I can't stop watching the news on TV or listening to it on the radio and it is scaring me so much. Those poor women and children who are now refugees. Now Putin is talking about nuclear forces to be on alert!!! I am so scared for the world. I keep crying thinking of how would my grand daughters and my baby grt GD cope if it was them forced to leave home. How is it affecting you??

I see that HMS defender has just left Portsmouth.

X3 War Ships including Defender apparently left last week. (She might have come back in post a "shake up")
The NATO flagship is also one of ours. This is not confidential info.

Loved the 'map for Putin' Whitewavemark. Anybody got his e-mail? Maybe we should ask the Russian Embassy to forward.

EU Jets - reading these aren't planes flown by NATO pilots but just the jets themselves as part of the lethal aid to Ukraine. Likely will be MIGs from Poland, as Ukrainian pilots would need training to fly Eurofighters.

Just read on the BBC news site that pro-Russian Belarus are going to start sending troops into Ukraine.

Apparently Liz Truss has stirred things up with her remarks eliciting the Russians to use the nuclear threat. Could someone please reign her in, this is not a game?

If you are saying this, where is the link please. Do you really think a madman would need encouraging, because I don’t. Putin should be called a war criminal, because that’s what he is.

Putin would have factored in the threat of the use of nuclear weapons into his plans, prepared long before Lzz Truss got anywhere near the Foreign Office.

This invasion is not a kneejerk reaction to Putin not wanting Uktaine to join NATO or the EC, It is a long term plan by Putin to bring back into Russia, an area of land that was central to the formation of Russian Christianity and which he has always seen as an integral part of the Russian state, not a separate country.

In photographs Putin looks puffy and unwell and rumours abound abotu what this is. I think, whether temporary or disabling, Putin is realising that like everyone else he is mortal and that his time in power may soon end for health reasons.

He is also, it is said, obsessed with what his place in history will be. Currently it is distinctively negative, even from the Russian viewpoint. In his eyes, if he can once again bring back Ukraine and make it, not a separate country, but part of Greater Russia, this will make everything else he has done as nothing and he will be a great Russian hero.

Apparently, it takes quite a few people to "press the red button" and I don't think they would do it. It was hidden from Trump for all the time he was president, others took over.

Well I have always admired Putin but not now. He has turned out to be a violent thug and crazily unpredictable. Once a KGB man, always a KGB man it seems. Is he connected by DNA with the mad Ras Putin? Makes you wonder.

I really cannot understand . Putin has always been a thug. A KGB thug underneath that ill fitting designer suit.

putin is orthodox christian, connected to the russion orthodox church. He receives communion. Maybe, just maybe, his church elders might get through to him. Who knows.

M0nica Mon 28-Feb-22 17:22:53

Unfortunately the Russian Orthodox Church are among his strongest supporters in this as in so much else.

It is a church that has survived in its current strength because of its willingness to support the Soviet state.

Cherrytree59 Mon 28-Feb-22 17:40:11

Is Putin possibly a dying man, who feels that Kyiv his Russian Orthodox religious homeland and wants it back into the fold?

St Vladimir the Great statue is in Kyiv . was the first Russian Christian Ruler proclaimed to be The Prince of all Russia.

M0nica Mon 28-Feb-22 17:52:54

Yes, that has been suggested by a number of sources.

BlueBalou Mon 28-Feb-22 17:54:49

nanna8 I have always admired Putin

? Seriously?
He’s always been a bully, even from his schooldays, he was feared greatly as a KGB thug and his ruthlessness and psycho behaviour is well documented. He has neither morals or empathy with anyone.
So he’s a churchgoer. That, imo means very little, look at the scandals within probably every religion.

Daisymae Mon 28-Feb-22 17:59:49

I heard the Truss story in the BBC news this morning.

maddyone Mon 28-Feb-22 18:46:22

If Putin is a churchgoer he may believe in heaven and hell. If so, he should recognise that he is going straight to hell for his cruelty and lack of love for his fellow men. I don’t believe in heaven or hell, but in this case, I wish I did.

Russia stands accused of using BM-21 Grad cluster-bombs against civilians in Kharkiv. If so, this is a war crime. I saw cluster-bombs used by Israel in Lebanon in 1982, and the injuries they caused were obscene.

I am also frightened for democracy everywhere. Putin is a bully and feels no remorse for actions, other than self gratification. Standing by to watch, we feel guilty, but dig in to help and we may put ourselves at risk. There is no easy answer.

I am guilty lately of watching the news too much; it is good to be aware of what is going on, but I feel a sense of dread. I do hope this can be resolved without further escalation.
