Wondering what people think about this?

I'm not in this position but can see both sides of the argument.

I agree there. I have reservations about only selling to locals, for reasons I outlined upthread; but there should definitely be genuinely affordable housing in all areas. This, of course, goes back to the council house sell-off, which betrayed every generation that came after it.

I think we should go back to having state-owned housing that is rented reasonably to anyone who needs or wants it, but with absolutely no expectation that it will be sold - whether at a discount or at market value. Unfortunately that won't happen overnight, but there should be a concentrated programme of housebuilding until there is no housing shortage. It is shameful that in a rich country there are people sleeping on the streets and families in overcrowded accommodation or b&bs. That is shameful in itself, but is the more so when other people have more than one house and the leave one empty for a lot of the time.
