Enough with the jubilee already.

The celebrations haven’t started yet and I’m already fed up with them.
I bought a loaf of bread yesterday and it had a silver crown on it and a jubilee message. When I think of the cost of redesign and printing a new message, it must impact on the price I’m paying.
Then I’ve just seen the itinerary for next week and I’m bemused by the timetable.
There’s a glorious fly past again with 40 planes and helicopters etc. I always remember my husband laughing at previous fly pasts as the UK has such a paucity of planes to do it that some of them were training planes and clapped out aircraft to bulk up the numbers.
I also didn’t realise the bank holidays were Thursday and Friday.
Oh well soon be over and we can have an in depth examination of Meghan and Harry and what they did/didn’t do, who wore what and how much did it cost etc. Ammunition for news articles for months and posts on gransnet.
Bring it on.

Jubilee

Zoejory Sun 29-May-22 22:25:51

My friend was on the phone today telling me that nowhere near her has any bunting flag etc etc. Well there's none here either.

However are we not jumping the gun somewhat? Is all the shenanigans due to start Thursday?

I'm happy enough to have a RF. To be honest I don't give them a huge amount of thought.

However if people want parties that's great. If they don't, that's equally great.

It's OK to do what one wants after all.

Apparently it's not great to want to celebrate.
It's not great not to want to celebrate and avoid it all either

???

Absolutely
Live and let live.

I'm guessing that for many who are participating the pleasure is in the planning for the event. A bit like Winnie the Pooh said about tasting ?.......the anticipation is the best bit!

nadateturbe Sun 29-May-22 22:58:23

Why is it that some royalists are personally insulting to republicans. I'm not a moaning misery. I love having fun and celebrations. Just not celebrating the RF.

Zonne that would make me angry too.

Thank you all for your good wishes ?
I'll tell my daughter to pack the children's water shoes Maggiemaybe, good idea.

maddyone Mon 30-May-22 01:27:23

If there’s a bunting shortage it’s not down to me. I haven’t bought anything to do with the jubilee and don’t intend to, but I wish everyone a happy time if they choose to celebrate.

vegansrock Mon 30-May-22 06:42:23

Roll on next week when we can forget about it.

lemsip Mon 30-May-22 06:43:14

Best check the numbers. My post, 20:07. There's more of us than there are of you

Why does everything have to be reduced to competitive confrontation - you versus us, us against you?
I think this is the main reason I and others who have voted with their feet find GN less and less attractive than when we joined years ago.
Does it bring sone people satisfaction?
They’re welcome to it.

NanKate Mon 30-May-22 07:08:51

Well I for one will thoroughly enjoy the celebrations of our wonderful Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. ?

I’m with you Urm. ??????????

When we return home tomorrow, having looked after our grandsons for 5 days ? I will sleep, have a cuppa and put up the bunting.

NanKate Mon 30-May-22 07:11:58

Cherrytree what a lovely lot of celebratory flags. ?

Thank you for your generosity of spirit, as usual maddyone. Life is what you make it, either way. Sorry the Devon weather has turned a bit iffy for you, but there's still lots to do here. I hope the Devon cheeses were good.

I agree with MawtheMerrier about the competitive confrontation which is tiresome. I try to say my bit, (admittedly a few times), but don't understand all the picking apart of comments which do little more than reflect posters' personalities anyway. Live and let live!

I am amazed with the amount of people on here who are moaning about the Jubilee, i guess you also moan about anyone who has served their country !!!, what will you all moan about next, what alot of miserable people here,

These are are the words which prompted my post about numbers. The words moaning about how many people don't want to celebrate the jubilee. The words calling us miserable.

But mostly, the words asking if we moan about people who serve this country. Maybe it's just me who finds such a comment completely unacceptable. What a disgusting thing to say about those of us who find the whole thing mawkish. It's scary in a way; "come and celebrate this rich woman and the flag of our nation, or people will think you don't support our country." Well we know how that ends.

There's threads about trifles and home movie documentaries where posters can share their undying support for the Queen and her offspring. But come on a thread that someone has started to say how fed up they are of the whole thing, and you might find you have to stand up for what you think. I'd welcome that. I certainly don't welcome posters implying I must be a traitor or that we're all nasty women just out for an argument with the poor shrinking violets.

vegansrock Mon 30-May-22 07:46:26

I’m not miserable I just have no interest in all day drinking, trifles, or the RF. I’m from a military family so smears about those who serve our country are offensive.

... as a Republican (of sorts), I echo that sentiment. I have a soft spot for Elizabeth (though I don't "lurve 'er") and have wondered on occasions what she would have been like if she'd been allowed to be a 'free spirit'. She's a product of her era and will stoically do what she considers her duty until the day she sheds her mortal coil.

It's a page in our history, and in a couple of weeks it will all be forgotten and the reality of the drudge of everyday life for so many will return to normal. I doesn't have to be like this. Even with a monarchy, we could still thrive as a nation. Norway and Sweden manage it...

Joseanne Mon 30-May-22 08:07:50

Talking of serving one's country, my English friend who lives in Normandy told me this morning they are having a street party in the town with all the works. A case of vive la libération, vive la reine. Anything goes.

volver Mon 30-May-22 08:13:31

Et c'est "service" comment, ça?.

Lucca Mon 30-May-22 08:24:07

I don’t think it’s competitive but I do agree with Volver feeling the need to respond to comments like this

I am amazed with the amount of people on here who are moaning about the Jubilee, i guess you also moan about anyone who has served their country !!!, what will you all moan about next, what alot of miserable people here

Plus as I said before we don’t all have the possibility to have loads o family barbecues and street parties and not being specially enthusiastic about the jubilee does not make us miserable it makes those saying it very insensitive and judgmental.

The comment amount these whole serve the country is offensive too.

Kandinsky Mon 30-May-22 08:33:24

There’s nothing wrong in ignoring it all ( my dh will be grin ) but he just doesn’t talk about it or even think much about it.
It’s the people who go on for hours about how much they hate anything jubilee ( or royalty ) it’s try too hard somehow.
I just have visions of grans wearing a sex pistols tee.shirt acting like teenage anarchists, desperately wanting to be ‘too cool for school.

Lucca Mon 30-May-22 08:39:44

Nobody is going for hours in real, life about not being keen, any more than those who are keen going on about being keen !! ……well I’m not.
I’m not sure I’ve had a conversation about the jubilee with more than one couple and that was very briefly in passing…

volver Mon 30-May-22 08:42:10

So what's your advice Kandinsky? "Sit down and shut up, you're making yourself look ridiculous?"
