Three cheers for St George ???????

Research suggests that

His dad was from Turkey
His mum was from Syria
He was a soldier in the Roman forces
He died in Palestine
He never visited England
He didn't kill a dragon
He is a Christian saint
He is a Muslim and Jewish prophet

The message from Saint George is that it does not matter what nationality you are, be kind and do good to people, whoever they are!

Happy #StGeorgesDay

A Happy St George's Day to everybody. Have a great day, whatever you are doing.

Love that Maw! I only knew 2 of the points.
Every day is a school day on GN!

There is a big St George's Day festival at a stately home near us. We took the GCn every year when they were smaller and they were entranced by the smoke breathing dragon. It had the same status as Father Christmas and the Tooth Fairy until the year GS piped up in a piercing treble 'The dragon's wearing trainers!'
Happy St George's Day everyone!

Wasn’t he a bodyguard for the Christians during the Crusades? Hence his adoption as our Saint?

It will never be as popular a day as say St Patrick’s Day ☘️

Several older friends of ours always wear a rose today. I think that custom is slowly dying out.

MawtheMerrier Sat 23-Apr-22 10:39:56

I am not English by birth but do live here now and I always regret the association of the St George’s cross with the more extreme nationalist groups in our country, not to mention drunken sports (usually but not exclusively football ) fans and those who seek to denigrate or oppress those of other ethnic heritage.
There is not the same racist baggage attached to the Scottish Saltire or the Welsh dragon so why can we not reclaim St George and his flag?

I wish we could Maw but in some ways it’s been tainted now.

There will be lots of countries celebrating his day today.

BlueBelle Sat 23-Apr-22 11:03:21

The cross makes me so uncomfortable that I wouldn’t fly a flag

He s the patron of quite a few countries a man of the world but no dragons in England !! I wonder why he was chosen ? And when ? Must do a Google search

Thanks for all the interesting information, I did think he emanated from Turkey or thereabouts, He sounds very interesting. Maybe he did slay a dragon, people from the Middle East travelled, possibly got to the Island of Komodo, although highly unlikely and stumbled across one of those gigantic Godzilla type lizards, I'll cling to that grin because it's in keeping with my image of him!

GrannyGravy13 Sat 23-Apr-22 11:15:36

Wasn’t our previously patron saint St. Edmund, and I believe he was beheaded by the Vikings?

Coastpath Sat 23-Apr-22 11:15:52

I feel uncomfortable with the flag for the reasons MawtheMerrier says. In fact, it's made me squirm a bit at all flags now which is a shame.

Seeing people flying the Ukraine flag here warms my heart though.

We were on a campsite last year where a man put up a different flag every day of the week on a 20 foot flag pole outside his tent!!

Happy St George's Day to all the English GNers! ???????

I know what you mean about the flag having acquired some unfortunate associations, but I still love the sight of an English village church with a St George's Cross flag flying on the tower.

Urmstongran Sat 23-Apr-22 11:38:54

Actually me too WhenIwasyourage.
I’ve just looked out from our verandah here and there’s one flying at our local Anglican church across the way this morning!

Happy St George's Day everyone!

Show of Hands' "Roots" has an interesting take on the flag. Just take it back. Make it your own.

I've lost St. George and the Union Jack
That's my flag too and I want it back

Wheniwasyourage Sat 23-Apr-22 11:43:43

Yes, Urmstongran, that's just what I mean. Thank you!
