A very nostalgic (cheap!) lunch

Terry Wogan said the only tomatoes to have with bacon and eggs were tinned. I agree.

I’ve never heard of that as a meal though I do use tinned tomatoes in loads of recipes. My favourite cheap lunch at Glasgow Uni was a hot Forfar bridie and beans. Curiously if I ever use beans now and all I have is baked beans I have to wash the gloopy sauce off the beans before adding them to the meal.

For anyone wondering about the benefits of cooking tomatoes it is to do with the cooking breaking down the tomato and produceing more lycopene. Cooking tomatoes does dramatically reduce the vitamin C content so a combination of cooked and raw is best.

Niucla97, I made an ocean of tomato and roasted red pepper soup last December, for Gdcs’ school Christmas fair - 8 litres of it! The red pepper part was from paste in jars, too - it turned out very well.

As a side thought. Mushrooms on toast was a favourite of mine. OH had apparently never heard of such a monstrosity! Not the tinned creamed ones (also very yummy) but just fried.
I'm hungry now!

Oh no, tinned tomatoes on toast! Brings back the memory of when I was pregnant with twin sons. Shipped into hospital prior to their birth as severely sick, tgere for 6 weeks.Once settled I was offered a meal with tinned tomatoes, had never eaten them before. Loved them, couldn't get enough of them. As I was deemed to be under weight I had 3 courses for most meals with snacks too. Asked what I liked to eat by nutritionist I said tinned tomatoes. Tinned tomatoes basically served with most meals. After delivery of sons meal I had ordered day before arrived, with tinned tomatoes. Started to eat up relishing the thought of tinned tomatoes. Put one forkful in my mouth and couldn't spit them out quick enough. Absolutely disgusting and have never eaten a tinned tomato since unless in a sauce of some kind.

my other half likes tinned tomatoes on toast but I don't like how it makes the toast soggy!

If I have anything that's usually on toast, I have fried bread instead. Like you, I can't stand soggy toast!

Any fresh tomatoes past their best, I bake in the oven along with some sausages or fish.
I never fry them as I can’t stand the splattering.

As for tinned toms on toast, yes, I really fancy that.

Tinned tomatoes on toast was a staple of the nurses home breakfast in the 70s - had to be careful to pierce them carefully to prevent a big squirt of tomato on a white starched apron!

My Gran and Mum used to spend days in September/October bottling, pickling and generally preserving all fruits and veg from our bountiful garden.

So, into a Kilner jar went as many peeled tomatoes as would fit, followed by a tablespoon of vinegar, a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of sugar. No water. Boiled in a water bath or put in the oven, sealed and left to cool.

For breakfast or Saturday tea.....heaven on toast!

Love tinned tomatoes with bacon [and added grilled sausage,] it soaks up the flavour. Grilled or fried fresh tomatoes too, they taste different, often the tinned have a richer flavour. But tinned peas, or tinned mushy peas....bleugh, peas should be fresh or frozen and mushy ones made from dried peas

My staple uni lunch was much less healthy - Scotch pie with gravy (no veg!) - very cheap and filling

Being flash types we used to have half a deep fried mini pizza each. 30p - a bit extravagant but we were only young once!

I love tinned beans, peas, mushy peas but tinned tomatoes yuk. They always look like something a surgeon removes in an operation. Sorry to those who love them.

Yes, I love tinned toms on toast, pepper and a little sugar as suggested, the best treat ever. A memory from my childhood so scrummy but Chacun son gout I guess

I love tomatoes , fresh or tinned! Usually have cherry tomatoes on toast but tinned are fine too!!

Not a tomato lover, though used to enjoy the large, odd shaped plum tomatoes we bought on holiday in Europe. I also only use tinned ones in cooking. I do enjoy cheese, fried egg or banana on toast.

My version is breaded tomatoes served with a meal as a side dish. Can of tomatoes, piece of bread torn up into bite size pieces and added, slight sprinkle of sugar, salt and pepper. Dish up and serve hot with meatloaf, chicken entree, etc. If you like, add a bit of Basil or one of the other Italian seasonings, but don't turn it into spaghetti sauce. IMO, the dash of sugar is needed to balance everything.

What is chicken entree please?

I always add a pinch of sugar to tomato sauce.

I used to love the tinned tomatoes that were served for breakfast in hotels in the early sixties.

I would ask for extra toast to mop up the juice.

I used to love pilchards on toast 25 years ago as a poor student but tried it recently and it was utterly disgusting...

I did buy a toastie maker again for a fiver recently though and baked bean toasties are still amazing

Mushrooms on toast is one of my favourites, but I admit to liking them best of all when in their own mushroom sauce (I've perfected an easy of doing this in the microwave).
