IRRITATING ADS

Do any of you have ads that really drive you mad? My 2 are the detergent ad where they sing "Where is the sun?" None of them can hold a tune, and the song is banal, and the other ad is that rip off of the Beyonce song "If I were a boy". That kid murders it by singing "If I were a toy", and he mangles the song too. Do any other grans have ads they utterly hate?

I have to say I hate the Macmillan ones.
False advertising in our case (though I know others have had better experiences)

A friend of mine had a very bad experience with Macmillan, MissAdventure. A very brisk, no-nonsense sort of doctor (female) who’d never met her before, called to see her when she was all alone, and told her in very blunt words that she was going to die, and did she want to die at home, in hospital, or in a hospice?

Yes, my friend did die, but she was always a fighter who needed to cling on to some sort of hope. So me that was both cruel and brutally insensitive.

I dare say it’s unfair of me, since it was years ago now, but I’ve never supported them since, though I do support a similar charity.

Derek and June flogging insurance. The really creepy elderly man dancing and then falling asleep in his chair. I assume it's a recliner ad. Verisure couples instantly getting an alarm. Any adv with Philip Scofield. The awful family on holiday which is supposed to be a pastiche of Matilda. Actually, there are very few which I find witty. Definitely a grumpy old woman ?

The over-50s dating ones, not that I’ve seen any for a while The white-haired bloke with the toothy grin used to give me the creeps!
And the women invariably looked as if they’d hardly hit 50 yet.

I absolutely loathed a Marie Curie one years ago during a time when my daughter was going through breast cancer treatment. " You have two weeks to live why not get your hair done ?" I couldn't believe the insensitivity but it was obviously meant as a way of making life seem more normal. I have never given to that charity since then but to other cancer charities.
On a lighter note I hate the " Here comes the sun" one too and the other washing one where everyone dumps filthy white sports gear in a machine for a cool wash and it comes out sparkling ! Yeah right.

Grandmajean Tue 19-Apr-22 12:37:35

Not "Here comes the sun" - that's another song altogether. Think they're complaining about no sun

Maywalk Tue 19-Apr-22 14:54:40

Yes I hate them all, especially the damned Erectile Disfuntion one coming on at lunch time and then going straight on to sanitary towels.
They certainly DO not help my lunch to go down.

I have started switching the TV off now during lunch and asking Alexi to play some big band music such as Glenn Miller and many more .
Suits me a lot better at my age of 92.

Daisy, daisy, daisy daisy - enough to make you want to strangle them - just joking

Blinko Tue 19-Apr-22 18:34:29

honeyrose

Claudia Winkleman shampoo ads with her impossibly glossy locks. Anything with Philip Schofield or Rylan whatsisface in. Aaaaaagh!!!!

All of the above, plus anything with the bloody meerkats. OTOH, I love the AA ad with the knitted dog and the fan.

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 19-Apr-22 19:23:57

Yep- Daisy, Daisy, Daisy - that voice at the end. I'd be happy to give the girl the name of a surgeon to remove her adenoids.

Brownebear Wed 20-Apr-22 11:25:57

So agree. I loathe this advert

Brownebear Wed 20-Apr-22 11:30:39

Totally agree. I have to turn them off. As someone who has experienced the damage equity release can do to a family. Do these celebrities have no conscience

goose1964 Wed 20-Apr-22 11:30:55

I hate the shampoo one where she whispers over 40 as if it was something to be ashamed of

Altissimma Wed 20-Apr-22 11:35:12

It's heartening to realise that I'm not the only one who is disgruntled by these inane adverts. Plus it's the lead-ins to programmes that aggravate me, too. We record and watch QI and they were advertising Citroen with a supposedly French street scene with northerners doing the ee-bah-gum accent -the dolled up woman having a go at the man in the car; another of the same with two poncey young men "eets ab-so-lute-ly gorjeous!" Grrrrrr!

Toffee1878 Wed 20-Apr-22 11:39:32

On The Beach. I want to punch the male child in the face and that song irritates the life out of me.

Jaye53 Wed 20-Apr-22 11:41:21

The funeral ads are toe curling. and the actors try to be jokey about dying !oh hunky dory !! as they try to convince the public.yuck. and on all day time too. Where are trading standards?

Purplepixie Wed 20-Apr-22 11:42:30

Lots! Smug faced Claudia with the absolutely gorgeous hair! Funeral and stair lifts. Tena - no I would rather wet myself! Sexy perfume adverts. Nationwide! The list goes on…….

jobieP Wed 20-Apr-22 11:42:33

I cannot bear 'Arry advertising gambling. (radio) I always turn it off.

jaylucy Wed 20-Apr-22 11:45:53

I'd definitely say the Verisure ads - obviously done on a budget where only 2 people are allowed to speak - even though there are often more than 2 in the scene. Not to mention that the man that turns up to fit the equipment isn't asked for any ID!
The Ourtime ads - all of them!

sazz1 Wed 20-Apr-22 11:57:26

I hate the sweets advert with men trying to speak like children. Also the Claudia winkerman hair advert.
On a positive note I love the skating tortoise ? I think it's for trains.

missdeke Wed 20-Apr-22 11:57:49

Are you ready to Butlins? When did Butlins become a verb???? Do you pod? Another verb????
Appalling diction on most adverts, singing donkeys, all super noodle ads, basically I don't think there are many I can say I enjoy. Thank goodness I have a mute button grin

Oldwoman70 Wed 20-Apr-22 12:05:11

I don't watch much TV (prefer my DVD collection!) but of the ones I have seen equity release, funeral plans and gambling top my list of the ones I find annoying.

The gambling ones always show groups of people laughing and having fun when in reality the ads are aimed at people alone in their homes. The ads always end with the advice to "gamble responsibly" which is the last thing these companies what people to do

lilyH Wed 20-Apr-22 12:13:18

June from next door with the pop out eyes talking to Derek about life insurance hate it

Chestnut Wed 20-Apr-22 12:22:09

I'm another who records and fast-forwards the adverts but the two which have stood out as being just totally awful are the meerkats and the Go Compare opera chap. I think the sound of an advert is important.

mrsHom Wed 20-Apr-22 12:25:52

Mattresses! Mattresses ! Mattresses ! So many mattresses.
(what do they do with the ones that are sent back? Repackaged and sent out again? I do hope not. )
