The Oscars tonight. Anyone tuning in? ?

Not me

The Oscars became an irrelevant embarrassment when they started pandering to the demands of every minority group’s bleating.

The horse has bolted, nobody cares anymore. The winners are selected by tokenism and box-ticking; not merit.

People used to watch for the glamour and escapism. They switched off because they are sick of being lectured and subjected to politics. They should just scrap them.

In my opinion.
What do you think?

Nooooooooooooo ?‍♀️

It's the presenters I can't stand. They're given a platform and Boy, do they make the most of it with their unfunny jokes, political opinions and cheap jibes and put downs at the expense of celebrities they don't like - clearly hoping to push them even more out of favour than they already are.

I don't think they give a toss who wins the awards they just relish the power and seem totally unaware that for the most part the audience are cringing with embarrassment.

I expect you've guessed I won't be watching. grin

Who used the phrase ‘oxygen thief’??

maddyone Sun 27-Mar-22 21:01:00

No thank you. I’m in Portugal at the moment anyway, but I wouldn’t watch them if I was at home. I dislike the ostentatious display of wealth, I dislike the nauseating speeches, but most of all I dislike the way the industry pats itself on the back and says how wonderful they all are.

maddyone Sun 27-Mar-22 21:02:03

An example of someone wonderful would be the courageous president of Ukraine, not an actress/actor.

Callistemon21 Sun 27-Mar-22 21:06:04

I think many people are bored now with these self-congratulatory events, pretentious luvvies all patting each other on the back for doing a well-paid job and gushing their false sentiments to all and sundry.

Serendipity22 Sun 27-Mar-22 21:09:34

I seriously have no interest whatsoever, not a film fan and almost all the actors and actresses that i see in the following days news, i have never heard of.

So, swift answer to will i be tuning in? ........No. x

An example of someone wonderful would be the courageous president of Ukraine......who is, in fact, an actor. confused

An evening of watching someone in a borrowed 'gown' fanning their face and using their ring fingers to dry their eyes is not for me.

The ironically named MerylStreep grin

It does look more elegant than scrubbing away with a crumpled tissue though ?

maddyone Sun 27-Mar-22 21:30:50

I know that volver as I’m sure you know I know grin
You are at times a bit of a tease aren’t you? The point of course is that it’s not his acting skills that are the point (though I’m sure they’re very fine) but his courage and tenacity are so inspiring to so many people. Whereas on the other hand, the actors/actresses and all the others don’t inspire people to unbelievable acts of courage. Well I don’t think they do. But listening to their speeches you’d be forgiven for thinking that they did. That’s why I no longer watch. I don’t watch the BAFTAS for the very same reason.

Callistemon21 - It does look more elegant than scrubbing away with a crumpled tissue though ?

Or in my case a yard of ratty loo roll pulled from the sleeve of my cardigan.

Jane43 Sun 27-Mar-22 21:36:56

I am interested in films and I like to see which films have been nominated for best picture and try to watch as many as I can but I wouldn’t stay up to watch the actual ceremony as a lot of it is boring to me, especially the red carpet. I always preferred the Baftas but this year I forgot it was on so I missed it. I do like to see a good acting performance recognised and occasionally there are worthy winners such as Anthony Hopkins last year.

I'm glad you get it maddyone wink. I'm not too interested in the Oscars, but I don't feel the need to come online and rant about tokenism, luvvies and all the rest of it. Says more about the poster than the Oscars, I think. Just don't watch ?

Vanessa59 Sun 27-Mar-22 21:41:49

Anthony Hopkins didn't even bother to do a zoom appearance to accept his award last year, so that speaks volumes.
He was probably fast asleep.

Callistemon21 Sun 27-Mar-22 22:54:27

Vanessa ?

maddyone Sun 27-Mar-22 22:55:51

We watched The Father only a couple of weeks ago, at home of course. I thought he was very, very good in it. Such a difficult topic to cover/make into a film.
I’m not surprised he didn’t go last year. I believe he’s about eighty years young now.

Callistemon21 Sun 27-Mar-22 23:03:25

He's 84, maddyone

maddyone Sun 27-Mar-22 23:15:56

Thanks Callistemon, which makes his acting in that film wonderful, because he had so many lines in it.

Callistemon21 Sun 27-Mar-22 23:22:12

We must watch out for it, but whether it would be too worrying and heartbreaking to watch, I'm not sure.

I see there were alarms and excursions, with Will Smith, whom I've heard of, thumping Chris Rock, whom I've not.

Not condoning thumping or foul language but if the report is right that Rock was taking the p. out of Jada Pinkett Smith's alopecia, I can see why her husband was annoyed.

eazybee Mon 28-Mar-22 07:07:21

Just shows what trash the Oscars are.

mokryna Mon 28-Mar-22 07:15:09

Thank goodness I can listen this morning to BBC 4 as too much time is being spend on the Oscars on ITV.

PECS Mon 28-Mar-22 08:23:55

DH & I love film & cinema but often the films we prefer are not Hollywood blockbusters though some are Oscar winners.

I think it is right for lobby groups to raise issues of under representation at such events to raise awareness of bias and inequalities. I don't have a problem with that.
It is an industry award event & I would not want to watch the awards for e.g. Car Designer/ Sales of the year & equally I don't want to watch the film world in-crowd either!
