Where are the grandads on Gransnet?

I have been an observing member for some time and rarely post, although I find many of the discussions interesting.

I have always been curious as to how few men seem to be on here. Maybe they are observing from afar too? wink

I have seen a very small number of posts from grandads and would love to know how they figure in proportion to the ladies. My guess is no more than 15% of total members. Does anybody know the figures?

No idea, but sadly there are a few widows on Gransnet as women tend to live longer than men. That may be one explanation.

I think women are more into social networking and chatting whilst men are more into TV and games.

Rameses are you male?

Elizabeth27 Tue 12-Apr-22 17:53:00

There might be more than you think, nobody knows who anyone really is unless they attend the meet-ups.

There used to be a thread Grandad’s shed, not sure why it fell by the wayside.

Rameses are you male?

Yes. That was why I was asking the question.

There used to be a thread Grandad’s shed, not sure why it fell by the wayside.

It's still there and I've looked at. The most recent posting was in January this year (by a male) and, as far as one can tell from nicknames, every response was from a woman!

Fennel Tue 12-Apr-22 19:22:41

I've wondered about this too. I'm female and been on here many years.
I used to think it was because of the name of the site and if they changed that the Grandads would come flooding back.
Thank God I still have a husband and we have many disagreements. But when I cool down. I'm glad for his very different points of view.

Try reopening it Rameses.

It drives me nuts that people, who I assume are women, say *ladies' an awful lot.

I would love more men.

OakDryad Tue 12-Apr-22 19:25:36

I would guess that 99.9% of the members are women. It's an offshoot of Mumsnet after all. I would like to see more male contributors but I suspect the name of the forum alone, its logo and most of the content would deter men from joining. It does say in the small print that all are welcome but the name and logo suggest otherwise as do the general features.

On gn obvs. The one I have at home is quite sufficient.

The clue is in the name, Gransnet, which might put some Grandads off. Also, as someone pointed out, the demographic is older, and some members have sadly lost their partners.

The grim reaper seems to have carried off a few of us males (is it safe to use that word?) over the last couple of years. I follow the political threads, and others of general interest, and contribute now and then, sometimes incurring the wrath of those who despise the patriarchy as a matter of principle.

Mostly, I try to inject some lightheartedness, following my favourite epitaph:-

Life is a jest, and all things show it;
I thought so once, and now I know it.

Mind you, I did have a limerick deleted once.

Think many handles do not suggest gender. There may be a few on here who do not wish to reveal that fact?

BlueSky Tue 12-Apr-22 20:13:37

Agree that the site seems to be geared towards women. Guess most men don’t like engaging with on line chats anyway. Also those few known males have often been frightened off.

Elegran Tue 12-Apr-22 20:35:50

Sometimes a poster who has been posting on various subjects without mentioning whether they are male or female does let slip in passing something which reveals the truth. I have noticed about 8 or 10 regular posters who have done this - but I don't remember now who they were!

A few years ago there was a kind of census of GN members. I think that about 95% of those who voluntarily replied were female, so that makes about 5% male - perhaps the rest of the men were staying under the radar in case they were expected to cut the grass or put the bins out.

This reminded me of a card I saw yesterday. A woman was pictured with the caption 'I often dream of having two men at once. One cleaning and one fixing things'.

Among my same age (70 -80s) friends, it is mostly the women who are active on social media. I think that is because they women mainly worked in admin or clerical jobs where they easily transferred from typewriters to computer keyboards, whereas the men were either building industry or management, with a secretary, clerkess or 'the wife' doing the invoices, letters, accounts etc. For those people now in their 50s and 60s who were working when computerisation was introduced to all aspects of work and life rather than only tasks of a clerical nature, the balance of male/female computer users evened out. When DD1 did a post grad degree in programming back in the 1990's she was one of only two females in the class' Computing had become a mainly male preserve.

My husband, a grandad to our daughter's five and one year old, often asks me what "the Grans" are talking about, or think about a certain topic.
With me to report though it wouldn't occur to him to read or comment for himself ?

We used to get posts from Mick. Grandad1943. And an Aussie bloke who always signed off with Oru , I wonder what’s happened to those Grandads. Are they all locked in their sheds!, Come back if you can. You are missed, well, by me anyway

OnwardandUpward Tue 12-Apr-22 22:58:32

The last Grand dad who posted on GN most recently was called Standad (if I remember rightly), but he didn't come back after everyone tried to advise him not to ask for a sleepover with a nine year old.

Chestnut Tue 12-Apr-22 23:43:32

Rameses I thought from the name you were male as it made me think of Yul Brynner in 'The Ten Commandments'. ?

Aldom Wed 13-Apr-22 04:51:11

There's Mick who faithfully starts off the Good morning thread at around 6am.
