Ive seen lots of people stull wearing masks in M &S.
Same with Waitrose
Sainsburys, I would say a third are still wearing masks.
In Lidl theres a smattering of mask wearing people.

On the other hand I had to call into Asda yesterday as I'd run out of milk
It was extremely busy and NO ONE was wearing a mask!
Well I was, and one or two of the employees. But that was it.
It seemed to be full of kids coughing and sniffing as well.
I found myself sanitising my hands on the way out

Prepared to be told I'm being snobbyhmmgrin
But, why are some supermarkets more This is Disease Central than others?

It always amuses me when the announcement comes over the tanoy in Sainsbury’s...

“ Even though it’s no longer a legal requirement, we would ask all our customers to show courtesy to others, and continue to wear a mask”

I would say it’s about 70% wear a mask, when I shop Thursday or Friday morning, but that’s the customers. Very few staff do!

I saw some in matalan but they were elasticated waist and not everyone likes an elasticated waist smile have a look at sainsburys tu clothes, they do such good quality clothing

That's funny! Masks in shops were dropped on Monday here in France. About 95% still wearing them in Carrefour, 75% in Lidl.
We are making our first trip in over two years to the UK next month. We will go from our car to the cabin on the ferry, drive to DD's house, then wear masks for shopping in M and S and Waitrose. Shopping list sadly much diminished because pork pies, bacon and cheese no longer allowed. ?
By the way does anyone know where I can buy simple knee length linen / cotton skirts?

JaneJudge Fri 18-Mar-22 10:01:40

I quite like asda but I must admit I have avoided it because even when mask wearing was mandatory there was post after post on local facebook about people not wearing masks, not social distancing, whole families going shopping together.

I only really go to sainsburys and almost everyone wears a mask. Oh I sometimes pop in the co-op too, it's a mix in the co-op

You would certainly have a touch of the vapours and clutch your pearls if you went into my nearest Waitrose.
It’s cheek by jowl with the largest council estates in the town.
But to counteract that, Lidl have a store on the doorstep of a very expensive private estate.

MiniMoon Fri 18-Mar-22 09:38:14

Most people were still wearing masks when I was in the Co-op in our little town. The staff were not! They did wear face shields which is better than nothing I suppose.

shock
M & S!

I visited a M&S food store yesterday. I saw no masks apart from my own, and was surprised to see that the transparent till screens had been removed. I am immunosuppressed therefore was a bit wary.

BlueBelle Fri 18-Mar-22 09:18:49

I doubt there’s any difference people are either mask wearers or not or are you trying to imply that the more expensive food outlets have the most mask wearers ?
Eg Waitrose and M and S are the best at mask wearing ?

Thanks Snowberry I shop in Asda (nearest and most convenient for me on my cycle) and yes you do sound really snobby ?

Yammy Fri 18-Mar-22 09:11:06

We only have a Sainsburys and if you go early in the week it is mainly older people with masks BUT quite a few of their staff did not have them.
I did look into M&S but there were more people and again the older were wearing masks.
I have had reports that in Booths and Waitrose in other towns most people are masked.
Dare I say is it the cheaper supermarkets where younger customers shop that mainly masks are less.

MissAdventure Fri 18-Mar-22 09:04:43

Yep, perhaps they are depressed at having to shop in Asda, so don't take care of themselves so much?

I wonder if there are accredited studies on mask wearing trends?

At the height of the pandemic I often saw families with just the man not wearing a mask.

Yeah. What is it about Asda?
Why weren't people wearing masks?
Why this particular shop?confused

Except for a few things I usually go to Asda, since it’s the closest and most convenient.

But at the height of the first lockdown, i.e. long before vaccines, I witnessed a group of 4 late teens/early 20s blokes, all wearing masks on their chins as they went round the shop talking and laughing very loudly.

I did ask a member of staff why none of them said anything.
‘We’re not allowed.’

From experience at the time, M&S and Waitrose were the most compliant, and I think still are.

Perhaps some shops attract more adventurous, risk taking customers?
Just popping in the buy some toilet roll to take on a mountain hike sorts?

That's the funniest thing I've read!

At the risk of sounding really snobby, the average customer in Asda yesterday didn't look capable as if they were hiking up any mountains, any time soon.

So no, I wouldn't have said they were more risk taking. More couldn't give a damn maybe!

rosie1959 Fri 18-Mar-22 08:56:28

I was in Brighton last weekend out and about in shops pubs restaurants ect saw very few masks the whole time surprisingly those I did see tended to be young people

But then Lidl and Sainsburys has a mix of young and older customers, same as Asda.
So scrap that theory. confused

As my mother would say

Some places have a naicer class of customersgrin

Redhead56 Fri 18-Mar-22 08:49:44

Asda have always provided masks plus hand sanitiser here 50/50 people wear masks.

Greyduster Fri 18-Mar-22 08:49:08

About three quarters not wearing masks in Morrisons yesterday and yes, it seems to be the older generation wearing masks (though not exclusively).

aggie Fri 18-Mar-22 08:45:58

Lidl here seem to be most people are wearing masks

MissAdventure Fri 18-Mar-22 08:45:56

I was thinking that, but I didn't want to say it. smile

snowberryZ Fri 18-Mar-22 08:43:21

Yes I sometimes wonder if its because there are more elderly customers at some supermarkets.

eazybee Fri 18-Mar-22 08:35:13

Waitrose has the most mask wearers near me. But it also appears to have the oldest shoppers, at the times I visit , anyway.

Why is it considered snobby to wear a mask? I haven’t heard that before.

I mentioned this to a friend and she said. " what dyou expect, it's Asda"
So there is a snobby element to it.

M0nica Fri 18-Mar-22 08:26:19

In Waitrose, at least first thing on a Thursday morning, which is when I shop, more mask wearers than non-maskwearers
