Is this ridiculous or a good idea?

I have been reading about river cruises in Europe.

I can't go.

Maybe some others might like the idea but can't go either.

I am just wondering, would it be possible, popular, would people join in, to have a Gransnet simulated virtual river cruise with a thread running for ten days or so, with an itinery and on each day people finding links and discussing the place where the cruise is "pretend" located at the time.

As the title of the thread asks, is this ridiculous or a good idea?

I'd like to come along but I get terribly sea sick envy

My late sister went on a river cruise. I think she would have been in her 70's. She said the passenger's were Very Old. So for that very reason, "I'm out!"

Well what to you expect the ages to be on Gransnet?

Ah, that has been solved. For those who wish to stay on land there is a bus variant, where you stay in hotels on land and join us for shore excursions if you wish, and, if you wish, for dinner on board each evening when we are moored in a quay.

Sorry she found that. We find passengers range from forties to 70+. Often lots of Americans and all friendly and willing to mix.

On my cruise it's advisable to pack your own picnic and stout walking boots! ? Also, the Northumbrian dialect can be a bit head scratching if you hail from much further south. My son-in-law had to keep asking us for translation of simple phrases e.g. in the (forgot to mention, serious omission) highly rated Granby Inn, Longframlington "What can I get you?" He found this question totally incomprehensible! ???

Why not a virtual cruise we have virtual everything else from sport to food even people. I quite like James Martin's food, cocktails could be that chap on Alan Titchmarsh's Sunday morning programme. Do we need Susan Calman to go around asking us who we are and all about ourselves?

May I tag along as an observer, please?

sounds fun. I fancy a river cruise more than a lot of time in the open sea

Yes, you are welcome.

The cruise ship is currently moored at the Quai Claude Bernard in Lyon, France.

And you can go back in time to Friday to join the cruise and then get to where we are now.

The cruise ship is due to begin travelling southward tomorrow morning to make the journey of about twenty miles to Vienne, where the cruise ship is due to be moored overnight.

Please click here to join the cruise

oodles I went on a Mediterranean Island cruise several years ago. The featureless time at sea was mostly overnight when there was dinner and entertainment on the itinerary. We docked at the various islands in the mornings. We left promptly at 6pm in the evenings to travel on to the next port of call.

Not for me - not being able to go on a holiday is horrid, and pretending I was would make it even more miserable.

Oh I'm sorry to hear that.

Is this thread not redundant now that SD has started his virtual river cruise?

StarDreamer Sun 12-Jun-22 17:32:06

This thread got a mention in Gransnet daily today, so it may get more views and more posts yet.

MawtheMerrier Sun 12-Jun-22 18:33:38

As I explained to you once before SD when you were Elderly Person the “highlighting” of a thread is simply a case of what’s at the top of the list of Active conversations and can include spam threads and even deleted threads.
I repeat, a thread asking if it is a good idea to have a thread “following” a virtual river cruise seems a bit pointless not to say redundant when that thread is already under way.

Well some people have posted about their experiences of cruises and that is interesting. So, if people choose to keep posting here, then fine.

If any of you watch YouTube look up 'Wandering Thomas'. He does walks around Holland, no commentary, no music just lovely walks all through towns and countryside in rain and sunshine. I love them.
