Rant about unicorns!

Why are unicorns just for girls?? I have a five year old grandson who loves unicorns but every bit of clothing with them on is pink. All the birthday cards and presents are addressed to girls. Give boys a chance!
It’s the same with rainbows for goodness sake except they’ve been taken over by various disparate groups. Give them back to children and adults who have no message to give.
This was supposed to be tongue in cheek but I might be more annoyed than I thought.

Little boys wear pink today! In fact my grandson is clad in a pink t shirt as I type. He's doing a spot of gardening with Grandpa.

This is not something I had looked into so googled boys' clothes unicorn, there are many items that are not traditional girls' clothes.

The rainbow clothes are suitable for all children.

Can’t think of any reason why boys can’t wear pink, or rainbows, but a quick search found loads of other colour unicorn-related stuff

You don't have to take on board dominant social meanings or connotations of colour or images. If boys wear pink or rainbows it doesn't make them feminine or gay. My DGS wears a lot of clothes from girls ranges, because sometimes the range of colours is nicer. I'd like to see anyone miss gender him as he barrels past, roaring, waving a homemade weapon (none given to him by us, I hasten to add).

I don’t know when unicorns became cuddly, rainbow tailed, glitter farting ponies. The unicorns in the books I read as a child were large, powerful, dangerous, magical beings to be approached with caution.

Loads if you look. Joules do a t-shirt for starters in dark colours with a unicorn emblazoned on the front. Nothing wrong with boys wearing pink either. 2 yr old gs is what would have been called a real boy into trucks and dinosaurs but he was there all dressed up in fairy kit with eyeshadow and lipstick, courtesy of his older sister. He didn’t mind one bit. It’s other people’s perceptions that are the problem.

A bit like your average Scot. wink

That’s me blushing!

It was meant to be this

Unicorns are on the way out judging by the amount of unicorn related items we get in the charity shop Dozens and dozens all shapes and sizes get donated
We have one little boy (not at all girly) who buys up our barbie dolls luckily the mum and dad don’t have a problem who knows he might make his fortune as a dress designer ?
Don’t worry about it don’t forget many years ago when boys wore dresses up to the age if 3/4 pink was a perceived boys colour
Doesn’t matter does it? loads if men wear pink shirts etc

It's those horns, they are quite dangerous if you provoke a unicorn.

Unicorns aside, my DGS1 was quite put out when he started school. He expected to go in a skirt and tights like his big sister. grin

Volver it would appear that my family in Scotland are not average then. We must all be above average, as they say.

Blossoming Sat 30-Apr-22 13:17:23

TBH I’m more worried about the glitter farts Callistemon21. That stuff gets everywhere.

Clothes as just pieces of fabric worn by people

Anybody can wear anything they like

Galaxy Sat 30-Apr-22 13:59:39

Of course they can but its damaging to both boys and girls that clothes and the stereotypes associated with them are targeted at either sex.

Hithere Sat 30-Apr-22 14:04:36

Stereotypes are in people's heads and it is something we have to get rid of

Categorizing what a person can do based on their genital is harmful

Hithere Sat 30-Apr-22 14:04:45

Genitalia

Galaxy Sat 30-Apr-22 14:06:30

Yes which is why we need to challenge the nonsense dished out by clothing manufacturers. I think there was a recent analysis of the slogans on girls clothing compared to boys, it was depressing.

Blossoming Sat 30-Apr-22 14:35:05

So is categorising what a person can do based on their age, or impairments. However, some things are a matter of practicality. I’ll never be able to tap dance so I’m not going to apply to join a class then kick up stink when I’m refused.

Callistemon21 Sat 30-Apr-22 14:56:17

I went to tap dancing lessons for the first time when I was 45.

I wasn't very good - no co-ordination

There you have it MiniMoon but I guess his sister could wear trousers if she wanted to. confused

VioletSky Sat 30-Apr-22 23:56:38

You can have anything put on a t-shirt online

It is about time we did away with boys and girls sections in clothing shops. Let children wear what they like

I know this thread is a bit old but this might help someone in the future - we've just bought a unicorn towel thats turquoise and pink that could suit both girls and boys, from here:

Great for imaginative play too.
