How I wish they lasted longer, the garden looks so bright and cheerful when they are in flowers. Now they are starting to go off....been deadheading them..... then you are left with all that greenery and have to wait for it to die and turn brown. Having said that they are one of my favourite flowers as they herald spring to me, along with purple aubretia. ?

I love daffodils my favourite flower,I was lucky to be in the UK a few weeks ago to be able to appreciate them, as in this country we will not be seing them for at least another month, they have just arrived in shops so we will at least be able to buy some bunches. Its the beginning of spring at last.

To me they mean Spring, the vibrant yellow on a dull day cheers me up. As well as those in the garden I buy a bunch each week during the season I have given up on the taller varieties as they always seem to fall over with the rain & wind here although there are still some in the garden. Now I buy the shorter varieties, planted mainly in pots which I bring onto the patio so I can see them easily. Esmee I will now look for Rip Van Winkle to add to my collection.

Update - I have found it - it's Narcissi Jonquil Martinette

PinkCosmos Mon 28-Mar-22 09:59:21

I grew some lovely daffs last year but took them out of the pot as I needed it for something else.. They were multi headed with really strong orange centres and yellow backs. They were quite tall and smelled fantastic.

I have been trying to find them again on line and I can't remember or find the name. I think it was something beginning with T

Can anyone help?

Tilly Trotter , sorry, I dont rememeber the name of the orange centred variety. For some reason these seem to be long lasting.

I had a beautiful spread of daffs in my garden that had been doubling up for years. Some little toe rags picked them this morning. Every one.

This is a lovely thread, especially so for those of us without a garden. Thank you all.

Caleo are your yellow with orange centre daffs the variety called Jetfire?

Beautiful photo’s on this thread Grans.

Casdon

I’m interested in plant species, so I’ve been doing some digging to find out the answer to your question giulia, and it appears that tete a tete narcissi are not jonquils. Apparently Jonquils are in Class 7 and 13 and have numerous yellow scented blooms with rounded foliage. It is a small group of Narcissus and confined to just the one group.
Tete a tete are in the miscellaneous category, so not jonquils. Here a picture of narcissi jonquila. I stand corrected if anybody knows better!

Thank you so much for this information. Then mine are tete a tete daffs, not jonquils.

These grow in the middle of the lawn. Going to paint them so can record the memory.

The scent is so lovely - it smells of fresh air, and hope.

How I wish my glorious magnolia tree would stay in bloom for longer.

The first colour of spring. I love them

I have a mix of King Alfred, they last quite well, & then some smaller blooms which have a lovely scent plus odds & sods from planted pots I have been given. My tulips are out too but have been in about 8byears and are less vibrant than when first planted. Maybe time to refresh!

Armynanny Fri 25-Mar-22 16:08:24

I love daffodils too and have some in a tub. I had resisted planting them in our back garden because of them not lasting for very long, dead heading etc., but this year I’m going to plant loads as they bring me so much pleasure. Interestingly, our son has planted loads of them in his garden and loves them as much as I do.

The sap inside daffodils is quite nasty stuff. My daughter was a picker in Cornwall one year and they all were issued with gloves.

I've grown pure white Thalia for several years .
I love their delicate white petals .

I put them in the ground and in pots a few years ago and up they come every Spring .

Madashell Fri 25-Mar-22 14:04:30

Prefer Cheerfulness, a wonderful heady perfume, must plant some for next year.

Duvetdiva Fri 25-Mar-22 13:29:03

Similar to you Merylstreep but I sink the little pots into the soil to hide the pot. Then when they are dying down I lift them again and store them behind the shed for next year
Espree yours are gorgeous!

I had a brick built planter attached to my front porch and immediately outside my kitchen window before I moved. We planted mimi daffodils in it and perennial geraniums. Every year dh would buy me the little pots of Tete a tete daffs from the supermarket and I would add them to the planter, it was in total shade and the daffs used to blossom well into June every year, then the geraniums began to flower and hide all the untidy daffodil foliage. It was much admired by all my neighbours and it broke my heart to leave it behind when we moved. I could not resist a visit when I was in the neighbourhood recently and was heart broken all over again to see the planter completely bare except for three plastic “box” plants! The whole front garden had received the same sterile treatment, not a living plant to be seen! Moral: never look back!

I have some Tet a tete daffodils in my garden and I have noticed over the years that the flowers get nibbled. I assumed it was slugs until the other week when I saw a pesky squirrel nibbling away at one grin

annemarg Fri 25-Mar-22 12:26:22

I have daffodils and some little blue flowers (I can't remember what they are called!) which are situated at the front of the garden by the pavement. A lovely thing happened today - a little girl, her mum, nanna and a little dog had stopped in front of the garden and were looking at the daffodils and obviously enjoying them. It really touched my heart - I am old girl admittedly (in my eighties) but this meant so much to me!!!
