Ordinary everyday things I no longer know how to do

I just realised today that even if I was minded to look for a job I wouldn't have a clue how to go about it.
When I was job hunting jobs were advertised in the paper and you sent in your CV or requested an application form, filled it in and posted it back. Then you waited for a letter saying you had or hadn't been called for an interview.

That all seems to have changed.

What other ordinary things would posters not know how to go about in this digital age.

I'm not even 60 yet shock

sara they re ridiculously difficult aren’t they and every make seems to have a different way of doing it
I had a child’s pram set in the other day well it had three of us beat, scratching our heads and in the end a customer helped us ?

Is there a ‘smug’ emoji?

What would you do if your Kindle would not come on and all the instructions on how to turn it on were on the Kindle no printed instructions ?
We can all feel cleaver and complacent until something happens to us personally and we realise we are not in charge of the situation as we would have been.confused

Mine decided to go blank a couple of days ago I charged it fully and restarted it appears all ok now

You access YouTube through the internet on your Smart tv or phone.

I tried to call my sister in law yesterday to find out if my nephew's girlfriend had had her baby.
I'm in London, she's in Somerset.
First, because that's the last place we communicated, I messaged her on Instagram (as you do).
Then I thought she might not spot that so, impatient, I sent an SMS. Then I thought what the hell, it's the weekend so I called her mobile.
She told me some of the news then started cutting out because sometimes she can't get a signal at the top of her house. So we hung up and I tried again via Whatsapp.
Same issue. Or maybe a different issue. Who knows. So we hung up and she called our landline.
Our landline, rarely used, is a rather ancient cordless phone, and the battery runs down in a few minutes, which it did, so we had to say goodbye.
Honestly, we might as well have stuck our heads out of our windows and shouted.
In the old days I would have just picked up the phone, which would have been firmly attached by a cable to the wall, and she would have picked up her phone, also firmly attached to the wall.

Oh I’m seriously impressed by this lol. Recently updated from one smart tv to one with better sound and the whole process was traumatic. Swapping all our apps from one set to the other then we have a Humax recorder so that had to be linked in too. Felt very pleased with myself when we did it all without asking the son in law or grandkids.

Tried to use cash the other day, restaurant wouldn't take it.
My son in law paid with his watch!

My daughter got Alexa though and all the lightbulbs. That would be no good to me- I'd spend half my time arguing with it!?

I have a banking app on my phone which can be quite handy but always worry about what happens if I lose phone. Last week heard from bank that we are now able to put banking app on more than 1 device. DH added his to his I-pad and all worked but then tried to do mine and even the app on phone went caput. He spent a good 45 mins on phone to bank to re install app, he was being told to go to different screens on i-phone and do all sorts of stuff I didn't have a clue about. Could never have managed this myself on a million years. BTW I'm another who can't work the TV.

My father died during covid...I had to deal with everything online....Also had to apply for probate...I spent many days crying as I had so many documents to fill out and returned.....Thank god my hubby is more savvy than me...

When I was looking for jobs you just turned up at the company and provided you seemed like you could do the job you started the next Monday. CVs were not a thing, neither was "how to impress". They didn't want people who were too full of their acheivements, they wanted people who would just learn the job and do it. That was in the 1970s when workers kept going on strike and there were more jobs than people to fill them. Employers were just pleased to get someone.

I know, we hardly use cash these days! My son always asks me if I've got a bit left for when he needs air for the car tyres.?

Essentiallyjane Mon 11-Apr-22 12:26:44

I’ve never had a CV. I was a radiographer and moved through various hospitals on phone calls and interviews. I would know where to start now ?. How times have changed.

Grandma2002 Mon 11-Apr-22 12:31:21

My son despairs of me so sends my granddaughter to sort me out. Trouble is she is so fast I can't see what she is doing so when I need to do it again I can't remember! I just use general principles and hope for the best.

Thanks for the tips ladies it nearly went through a window I was so frustrated. I did get it on but it had all the books I had deleted in the last 8 years from my old kindle which had a different operating system.
Today's problem is I can't open the box with washing tablets in, it has a child and obviously granny proof lock.grin

My writing has got worse through lack of use, along with mental arithmetic , since I got a calculator!
Anyway, who thought of the idea of "Modern" maths? Totally useless as I can't remember the last time I used a quadrilateral equation in my life!

Tulpia Mon 11-Apr-22 12:35:02

I feel defeated by a lot of modern life. My basic PAYG mobile died and I haven't replaced it. I still use money when I go shopping, I'm defeated by the childproof locks on boxes of washing pods and have to wait for my cleaner to open it. The alternative is me hackling at the box with a huge carving knife like a mad person. I also often find vacuum packages containing eg meat, are impossible to open with the tiny corner triangle so resort once again to hacking with carving knife.

Hollysteers - hope you have better service from Talk Talk than I did. Kept charging me more for "fast broadband" despite the fact that it is not available where I live and probably never will!! - only 7 properties up where I live.

I recently purchased aconfused'container ' you fill with water to which you add weed killer. No not a watering can but a technical piece of equipment which comes with a list of instructions/battery etc etc that has to be charged and then inserted etc etc into the appliance. Sound simple ?so where am I going wrong

I’m ok with the tv and iPad, but the phone is my downfall. I finally gave in and got a smartphone a few months ago, just in case it became absolutely necessary to use qr codes for some things. This phone isn’t nearly as user friendly as my old Nokia. It’s cumbersome, and I find the keyboard more fiddle than the letters and numbers buttons on the old phones. I’ve done nothing with it apart from text and make the odd phone call. I’ve not set up the internet, and I don’t know what all it does and no instructions came with it. This morning, as I crept along the hall, so as not to wake my son, a loud voice said,
“ what can I do to help you? “. I’d obviously pressed something by accident on the phone in my hand!

I love my technology and do most things online, shop, pay bills, talk to friends and family, watch movies etc. I havnt carried cash for years and I cant say that I find any of it difficult

Coastpath I recently treated us to a swanky Sky Glass TV (and it’s navy blue ?)
You literally talk to it and tell it what you want to watch.
After four months I still have to explain to DH how to use it, every single time ?

I’m fascinated by this. What happens if your WiFi goes down? Does it mean that you can’t watch TV?
