I would have thought that such groups would want to gain support for their cause.

By disrupting life for everyone else they risk losing sympathy - for themselves, if not for environmental causes.

Don't like their methods but I do believe in the publiic right to protest. Did I not read somewhere recently that the government were trying to quosh this right by statute?

I don’t understand why they can get away with blocking roads and access to refineries. I thought the police had been given additional powers to enable them to stop this. No diesel to be had around here. Delivery drivers rely on it to earn their daily crust and of course the emergency services depend on it. These people disgust me. Selfish ba***rds.

The mobsters have been blocking the depot 5 miles up the road from us this week, just off of the M25 no consideration for anyone, no alternative ideas

I can see where they're "coming from" in that they see the urgency of change (although I just read a scientific article which said, basically, we've left it too late and we're fucked regardless) but I agree they're going about things in totally the wrong way.

No consideration for e.g., ambulances blue lighting a critical patient to hospital, or a fire engine rushing to save somebody's house and life, or a person rushing a much loved pet to the emergency vet on top of the more everyday consequences to people who can't get fuel to get to their work/interview/babysitting appointments just to think of a few.

Absolutely NOT the way to get the general public backing their ideals.

I don’t know how they think a lot of the housing stock in this country can be effectively insulated. They really don’t understand the technicalities. And we are working towards greener energy but it doesn’t happen overnight. They’re just a bunch of selfish, clueless (and in the main jobless or they couldn’t be there so we’re probably enabling them) bast***s with their heads in the clouds, intent on causing trouble.

If it wasn't this 'cause' with them it would be something else. Some people genuinely want to effect positive change and work hard to lobby, fund raise, change public attitudes etc

Others just want to cause trouble, or justify their existence without having to actually work hard.

There is a thread somwhere on GN, which complains that in the UK we are just 'complainers', not activists. Then we gt thsi, where people, mainly young ones, are activists on an extremely important and urgent issue, and people complain about them doing that action!!!

Obviously, our own immediate needs for moving about are SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT, than the future of the Planet!!!!

I think that these protesters are not using this technique to get more supporters, but bringing the whole issue to the front for us all to investigate. Why are there absolutely no laws at all in England, any more, regarding base insulation to be part of of new builds????

I was listening, Saturday evening, to a broadcaster from central London, who stated that it was the action of the Police in closing so many roads, that was causing the real problems, not the demonstrators, and he felt this was a deliberate plan to make these demonstrators as unpopular as possible.

The fact that this is nowhere in the Government policy shows just how little they understand about "governing". It seems to be nice, insulated homes for them and drafty, poorly insulated ones for others, with the poor paying the poverty premium they so often get hit with.

Yes, there are difficulties but a government not doing anything is the biggest one. It is possible to raise the standards of newbuilds straight away. We know this would not feed through for a few years. However, for each year the standards are not raised it's longer until it feeds through. This government is doing nothing, zilch, nada where this is concerned.

Isn't it interesting that the papers being read on this thread only tell us of those trying to raise the issue and not of the government's tardiness? I wonder why that could be?

My husband was a property developer and I believe what he tells me about the hopelessness of trying to effectively insulate many old houses Daisyanne. There’s only so much you can do to many of them, at considerable expense, and it won’t make the big energy savings that XR claim. Insulation standards for new builds are already extremely high - we live in one (6 years old) and the insulation and consequent warmth are brilliant.

I am not saying it's an easy fix. Some things are though - loft insulation is a quick cheap fix and windows leak a lot of heat in lots of buildings. We have terrible housing stock in this country and more informed people than me have repeatedly said so.

Loft insulation is indeed quick and cheap. Double glazing helps but should the government (i.e. the taxpayers) be paying for the double glazing of all the many thousands, possibly millions, of single glazed houses though (where it's allowed - not often allowed in listed buildings)? Can you imagine the cost? Then you're left with the problem of the many thousands of old houses which are built with only a single skin of brick ... it isn't as easy as XR think.

The only two people I know personally who've been arrested at XR events are GPs.

We don't know anything about the personal lives of these people and personal attacks based on an absence of knowledge seem unfair. Criticise their actions by all means but don't fall into the trap of making false assumptions.
