We live in the same area and we had a water softener installed. Although the initial outlay cost more, we have saved money because we don’t have to use strong cleaners or limescale removers.

Check out Nancy Birtwhistle Green and Clean

She has all sorts of natural remedies and her limescale one is called Pure Magic. Basically it is citric acid and it works.

I tried Coca Cola, cistern went brown and took ages to clean. Bleach is not a limescale remover. Viakal oe similar is good, possibly bicarbonate of soda if you want to be greener.

Have you tried white vinegar? I've found it much more effective than bleach on really stubborn stains.

I’m also a fan of white vinegar. I use it for loads of jobs, As well as the loo I use it in the washing machine instead if fabric softener, cleans windows better than anything else, kills weeds without dangerous chemicals. Descales the kettle when mixed with bicarbonate if soda and countless other jobs. Cheap too.

Definitely Viakal - the liquid not the spray.

I also live in Herts, the limescale is the hardest in the country as far as I'm aware. Over the years I've used everything you can imagine to keep the loo stain free with only very hard work doing the job, using various cleaners and of course the ubiquitous pumice stone

However I found this, and it's been an absolute game changer. I was extremely sceptical but because it's cheap I thought I may as well try it.

I couldn't believe how well it worked, it's
an absolute toilet magic fairy ... it removed all the hard water stains in minutes, and now I just put a harpic tablet down the loo every other night before bed.. and as soon as any HW stains start to appear in with the Magic fairy cloth.. and 2 minutes later all is super clean again..

Lots of good advice above about getting rid of the scale. then once you have, you really need to stay on top of it. I suggest either one of those blocks in the cistern, or putting one of the descalers overnight every night!
I have lived near that area and the scale is awful! We have a rainwater harvester now - no scale, but soetimes it looks rather green!

PS: assuming you are on mains sewage, otherwise it's another story!

get Harpic 100% Limescale remover! the blue bottle that staes on bottle 100% limescale remover....... plunge most of the water out of the loo then pour loads down and leave overnight...like new in the morning! does what it says on the bottle!
done this when daughter moved into new flat and the loo was grey with limescale

A pumice stone will remove tough limescale without scratching porcelain. I tend to use hot vinegar on a rag to soak any heavily stained areas.

In days past when living in Army quarters, I dealt with this by sitting on the floor in the bathroom, removing water from the u-bend with a ladle and then scraping the scale off with a knife!! It worked very well and was actually not as difficult as it sounds!

If you don't want to use harmful chemicals then citric acid might work or you could try these:

As a fellow SW Herts resident, I sympathise! HG Toilet Cleaner Gel will tackle those rim to waterline stains, apply, leave overnight, scrub off, reapply leave and scrub, two or three goes should do it. Or try www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00AZZ6A04?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&tag=gransnetforum-21 if you have several to do.

A dishwasher tablet is apparently good, just leave it to soak, overnight would be ideal.

JaneJudge Mon 18-Apr-22 12:13:09

viakal?

tanith Mon 18-Apr-22 12:06:34

I live in London a hard water area and use Parazone it works a treat my loo has no limescale in it. They do say a bottle of cola works but I’ve never needed to try it.

Having lived all over the world, here in SW Hertfordshire, the water is the hardest we have ever encountered. The loos in the house are now slightly streaked with yellow limescale and no product {including the black Harpic} works to shift this horrible mess. Does anyone please have any practical advice, for which many thanks in advance.
