Synonyms for ‘Fat’ that aren’t Cringeworthy…?

When would you need to describe anyone as fat?
I was with a tall thin friend recently and she began to look at tunics. The Seasalt type. I was surprised that she bought the size 20.
She found it the most comfortable and a decent length.
I envy her confidence. Having been brought up by a mother who quoted the Duchess of Windsor "you can never be too thin or too rich" I guess I am hardwired to dislike fatness.
I wish I didn't. I don't want to be skinny either but I am always wishing I was a size smaller.

"just say what size in clothes you are since you are talking clothes." - that'll be a complete no. If you've over a size 16, for instance, you better bet that people will be very judgemental! Look at Grammaretto's comment, for instance - 'hardwired to dislike fatness'. I reckon there are a hell of a lot of people who feel that way.

I'm surprised that someone who is tall and thin would buy a size 20 - surely it would have been far too big, baggy and out of proportion.

A word that has crossed my mind recently of a portly person is "deep", as in as deep from front to back as s/he is wide. Purely descriptive and not out loud.

Well-upholstered was my gran's favourite for tubby ladies.

I was trying to kindly describe someone recently, and said that she was Plumptious. Sounded quite nice to me.

As for portly, I think of that for short fat men.

I think you can only say the word "matronly" if you do it in a Kenneth Williams voice.

Oh yes.

My Mum, who had a sweet tooth but never put on weight no matter how much she ate, described someone she knew as "easier to jump over than walk round"

I know, it's hardly flattering.

I used to call toddlers chubby - if they were.
As I said, I was surprised the friend chose the larger size Riverwalk but it looked fine . I guess she could always take it in if too large but squeezing into a size too small is no fun.

I’m cuddly and proud of it, most of all OH just loves it.
I still wish I could loose some but I’m happy and healthy.

My grandson described me as 'soft', it was in the context of a description of why he loves Grandma, and he write ' I love my grandma because she is all soft when she gives me a cuddle'.

To me, ‘comely’ must always be teamed with ‘wench’!

Broad across the beam,by my grandmother who was also broad,as she described herself.
