Chestnut I don't think anyone who has commented on this post has said anything to indicate they would rather have children killed than agree to proper dog controls. That is totally unfounded and unfair.

There has been balanced discussion and everyone - whether pro or anti dog - has been horrified about the attacks on the poor children and thoroughly behind better controls on dogs, owners, breeders, sellers, walkers and trainers.

Absolutely right Coastpath all the responsible dog owners will agree that there needs to be stronger regulation of breeding and ownership.

Chestnut - thank you for posting that. Do you know if there has been a subsequent study?

It does not really seem to cover general nuisance.

I think a new study is overdue as many of the problems seem to have increased - particularly out-of-control breeding. And the recent spate of deaths should be an impetus for this.

Luckygirl3 I guess you'd have to Google to find out the latest study. I'm no expert, just came across the 1998 study by chance.

I don’t think you need a study. I’m pretty sure that it will throw up the same breed of dog and a similar profile of family. Which is why I still maintain it’s a social problem.

@Maybee has made very clear points about how we can better use the existing systems and controls - and yet others persist in saying we need new laws. We all know that enforcement, not legislation, is the issue with many of our society’s current challenges. Realistically no-one is going to vote for tax increases to fund dog wardens etc etc. when there are so many other more pressing problems affecting our communities.

argymargy I don't think dog legislation needs funding through tax increases. There are 12.5 million dogs in the UK so it can be funded through the licence fee.

The police can’t keep up with drivers who have no licence or insurance. You can bet that group would continue to breed and sell puppies illegally and there wouldn’t be a licence in sight.
There was a notorious puppy farm locally. Well publicised campaigns to get it closed down, didn’t stop people buying unhealthy, poor specimens from the place. It was closed recently, as a direct result of campaigns by responsible dog owners

I think having to have your dog chipped is a sort of replacement for a dog licence. But even when you’ve had them chipped I don’t think you have to register them (I could be wrong).

They should be registered May. The irresponsible sell them on and the details aren’t changed

Most rescue dogs seem to have details that are out of date. It’s also important the get your dogs chip checked every year as they can migrate round their body! I picked up two poo bags on the beach yesterday that someone had put on one side and forgotten to pick up. It infuriates me.

I have had two boxers both from rescues not sure if micro chipping was invented for my first but my second was from a local boxer rescue he was chipped but always had to be registered to the rescue. So if I didn't look after him properly and he was picked up the rescue would be informed.

What I meant was when they’re found the rescue usually say microchipped but the details are out of date. I’m not a fan of flat faced dogs, preferring pointy nosed ones, but I have a soft spot for boxers. Have you read Clare Baldings book My Animals and other Family? Boxers featured largely in her early life.

No I haven't I know she had boxers I will have to add it to my Kindle reading list thank you
