What did you have on your pancakes and what will you be giving up for Lent?

Just that really.

There doesn't seem to be any mention of Pancake Day anywhere.

Here in Germany we can't get away from it, although this year the parties and parades were subdued, and many cancelled because of Covid.

The parades in Cologne etc were converted into Peace demonstrations, but there were thousands out on the streets anyway.

What is the point of giving anything up? I’ve never understood unless you all donate to charity the money saved. We didn’t have pancakes yesterday needless to say but perhaps will sometime soon just because we like them.

Had 3 grandsons staying last week. Must have made 30 or more pancakes over the days as they wanted them every breakfast.
Couldn’t cope with the demand so made a big batch before hand. What did they want ? Chocolate sauce of course. It’s amazing how so little of that stuff gets everywhere!
Giving up worrying about catching covid.

Salted caramel ice cream and Honey, not giving up anything

I have joined Slimming World, it is my second week and I am still being good!!

However, I did make a sort of pancake by blitzing 2 eggs with a banana and couple of drops of vanilla and a sprinkling of cinnamon. This made three pancakes and all FREE. (Not quite the same though)

I am giving up bread. I love bread but only 2 small pieces of wholemeal are allowed each day otherwise they are sins. Sorted.

i made pancakes for myself - i live alone but still make them. i had sugar and lemon on them - delicious.
i won't give up anything for lent. i don't buy chocolate very often so i can't give it up.
but i'll buy myself an easter egg a bit later - not to eat during lent though!

I didn’t bother making pancakes last night.
I’m giving up wine gums, buying books, and biscuits.

Had lemon and sugar on one and Nutella with banana on the other one. Don’t give up anything for lent but I do put aside an item every day to take to the local charity shop instead

Made a compote of blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and cranberries with a touch of orange liqueur.
Served this up with home made pancakes and a large dollop of salted caramel ice cream.
Delicious.

I haven’t thought about what I’ll give up for Lent. Last year I made a daily note of what I was grateful for. Another year I started a charity box and put something in each day and after 40 days took it to a local charity shop.

I love this idea of a charity box. At the moment, emergency toiletry supplies are being collected for Ukraine. Perhaps this is an idea that many of us, including me, could adapt for this very much needed purpose.
For myself, neither my husband nor I like pancakes so we didn’t have them. I am on a Facebook fast.

I never bother with Lent.

Yammy Wed 02-Mar-22 14:19:38

They were made savoury filled with ragu and baked in a cheese sauce ala, Delia Smith.
Should give Calories up for Lent but as I have already given up sugar I am finding butter very difficult. It's going to be another fat rascal, Simnelcake and hotcross buns Easter.blush

We cooked smoked salmon and chive pancakes with mustard sauce and salad - very easy and a delicious treat (inspiration from internet recipe).

It was our Rainbow meeting last night, I made some pancakes at home and then we warmed them up in the microwave. The Rainbows were given a choice of toppings sugar, lemon, jam, golden syrup, maple syrup, bananas ....the winner Chocolate spread of course!! One little 5 year old announced 'These taste much better than the pancakes at school .... and we didn't get chocolate' spread

We didn't have pancakes - not sure we like them really. Lent - decided to just try to be calmer and more patient. Trouble is I've already discovered that it is easier to be calm and patient when a decent ration of sugary stuff consumed - which doesn't fit with idea of Lent...

We has crushed cranberries, cream and a little slice of lemon. Yummy ?

We went over to our son and daughter-in-law after they got home, bringing the pancake batter I had mixed earlier. My son and I took it in turns to cook and toss the pancakes for our two grandchildren aged 2 and 5 yrs and for two each for ourselves. I had one with lemon and sugar and one with chocolate spread and chopped hazelnuts.
My husband and I are giving up biscuits we each have one with our daily morning coffee and he often has a couple in the evening. My grandson who is in reception class told me he is giving up chocolate for lent. So I said he won’t be needing his chocolate button that he and his little sister always gets on a Sunday after lunch when they have got ready to go home. No Nana just chocolate not chocolate buttons. He doesn’t normally have chocolate except at Christmas or Easter

Tate and Lyle golden syrup on pancakes, always have (although we called it treacle when young) struggled with buying plastic bottle not the green tin but hey ho!
I always give up celery, cucumber, mustard and octopus for lent ?

I didnt have any pancakes although had the ingredients, but had rather a horrible experience, felt dizzy wasnt well , fell and couldnt get up and stuck on the floor for about 9 hours. Not good. As for the pancakes I was the pancake queen, when I lived in portugal and needed to return much hospitality, went to the algarve and got lots of lovely lemons and oranges and then was inspired to have a pancake party. So, a curry, apiced beef and a fish dish for the savoury. for sweet , stewed apple with cinnamon, the lovely oranges and lemons of course, and the star of the show - which I thought they might think babyish - but with an adult addition. Mashed bananas with some rum added. so stood tossing pancakes and people made a wish and went off to add whatever they fancied. did 3lb of flour and the party went with a swing. So for me the purist lemon and a little sugar, and then the bananas with rum, which have to be added at the very last minute before you eat them so they dont go soggy. Anything would have been better than lying on a cold hard floor. Ah well next year!

Lemon juice and caster sugar. Delia's foolproof batter recipe - delicious. DH and I agreed that we should have them more often than once a year. Not religious and don't give up anything for Lent. But this year I've vowed to give up whinging about minor issues. The last two years of Covid measures have turned me into a prize whinger. The situation in Ukraine puts things into perspective.

mamaa Wed 02-Mar-22 15:54:42

Lemon and sugar- giving up wine.

AlpineGranny Wed 02-Mar-22 16:09:16

Of course we had pancakes with lemon no sugar cos I couldn’t find any.
Giving up chocolate and cheese! Both a hardship for me but I do it every year usually without a hitch.

Yammy Wed 02-Mar-22 16:10:25

I hope you are feeling better madeleine 5 A nine hour lie on the floor does not sound good.[Flowers]
