Vanity thy name is woman (yes I know it’s a misquote)

I have a terminal cancer diagnosis and have just had second session of chemotherapy which I hope will buy me time. I shall sign up for any trials offered and plan to cling on as long as I can !
I have a wig ready. I had my hair cut very short last week and it looked fabulous though I say it myself (actually so did everyone else !)
But today my hair is almost gone.. Why am I so upset? What does it matter really ?
Actually I think I have to admit I’ve always been rather vain. I care what I look like, how I dress etc. (for myself not other peoples opinion) Do you ?

Sorry…I’ve rambled on.j

Fanny your comment seems rather flippant towards the OP, considering her sad news. I may have got it wrong, of course, as tone is difficult to ascertain.

It’s because she said that she was crying.
I was offering her a metaphorical tissue, just as I would pass her one in real life.
I also gave her ‘a massive, massive hug’ up thread.
I’ve ‘known’ Lucca for a good while.
I have sent her an email this morning.
I’m not happy at all about having to reply like this on Lucca’s thread, (sorry Lucca) but I really needed to clarify things.

We are all different of course but sometimes a bit of lightheartedness is a welcome relief in these situations. And from my experience of Fanny’s posts, she is concerned and caring. And from my experience of Lucca, she has a sense of humour

I think in response to me saying you’d all made cry !

I didn’t take it as flippant don’t worry

Can't speak for Lucca, of course, but that kind of remark wouldn't bother me.

What I couldn't stand was people who put their heads on one side, gave a little smile and said, in a faux-sympathetic voice, "And how are you?"

Grandmabatty Thu 07-Apr-22 15:38:15

Then I am happy to be wrong. As I say, sometimes tone is difficult to ascertain.

Lucca, I've always liked your style but even more so now. I already knew of your diagnosis from previous mail. I'm so pleased and excited at your faith in your oncologist. Wonderful. Such positivity is a joy to behold. ?

Lucca so sorry to hear your diagnosis. It's a tough call. Vanity, does anyone really care? Treat yourself to an array of wigs, scarves, headbands, whatever takes your fancy. Rabbit on all you like - the trusty Gransnet team will support you all the way. Take good care flowers

Yes, true.
It's difficult to judge online without tone and expression.

Fortitude…
That reminds me. You know when you say “these things are sent to try us” ?
An old guy I worked with once said the rest of that saying is..
“.. we must bear them with Christian fortitude and strength”. Love that,
I’m a non believer but I’ll give the F and S my best shot

Lucca, I am so sorry to hear your news. It sounds like you are chin up and taking it with as much positivity as possible. flowers

And as to vanity, I think we are all in some small way. Carry on with the wig if it is comfortable, and put some lipstick on if it cheers you up. Big supportive hug from me.

So sorry to hear about your diagnosis lucca I have been a member of a cancer support group for around 10 years. many of the members undergo a stem cell transplant which is a pretty awful ordeal for most of them, but the thing that really seems to terrify most of the women is the thought of losing their hair. The man not so much, my husband hardly seemed to notice his had gone. I wouldn't call it vain, it's just that people pretty much comment on our hair from the time we are in the cradle and it becomes part of our personality. Here's hoping you and your wig are going to be around for a long time yet.

Bellanonna Thu 07-Apr-22 22:22:12

Un forte abbraccio, Lucca X

Lucca, I’m sorry to hear the sad news. Yes, please accept all treatments offered and I do hope that something will work and you will have extra, good years ahead.
Did you read yesterday about Nikki Chapman (from TV) ? She was diagnosed with a brain tumour. They operated but couldn’t remove it all. A ‘slither’ was left behind. But, at the last scan, the ‘slither’ had completely disappeared. So miracles do happen. I’m not being flippant or religious. Just saying.
All the best Lucca - keep fighting flowers

Kate1949 Thu 07-Apr-22 22:52:39

Hair loss is massive. Not as massive as cancer obviously. Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood refused chemotherapy for cancer because he didn't want to lose his hair.

Oh, buggers Lucca. I am deeply saddened to read your news and I always enjoy your very reasoned posts.

Vanity, or whatever you like to call it is important as we all like to feel we look our best. I would go the whole hog and treat myself to anything to lift my spirits.
Nothing compared to what you are experiencing but I am currently recovering from a fractured hip. Everyday clothes are too uncomfortable to faff about with and I have just taken delivery of a gown and matching palazzo type trousers from 100:stars to wear around the house and every morning I hobble to the kitchen table on my zimmer where I have set up a ‘slap’ area to apply a more presentable face to the day. Works for me and yes, to music which has got me through tough times to lift my mood to a better place.

Sending you the strongest vibes to continue enjoying life.
Much love. x
