Queen’s attitude to being in a wheelchair, supposedly.

I have been reading about the Queen’s apparent negative attitude to being seen in public in a wheelchair. Her reaction apparently been ascribed to the shock caused to the public by Princess Margaret appearing in a wheelchair. I remember her appearing but I wasn’t shocked at the wheelchair bit, it was the sling, the sunglasses and the general air of malaise.
I would have thought that the sight of a sparkling Queen dressed smartly and with her beaming smile in a wheelchair would have done a great deal for the disabled.
I realise that she has an image to maintain but she is very elderly now and surely it is not a bad thing to have to adapt to her health issues.
If she is going to cling on to the bitter end then she either adapts or hands over to Prince Charles who is already elderly.

One thing I know about the UK is that it has an uncodified constitution. I would look it up but it's not actually written down...

Anyway. How we run the country is based on precedent and so comparatively easily changed.

So if the people of this country were to decide we didn't want a head of state that decided she could farm out her responsibilities to her family members, we could have that. And there's nothing the monarchy/royal family could do about it.

Is that something you understood about our country?

?

Actually I don't know if it is that easy to change. No MP can take their seat in parliament unless they first take an oath of allegiance to the monarch. If they are not in parliament, they can't vote. If all the MPs who can vote have sworn allegiance to the monarch, how can they break their oath to vote against it, or debate in a way that shows they are not faithful to the monarch? We are in a bit of a bind.

Thanks Honeysuckleberries. I hadn't thought of that!

It's Spanish for "Return". It's also the name of a film. In my dreams, I look like Penelope Cruz ?

Volver, I find your name interesting. Is it a shortening of revolver, cos you always shoot from the hip. I always find your comments fascinating, if I’m allowed to say so.

Any other family and it’s called nepotism.

"Grow up" says the poster who doesn't think we can make changes our uncodified constitution.

Entertain the possibility that we don't have to live with things just because we always have in the past.

I understand Sarcasm !

But not vision and possibilities, clearly.

Used a wheelchair when I broke my ankle. I called it my “friendie” giving me a lift to the toilet during the night. The rented wheelchair didn’t fit through the bathroom door so had to use crutches. Awful, but get over it. Hated well meaning people pushing me for hospital visits. They pushed too fast making me feel sick and dizzy. Much preferred to wheel myself.

I can’t see any reason why the Queen couldn’t retire. She would still be Queen, but Charles would do all the work. That’s what would happen if she became too ill or incapacitated to do the job in any shape or form. I’m certainly not wishing that on her but I am saying I think she could easily retire. After the jubilee. Perhaps she will.

Bridgeit Wed 23-Mar-22 22:05:40

Ummm because it is part of our countries constitution
Perhaps look it up, you may gain a better understanding about our country.

Why not?

Pick & Choose

Bridgeit Wed 23-Mar-22 21:55:35

They Can Not .

Bridgeit Wed 23-Mar-22 21:54:57

It has & does change but unlike the rest of us who can choose , when & how .
Theirs has to been done through constitutional changes. They pick & choose laws , & tradition on a whim .

volver Wed 23-Mar-22 21:50:17

And why would that be a bad thing?

The World moves on. Just because we've always done something one way, doesn't mean we have to do it that way forever.

?….?

Bridgeit Wed 23-Mar-22 21:43:31

And what?

They get around it by other family members covering more engagements.
The constitution would have to be changed through Parliament, etc

And...?

Mollygo Wed 23-Mar-22 21:19:56

It’s not my business whether she takes to a wheelchair or not. I hope my family and friends don’t decide it’s their business to tell me when they think I should be in a wheelchair.
I spent my early childhood in plaster casts and leg callipers. I don’t know that seeing other people I didn’t know wearing them would have made me feel better.

As long as the Queen is of sound mind, she will never abdicate.

No, but I think she should retire.
