Virtual cruise Lyon to Avignon and Arles

StarDreamer Wed 22-Jun-22 21:26:46

I am just outlining options, it is people to reach a decision by discussion amongst themselves.

MawtheMerrier Wed 22-Jun-22 21:22:58

As you choose sounds like a plan

StarDreamer Wed 22-Jun-22 21:14:38

Ah, crossposted with the post by CaravanSerai

You could if you wish cruise along the coast of the south of France before taking the cruise ship back to Avignon.

Or as you choose.

StarDreamer Wed 22-Jun-22 21:08:54

It appears that there is a TGV journey taking a little over 4 hrs, from Avignon Tgv to Mulhouse Ville, which is near Basel.

So if you take this cruise ship back to Avignon, then catch the TGV to Mulhouse Ville, you could get to Basel, then cruise the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam, then catch the TGV to Paris to board the train for Venice and Istanbul.

I like Rhinemaidens too.

I'm happy with the format but I've lost the thread a bit (pun intended) as I thought we were in Aix then going to Marseille then to work our way along the coast eastwards to Monaco. It may well be that I drank too much and have missed a few days! Where the hell am I???

So are we planning to get to Monaco then go north to Basel and pick up a Rhine cruise to Amsterdam taking in Strasbourg, Koblenz, Cologne etc.

How about staying with this thread to Monaco if that's where people wanted to go - wasn't there some talk of Macron or did I miss that? I'm a tad to the left for his liking so I wouldn't be invited anyway! ... and then launch the Rhinemaidens with a huge bottle of something.

You could do the train ride, or just say you got on at A and got off at B. Maybe a short thread just for the train journey, linked from this thread, for anyone who finds the thread in the future.

Golly. I'm a writer of short stories.
So much opportunity deriving from these journeys?

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 22-Jun-22 20:59:23

I’m very happy to carry on with our cruise and do the OE trip later. I hope to collect my new German shepherd in about a couple of weeks and I’m sure she would be delighted to be ship’s dog.

ixion Wed 22-Jun-22 20:56:34

Who will route plot?
Germany and all things Germanic a bit tiger country ish to me.
I know they do football. Do they do culture? (says she, hopefully)

StarDreamer Wed 22-Jun-22 20:55:48

At the present rate the thread will reach the 1000 post limit before long.

So you could, if you wish, steer this cruise ship somewhere, park it proiperly then catch a train to where you want to get on a different cruise ship on the Rhine.

The website www.rome2rio.com/ can probably help you find a train.

I prefer RhineMaidens - it makes it clearer who we are - no medical certification will be required for potential passengers (or crew) so we remain inclusive, but any mention of “Revellers” might discourage the shy, refined , sheltered likes of Doodle, germanshephersdsmum or Lucca etc
I wonder if GSM* might like to bring a German Shepherd (look out Sven, you may have competition) along as ships dog?

ixion Wed 22-Jun-22 20:47:55

FWIW, I would prefer to keep this Cruise going in its existing format, nipping over to continue up the Rhine for the oompah and leather shorts and black forest gateaux.

Get home, have a rest then all aboard the train with a new thread and a new passenger list.

But that's only little ol' me.
I will-as many of you know - go anywhere, do (almost) anything for free food and drink, sparkling repartee (it'll happen, sometime, I keep telling myself) and fun cameraderie.
?Girls just wanna ...?, as I've stated many times!

CaravanSerai Wed 22-Jun-22 19:58:34

I wondered if we could do with a new thread. This one has over 800 posts now so if it’s taken up with the same enthusiasm we’ll soon be needing a new one anyway. A new title might draw in some new travellers?

How about The Rheingold Revellers? Calling ourselves the Rhinemaidens might be a tad too late unless anyone is feeling particularly nymph-like.

Other suggestions? Or stay with this?

ixion Wed 22-Jun-22 19:30:31

Doodle

Joseanne I hope you’ve got more than one of those delicious pastries/tarts. I want one too. ?
I want to go to the oompah, lederhosen places and on the Orient Express. Cruise first, train later?

?. Exactly my thoughts Doodle
We'll need to plan a timetable, departure date, Chef d'equipe, all sorts.
Let's get this Rhine-y bit under way.
It is the same boat? Hope so, as I have just located the heads?

Just throwing up/out ideas

Or just throwing up?

Joseanne Wed 22-Jun-22 19:19:08

I'm a bit verwirrt too as to where we are heading. ? I think I've been transported to Brittany.
Must have been that Paris - Brest I ate, after Molly was talking cakes.
Who is in charge?

ixion Wed 22-Jun-22 19:17:14

MawtheMerrier

I thought we were continuing our river cruise up the Rhône to the Rhine, land of the oompah bands, Lederhosen and all those towns called Bad Something or other which promise so much!

We are Maw, indeed?
I initially looked up Le Train Bleu as a potential voyage exotique to get us back from Marseilles au fin.
Saddened to see that LTB no longer operates, it occurred to me that we could have a new return trip in the future and the OE seemed to have legs (as it were).
Just throwing up out ideas.

Callistemon21 Wed 22-Jun-22 19:10:39

And beer steins!!
?

Yes, please. I like those old traditions.

StarDreamer Wed 22-Jun-22 17:48:27

You may have a Ladies Only carriage on the Orient Express if you so wish.

You could send a note to the people constructing the replica train asking that one, suitably labelled with a sign using an Art Nouveau typeface, is included in the train.

Would you like a Ladies Only Restaurant Car too?

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 22-Jun-22 17:41:35

Are we not having a Ladies Only carriage on the Orient Express?

^wouldn't want to over-egg the pudding^

So tonight's dessert pudding is île flottante using dozens of eggs to make white fluffy clouds floating on a silky sea of crème anglaise.

Some of the posher restaurants I’ve visited only give you one île-I suppose that’s their idea of a desert-île!
Visiting cathedrals always makes me wish for a religieuse.

StarDreamer Wed 22-Jun-22 17:12:11

ixion wrote Disappointed to find that Le Train Bleu is just a shadow of its former self

If we can imagine we are on a train, travelling from Paris to Istanbul via Venice, then we can imagine that even now a replica of the original train is being built in France, planned to be ready to use by the time that this cruise completes.
