The Oscars tonight. Anyone tuning in? ?

Not me

The Oscars became an irrelevant embarrassment when they started pandering to the demands of every minority group’s bleating.

The horse has bolted, nobody cares anymore. The winners are selected by tokenism and box-ticking; not merit.

People used to watch for the glamour and escapism. They switched off because they are sick of being lectured and subjected to politics. They should just scrap them.

In my opinion.
What do you think?

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 27-Mar-22 17:44:08

Not in the least bit interested in the Oscars, or any of these ceremonies. Grumpy old bag here.

Haven't watched for a long time Urmstongran definitely an embarrassment.
I've got several good books waiting for me, much better way to spend the time.

I Agee with you, it was said on the news that viewing figures had dropped last year

Grandmadinosaur Sun 27-Mar-22 17:51:50

They don’t interest me in the slightest. It’s quite obscene the money spent on outfits etc. Then they try and preach to us mere mortals. It’s a big no from me.

Zoejory Sun 27-Mar-22 17:52:12

It used to be such an event!

But no, I won't be watching nor am I interested in who wins what.

Casdon Sun 27-Mar-22 17:53:38

I won’t be watching. Coverage starts at 1am in the UK, which is also a big disincentive.

TerriBull Sun 27-Mar-22 17:55:01

Good God No!

Most of the films sound woeful, with a couple of exceptins. I'm disappointed I didn't get to see the new West Side Story I think I'd have liked that and I did see Belfast which I enjoyed. My husband watched Power of the Dog on Netflix and tells me it's utter shite, as I can't stand Westerns anyway with the exception of Butch Cassidy I can't be bothered to watch it to see whether I'd agree.

Couldn't really care less who wins with the exception of Jessie Buckley nominated for best supporting actress, I think she is very talented. Anyway who wants to listen to all that load of old bollocks those very protracted acceptance speeches. In my opinion these award ceremonies have had their day, life's moved on and there are far more important things going on in the world than all the back slapping and gushing that goes with such events.

I feel very uncomfortable with all the razzmatazz and self adulation displayed when a war in Ukraine is going on. No doubt someone will suggest that a display of blue and yellow ribbons will make it all worthwhile.

Poppyred Sun 27-Mar-22 17:59:27

No, life’s too short.

Jaxjacky Sun 27-Mar-22 18:34:50

Nope.

MerylStreep Sun 27-Mar-22 18:39:01

Urmstongran
I thought you put that very politely. I use somewhat stronger language to describe what I call oxygen thief’s.

Greenfinch Sun 27-Mar-22 18:41:15

Definitely not. I haven’t a clue who any of the so-called personalities are and I think the amount spent on it is obscene. I haven’t watched for many years.

honeyrose Sun 27-Mar-22 18:41:29

No - I don’t bother with all that. I must admit I do like to see who’s wearing what (on the internet, after the event), but the gushing often tearful, embarrassing acceptance speeches (thanking everyone including the family cat) really irritate and annoy me.

EkwaNimitee Sun 27-Mar-22 18:44:59

Totally agree Urmston. Weeping/bleating/ lecturing luvvies are simply an embarrassment and mega turn off. So I do!

Ladyleftfieldlover Sun 27-Mar-22 18:46:43

I’ve never watched it. What slightly irks me is the ‘goodie bag’ worth 1000s which all those nominated get given.

Calendargirl Sun 27-Mar-22 19:01:48

Never watch it, but listen on the next morning’s news to hear the main winners. Never heard of some of the films though, or their stars.

The acceptance speeches are cringe making, when I do catch bits of them. Years ago, a gracious and dignified thank you was made and that was it, not drama queens and floods of tears.

rafichagran Sun 27-Mar-22 19:08:00

No, I find it cringy. X

ShazzaKanazza Sun 27-Mar-22 19:11:19

Definately not. I can’t stand the celebrity pandering but do like to see the gowns they wear.

Riverwalk Sun 27-Mar-22 19:18:30

With the eight hour time difference I don't think watching the ceremony live has ever been much of an event here in the UK?

The winners are selected by tokenism and box-ticking; not merit.

Do you have evidence of this?

I don't take a great deal of interest but can't remember many black, gay, disabled, or any other minority group being Oscar winners.

wendyann23 Sun 27-Mar-22 19:20:13

Nope, can’t be bothered.

Iam64 Sun 27-Mar-22 20:13:38

No change here. I enjoy the movies but have always found occasions like the oscars thoroughly awful

Oopsadaisy1 Sun 27-Mar-22 20:14:49

Nope.

BlueBelle Sun 27-Mar-22 20:41:39

No never have and never will not interested in self adulation

volver Sun 27-Mar-22 20:48:32

I mentioned this recently on another thread. My departed MIL use to describe films as rubbish, but that was mainly because she didn't understand them, though. But even she would never describe someone as an oxygen thief. Because that's just unpleasant.

Can you not just say they're not to your taste and go off and watch Dancing on Ice or something?
