we’re all guilty of that.

As I said in another thread, it should be GN’s answer to Wordle and Nerdle: Quibble

trisher Sun 27-Feb-22 12:55:55

Well I checked and the award is for their work with a women's centre in Texas, for fighting for equity in Covid Vaccines and for workng in partnership to create community relief centres.
But god forbid anyone on GN should acknowledge their work

Wow , why read the thread if it's so
Irritating to you.
I wondered why they had won this award as well and thought maybe their good deeds were not being focused on as much as the bitching.

Seems like the same logic should apply to a news article about the two if reading about them is so upsetting.

mrsgreenfingers56 Sun 27-Feb-22 12:59:12

What are these two on? The wacky backy me thinks!

Is it me ( I know that it isn’t ) but GN is really, really hard work at the moment.
It seems that everyone is accusing everyone else of being ‘bitchy ‘
It’s bonkers !

It's not just you.

I agree it's not just you. Why use the term "bitchy", when it in itself is discriminatory towards women when this is a site used mostly by women. We all have our thoughts and ideas we should be able to air them without being called "Bitchy", which I would definitely object to if used to my face.sad

They were too busy handing out packets of dope at their wedding it stopped her qualifying.

volver Sun 27-Feb-22 13:19:43

Not bitchy, no, not bitchy at all.

Remind me, which is the written one, slander or libel?

Not to black Americans, clearly.

To old British people, maybe. Meh

paddyann54 Sun 27-Feb-22 13:42:31

Doesn't the queen hand out honours to her offspring for ...well just being her offspring! Rows of medals and yards of gold braid for doing exactly what you accuse M and H of doing turning up shaking hands having their name on notepaper /
Thats different? Thats a PROPER RF thing !

Greta8 Sun 27-Feb-22 14:30:13

I'm not surprised at all that they got an award from NAACP. Meghan and Harry actually do stuff, rather than just pretending to do so - e.g. the Grenfell Tower cookbook, Harry's Invictus Games and many other initiatives. It must have been a huge culture shock for the Royals when Meghan married in, with her dynamism and work ethic. I'll probably be slated on this thread for my opinion, but personally the Royal family made a grave error in not helping her settle. I think noses were put out of joint -and particularly Kate and William felt threatened by them. The Royals in comparison now look like a moribund, static, dying, dysfunctional institution limping its way on. They certainly have nothing tangible to offer - oh sorry, Kate's inspirational early years work - which is what exactly?

Allsorts Sun 27-Feb-22 14:49:19

What an excellent idea Volver, haven’t they got a media page (book) somewhere dedicated to their good works and lifestyle choices that benefit the Planet. They would make excellent advisors/counsellors on so many subjects. ie. Dealing diplomatically with family problems, perhaps mediating between parties. Managing on a budget, coping with two very young children.

They will become irrelevant when people stop reading about them and subsequently commenting.

Because if no one's interested, the 'meeja' won't profit from churning out endless column inches about them. So they won't bother.

... and that's how they will become irrelevant. No one will know what they do or don't do unless they seek out the information. And as people have stated they're not interested in this couple and wish they'd go away (or words to that effect) - they won't bother to seek out the information - then, voila! they're irrelevant!

Sparklefizz Sun 27-Feb-22 16:16:25

fighting for equity in Covid Vaccines

How did they actually fight? I remember them mentioning it but what else did they do? Anything?

After all, I mentioned it to some friends.... does that mean that I fought for it too?

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 16:24:15

Sparklefizz I know. It’s utterly ludicrous

Gongoozler Sun 27-Feb-22 16:36:50

I do wonder what sort of role models they are to their children for the way they both have trashed their own families so publicly. I wonder how Archie and Lilibet will treat their own parents in the future?

Ask Simon and Garfunkel.
