Royal Mail Parcel Collect is the title - yet it is for letters too

A thread with two purposes.

One purpose is to raise awareness that the service exists,

The other purpose is to ask of user experiences.

Royal Mail has a service called Parcel Collect.

To me the web page is a bit confusing, as Collect and Send seem to be two different things.

I am not sure, but I think it might be that Collect is if the posrage is already on the item, either by stamps one has bought or a reply paid label.

Send seems to be the way to start from zero.

It seems to be built in to the Send option that one then buys two items in the one checkout basket, namely the postage fee and the collection fee.

So on this web page

send.royalmail.com/?collect

to start from zero one needs first to click on the black filled rectangle that has Send an item in white letters on it so as to get to the correct dialogue panel.

Clicking through one gets offered a choice of five types of item

Letter

Large Letter

Small Parcel

Medium Parcel

Tube

If one wants a letter, then one finds three options offered immmediately, none of which is ordinary first class post.

However, ordinary first class post is available, but initially hidden, though clicking on Show 2 more services displays it as an option.

I have not used this yet, but I have found out about it in case I need to send a letter somewhere when a telephone call or an email are not enough to do what is necessary.

Originally, the service needed one to print the label oneself from a file sent once one has booked, but that has now changed and there is an option for the postperson to bring the label at no extra cost.

I saw something somewhere implying one is handed the label and affixes it oneself, but that does not seem to be absolute as the postperson will pick up from a "safe place" if one is not at home, but only one item on each occcasion in that situation, so that would need the postperson to affix the label.

Presumably that extends to being at home yet wanting a social distance pickup.

There are various preset options for "safe place" and also an "Other" option which has a text box which seems to accept up to 50 letters and spaces.

One pays at the time of booking by a credit card or debit card and is sent an email confirming the arrangement.

Blockage of the small intestine can be caused by one’s diet. Just saying..

I will try to answer, but I do not understand precisely what you are asking.

Could you possibly rephrase the question please?

Cabbie21 Mon 23-May-22 20:46:51

I would like to ask you:
Are you living a solitary life, without making any personal contribution / connection to your community or individuals in it, or to anyone else anywhere( apart from online)?
If so, and this is your choice, where do you find any meaning or purpose in staying alive?

I guess we would all like to know.

I guess Cabbie21 has put my questions so much more clearly and succinctly than me.
Thank you C21!

I have been thinking about these questions.

I am finding the questions difficult to answer.

The answer to the first question from Cabbie21 is Probably almost yes

The second question, taking If so as if true as this is a Boolean value, and If this is my choice is not either true or false absolutely, but it is how it is and, unlike some media reports purporting rather sweepingly that elderly people are longing to get out and about, I am content and feel no particular wish to go anywhere and I suppose that for a couple of decades I have felt much the same, though did go out from time to go to shops such as B&Q or Currys when I was still driving but really only if I was going to try to get something, not just going out to have a look around. It was not always so, when I was in my twenties and early thirties I often used to go out to places to have a look around, particularly on Saturdays, but gradually I got that I would rather do some gentle gardening rather than go out unless I wanted to get something.

So, as to the question that arises if I get thrpugh the Boolean AND of the if statement, which I will do for this discussion, I get to the question where do you find any meaning or purpose in staying alive?
I am still thinking about this, having already given the question a lot of thought at various times since it was posed to me.

It did occur to me though, bearing in mind how some people say that many of the rules and attitudes in society are due to patriarchy, does that question originate from what might be called couples-archy in that had I been married and written "We keep ourselves to ourselves, we do a bit of gardening, we do jigsaw puzzles together, we watch films together, we watch television news together and comment upon politicians to each other" that such a couple would not be asked about where do you find any meaning or purpose in staying alive? because their lifestyle would not jar with the expectations of the couples-archy that exists.

So if I understand correctly, since your early 30s you only ever left your house in order to go to a specific shop for a specific item, and presumably to go to work? And since you gave up driving you haven’t left your house? What happens if you or your cat need medical assistance? Do you have any interaction with your neighbours? If not, have you ever considered that if you were too ill to summon assistance your body could lie undiscovered for a very long time?

GrannyGravy13 Wed 25-May-22 09:17:04

Germanshepherdsmum unfortunately the scenario you outlined crops up time and time again.

Kathy72 Wed 25-May-22 09:23:42

Sometimes, saying “I’m happy as I am” is because it’s a (safe) habit. If one has tried various social situations, or even bring out immature on one’s own, and does not feel happy, then fair enough. On the other hand, life is gif living, and sometimes one tries something new or different and it is enjoyable and stimulating. Have I misrecalled, or were you interested in steam trains? Depending on where you live, there are interesting places to visit - York Rail museum for instance. Or chess clubs, places where there are gardening talks, etc

Kathy72 Wed 25-May-22 09:24:36

^bring out immature?? Being out in nature!!

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 25-May-22 09:25:31

Do you suffer from agoraphobia?

Dickens Wed 25-May-22 09:46:27

If so, and this is your choice, where do you find any meaning or purpose in staying alive?

Although the lifestyle in question is not one I'd enjoy - am I the only one who thinks this is a rather unpleasant question?

To me, it reads rather like, "your life is worthless".

If someone is happy to toddle around in their own limited little world, gardening, listening to the radio, whatever - then why should anyone question the validity of them "staying alive"?

OK, perhaps it's just me...

Parsley3 Wed 25-May-22 09:54:39

It’s not just you Dickens. I hope that the person who posed this question has a good think about how it reads.

FannyCornforth Wed 25-May-22 10:02:23

I’m agoraphobic.
I hope that my life has purpose.
I’ve actually welled up at this sad

FannyCornforth Wed 25-May-22 10:03:14

I wish that I hadn’t just happened upon that comment

Witzend Wed 25-May-22 10:04:51

I often use Click and Drop, but take whatever it is to the parcel box or the PO, if it won’t go in the postbox.,

It’s very easy to print a label off, I don’t see the problem, as long as you’ve something to stick it on with.
I’ve always found the instructions - including for Collect if I ever wanted it - perfectly easy to understand.

Riverwalk Wed 25-May-22 10:17:19

A lot of 'Mean Girls' behaviour aimed at the OP.

He doesn't have to justify his existence and it's unkind to poke fun at a loner.

StarDreamer Wed 25-May-22 10:18:31

I understand Fanny, the question has affected me too.

Some people in this thread have jumped to conclusions.

The question does seem to have a whiff of setting up the camps about it.

Sundaze Wed 25-May-22 10:23:04

There appears to be a "pile on".

No harm is being done by the OP.....What has happened to live and let live?

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 25-May-22 10:24:10

Perhaps it would help if you were to clarify your position, as I asked. What conclusions have people jumped to which are incorrect?

Grannynannywanny Wed 25-May-22 10:30:55

This thread makes uncomfortable reading. StarDreamer has stated he is content with his lifestyle. He appears to have lead his life this way for many years. He comes on here for a chat and company.

I’m pleased that you are content in your life StarDreamer. Sadly not everyone can say so. Wishing you continued contentment and good health.

Necessary parts of being able to print a label is having a printer and it being possible to connect the device being used to book the collection to a printer. The collection of the parcel could be set up by using a smartphone. I have only got a basic smartphone, an IMO Q2, that I bought to gain experience of using a smartphone. I don't know about other smartphones but the IMO Q2 cannot connect to a printer.

Cabbie21 Wed 25-May-22 10:37:14

I apologise that the wording of the question upset or offended. By using the phrase " if this is your choice", I was trying to ensure that those who do not have a choice would not feel challenged. By the way, I did not start the asking, I just tried to reword it.

StarDreamer Wed 25-May-22 10:41:12

On the practicalities of using the Parcel Collect service.

Has anyone here sent something and used the option of the Royal Mail postperson bringing a printed label and seen the label please?

The reason I ask is I am wondering how big is the label, as I am wondering if it is small enough to be affixed to a DL size envelope, the size of envelope in which one can send a sheet or sheets of A4 size paper that has or have been folded into three layers.

I once suffered from agoraphobia. It is one of the most debilitating and insidious condition one can imagine. In fact, to understand it you have to experience it because trying to explain the horror of standing in the isle of even a small supermarket, shaking with uncontrollable and inexplicable fear, almost feeling that you are going to die if you don't get out and into the safety of your home - it is impossible to convey the crippling nature of it.

Yet, I still woke up each morning with some enthusiasm for the day in my then limited world. Because that little spark of 'life' inherent in one's psyche - nature's way presumably of maintaining the instinct for survival - propelled me to get up and face the day. I felt there was a purpose in 'staying alive'.

flowers for you FannyCornforth
