"6 out of ten Scots believe the UK will not exist in its current form in 10 years’ time, according to a new poll which also puts backing for independence in the lead.
The latest survey, carried out by Ipsos, found support for Yes vote is at 50% compared to 43% for No, with 4% of voters remaining undecided.
Nearly half of people north of the Border also think the Union will not exist in five years’ time.
Across the UK overall, however, the proportion predicting the demise of the Union within the next decade has fallen slightly compared with early 2021 - from 56% to 50% in February this year.
Meanwhile, the poll also found the Scottish Government continues to attract more praise than the UK Government for its handling of the pandemic - both north of the Border and across the rest of the UK.
However, it highlighted that people in Scotland are the most pessimistic in the UK about the economic prospects in the coming months.
The Ipsos UK Knowledge panel surveyed more than 4000 people across the UK at the beginning of February,
“Scots remain more likely than those in England and Wales to say the UK will not exist in its current form for much longer,” the report said.
“As many as 61% of Scots say the UK will not exist in its current form in 10 years’ time, compared with 50% across the UK as a whole. 46% of Scots think it will not exist in 5 years’ time, compared with 33% across the UK as a whole.”
When it comes to views across the UK on whether Scotland should vote for independence, just over half of people in England and Wales say they would prefer it to stay part of the Union. However, the report notes views in Northern Ireland are less clear, with 42% saying they want Scotland to stay but 29% backing Scotland to leave the UK.
It also notes: “The Scottish Government continues to attract more praise than the UK Government for its handling of the pandemic, both among those in Scotland, and across the rest of the UK.
“Views of the Scottish Government are, unsurprisingly, most favourable in Scotland, where 59% say the Scottish Government has handled the pandemic well, compared with just 22% who say the same of the UK Government.”
The survey also found that slightly more people in England think the Scottish Government has handled the pandemic well, at 44% compared to 38%.
Across the UK, just 15% think the general economic condition of the UK will improve in the next 12 months, while 67% say it will get worse.
Expectations are even more pessimistic in Scotland, where 73% expect the UK’s economy to get worse in the next year.
“Meanwhile, although three in five Scots expect the demise of the UK within 10 years, those in England and Wales would still prefer Scotland to vote No in any second referendum.”

Obviously meant Sturgeon.
Something's getting monotonous, that's for sure.
This agenda that Sturgeon's pursuing, is that the one that her party stand for and that nearly 50% of the turnout voted for? You know, that agenda that everybody knows about, and on which her party is founded?
Well I never.
Re the OP.
If that’s what gets voted for, then it will happen.
It’s not as stupid as some of the things people are supporting right now.
My passport is valid for a good few years if I needed to go ‘abroad’ and there’s always asking for visas, foreign driving licences etc. (good money making tactics).
I suspect it will be another vote where those who ‘win’, or ‘lose’ will claim unfair tactics, or voting turnout, misleading information by the opposition, etc, etc, whether independence is achieved or not.
Then everything that goes wrong will be because of the success or failure of the process. It’ll keep GN busy for years to come.
Well looks like it will be another vote for Scottish independence. I think it’s a bad idea on many levels, we are stronger together. However, I’m getting sick to death of hearing about it. Sturgeon is an idiot, she’s got an agenda that she’s pursuing at any cost (Urmstongran is completely right). Let all four nations have a vote and then make that result stand. Out should mean out out. People go on like England is this terrible, affluent, crappy place. Time to stop the English bashing, it’s getting monotonous now.
April fools day mmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I relish being a part of a United Kingdom because Scottish, Irish and Welsh people are literally in my DNA and I think the country of England would be poorer without being in union with them. However, I suspect that had I been born in one of those countries I would be champing at the bit to leave right now. ?
Och, now now. Making things up already? Hang on, I need more popcorn...
Nicola Sturgeon is the woman who has refused to accept the results of two referenda simply because it was not what she wanted - who refused to stand down when a Holyrood committee found that she had misled the Scottish parliament - she does not do democracy unless it suits her!
Salmond? She? Have I missed something?
stupid?
Oh this is going well. We love people in England telling us we're stupid.
I don't believe 50% will translate into a positive vote to leave in an indyref. Salmond knows this too, which is why she won't press hard for another referendum at the moment.

I have a foot in both camps. I’m Scottish but have lived in England for 50 years, i.e. most of my life. I’m very much against independence. Heaven knows the UK is small enough in relation to the big nations and we need to work together. Many of my family and friends are also very anti, especially under the current SNP leadership.
I am in the same position as MaryMary. My Scottish father was always against Scottish independence and it seems an even more stupid ideas in the modern world.
Who would not wish to grab the opportunity to detach themselves from BJ and his cronies? Wish I could.
volver ?

Oh, we're off.
This'll be good for a Friday afternoon.
Hang on, just getting my popcorn...
I just wish Blair had never introduced the devolved administrations.
I have said it before, but obviously it needs to be said again.
Both Denmark and Norway have a smaller population that Scotland, but both countries are independent and manage fine - the one as a member of the EU and NATO and the other only as a member of NATO.
There is no reason at all why Scotland should not be able to make a go of independence unless the Scots as such have not realised that it will involve some hard work to start off with.
Well, now that we’ve all got that out of our systems…
No one’s economy is going to do very well after Covid etc. Too poor? We’ll just take our knowledge economy and look after ourselves thanks. No, no, don’t worry about us. We’ll stand on our own two feet. Watch us.
It does seem a bit strange that such a small country should split off into bits. Too wee? The UK is not a country, it’s a union and quite a lot of us have had enough of that Union, thanks very much. I’ll not have my rant about Denmark, New Zealand etc again. I’m sure you’ve had enough of that.
The ferry debacle? Too stupid? Thank goodness we have the Westminster government to fall back on, with their history of financial and legal trustworthiness (sarcasm). Its not like they’ve ever done anything daft, is it? We’re also not stupid enough to believe the 66% majority figure, that’s just made up by nobody who’s in charge of anything, isn’t it?
And now we‘ve got Putin to use as an excuse for telling us to desist. Ross’s latest slogan is about taking Scotland back from the SNP. Well enough people voted for the SNP to put them in power. (If you want to have a discussion about the d’Honte Proportional Representation system, I’m happy to get involved with that.) But right now, with all that’s happening in the world, I’m really quite alarmed that the Scottish Tories think it’s acceptable to talk about getting rid of an elected government because they know that the people don’t really want them.
Putin could well be watching that little bit of fascist playacting, that’s for sure.
Gobble gobble. ???
Turkeys voting for Christmas springs to mind.
Bring it on...
There would need to be at least 66% majority for it to be passed. Currently under 48%.
Putin must be disappointed!
I’m sure Putin is watching with interest.
I don’t think it would benefit Scotland or the rest of the U.K. if they were independant, but if that’s what they vote for, then they should be allowed to be totally self sufficient.
It does seem a bit strange that such a small country should split off into bits. No one’s economy is going to do very well after Covid etc. except maybe the Americans with all their interests in weapons.
