We had a wonderful Jubilee celebration in our village culminating in the lighting of our beacon. The church was the focus and was beautifully decorated
BUT
This was spoiled by some lowlife stealing a huge 10ft x 15ft flag, off a ship, loaned by one of the villagers, and flying from a flagpole in the churchyard.
We're just SO sickened, and its spoiled a lovely memory. The police don't think we'll get it back.

Sickening. Nice people getting together for a nice reason then some lowlife just can't understand it and has to spoil it.
Maybe just impulsive stupidity?

Namsnanny Sat 04-Jun-22 12:08:23

I'd feel the same way ExDancer?
Does any home owner near the church have CCTV? A door bell camera?
I suppose the Police will have thought of this, but recently they have come under fire for not using the resources they have to investigate burglary or thefts, so maybe a shove in the right direction?

Callistemon21 Sat 04-Jun-22 12:23:41

Im sorry to hear that, Ex-Dancer. What on earth are they going to do with it?

If anyone else is thinking of putting up a flag, retainer rings are a good idea.

ExDancer Sat 04-Jun-22 12:30:34

Our house is next to the church, but there's a field between us, and sadly we don't have cctv.
No one even thought it'd be stolen. Its so huge they can never put it up - they'll sell it I suppose. It apparently is worth £500+.
I don't think anyone knew about retainer rings either, being so rural we were just too trustful. Its only recently we started locking our doors.

Well, I'm sorry but also astonished - it's not something anyone would want to buy without knowing its provenance!

Look out for it when Jubilee parties are shown on tv and in the local press.

sorry, I don't believe it!

Aveline Sat 04-Jun-22 15:44:09

Don't believe what?

timetogo2016 Sat 04-Jun-22 15:49:48

Keep your eye on Shpock and ebay ExDancer.
And if there are car boots near by it may be a good idea to have a gander around.
Low lives are everywhere sadly.
I do hope you will all remember the fun you had, don`t let low lives spoil your day, they would love that.

Is there any chance at all it could have blown away? If it's an old flag the fabric could have torn and it could be caught up in a tree.

I know nothing about flags so this might not be possible, but I can't believe someone would do something so mean as steal it and hope there's an alternative reason.

Callistemon21 Sat 04-Jun-22 16:09:50

lemsip

sorry, I don't believe it!

If you Google the news, you will find that several have been stolen, lemsip, it is thought by republicans.

Presumably being anti-monarchists goes beyond debate in some cases, and extends to stopping others enjoying themselves.

JaneJudge Sat 04-Jun-22 16:11:50

That is some die hard Republicans, going around stealing flags in the middle of the night confused presumably it is just thieves of any persuasion?

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 04-Jun-22 16:31:04

Our local paper reported the theft of a life size cardboard figure of HM from outside a shop.

volver Sat 04-Jun-22 16:33:35

Well that did make me laugh out loud, quite a lot.

Republicans. shock ??‍♀️

Sorry, ExDancer, I'm not laughing at what happened to you. I hope you get it resolved.

Callistemon21 Sat 04-Jun-22 17:35:28

Just repeating what had been reported in the press.

Mind you, reading some of the hearsay and reports someone might have read somewhere repeated on GN is funny, I agree.

Cabbie21 Sat 04-Jun-22 17:42:14

Our town had a lovely knitted crown and figures of royalty on the top of the main pillar box but it was stolen on Wednesday. Why? CCTV was not working. Such a shame for all who have worked hard for others to enjoy.

Very unfair comment.
