A very nostalgic (cheap!) lunch

Dh recently visited our old university for a talk, inc. a diversion to the ‘coffee lounge’ where we met over 50 years ago.

But it also reminded me of the meal I used to buy in the same student union building when particularly skint, which was much of the time. Tinned tomatoes on toast, 9d!!

I’ve just made myself the same, on wholewheat toast, and very nice too. Of course back then we weren’t aware that cooked tomatoes are even better for you than fresh ones. It was probably white Mother’s Pride or similar then, though.

Mushrooms in toast? Yes please! So yummy. I had them recently on a bed of spinach on lovely crusty toasted sourdough. ?

I used to love pilchards on toast 25 years ago as a poor student but tried it recently and it was utterly disgusting...

I did buy a toastie maker again for a fiver recently though and baked bean toasties are still amazing

We have sardines on toast for lunch sometimes.
With vinegar

I've never heard of this... questions:

Whole, dices or pureed tomatoes?
Heated or room temperature?
Doesn't the bread go soggy?

This does not sound like something I would eat.

I love tinned tomatoes on toast and I used to have it as a child for supper! Great!

Vinegar is great on (pork) pie and (mushy) peas, which was a great cheap lunch available in many pubs where I grew up, as well as being something that we sometimes made at home. In my first real job after leaving school, we would go over to the pub at least once a week to have pie and peas.

Nowadays, I can no longer buy the dried peas to make it, even if I wanted to!

I still have processed peas (not mushy) with homemade fish and chips, though, and splash plenty of vinegar onto those.

Most of the time I eat healthily, but still enjoy these traditional treats now and then smile

Hear hear Monica. I feel exactly that! ?

I have never liked cooked tomatoes but love very ripe fresh ones. Mushrooms on toast is delicious - sliced mushrooms quickly fried in butter and chopped garlic, dash of cream added, seasoning and piled on toast. Topped with chopped parsley.

I love tinned tomatoes on toast and when I see them on a breakfast buffet in a hotel I am very happy. Best student meal was a packet of golden vegetable soup with rice cooked in it, topped with grated cheese (if we had any).

I love tomatoes on toast- but rarely eat them now. I’ve gone upmarket nowadays and eat mushrooms on toast! As a student the cheapest meal in the refectory was soup and bread, but I could make toast in my room

When I was at art school I used to go to the canteen for tomatoes on toast before my evening classes. For lunch I would have had spam fritter and chips, which was the cheapest thing on the lunch menu.

This has brought back memories!! As a little girl I used to love tinned tomatoes on toast for tea. My older brother absolutely hated it and used to tease me for liking them so much. Years later & I was going through a rough patch in my life. I went to stay with my brother & his wife for a while and the first day I was there he made me tomatoes on toast for lunch. I’ve never forgotten that little kindness which meant so much and it was over 40 years ago.

Oh that's a lovely story Grandyma - Thank you smile

Ooh tinned tomatoes on toasted tiger bread, with grated strong cheddar cheese… bliss!

Tomatoes on toast, pilchards on toast poached egg on toast, all yummy. My no-money-left meal at Uni was supermarket own brand instant porridge with milk or milk and water.

Pilchards on toast, yummy. Still have it for lunch if DH is out for the day.

Witzend Wed 15-Jun-22 10:00:36

My very occasional feeling-just-a-bit-flush uni treat-meal, was a Vesta Paella. Forget what it cost but possibly even 1/10d - such extravagance!

DanniRae Wed 15-Jun-22 11:23:02

MOnica - I note you have pilchards on toast when your husband is out for the day. I guess that he dislikes pilchards (in tomato sauce?) as much as I do! As a child I couldn't even stay in the same room as my family if that's what they were eating. And I am generally not a fussy eater!

M0nica Wed 15-Jun-22 14:18:22

*DanniRae, it isn't that he doesn't like pilchards, I have a pilchards and rice recipe that always goes down well, but generally we eat together and the same food, so the only time I have pilchards on toast is when I am in the house eating alone.

Goodness, your uni days must been a lot more recent than mine - no such thing as instant porridge then! I am pretty ancient, though.

We used to have baked beans and an egg on toast.

I really dislike baked beans with eggs now ? although I do eat either separately on toast now.

I recently read (or rather re-read) in a Barbara Pym novel* set before WW2, of a ‘Beano’ being served in a Lyon’s Corner House. Beans on toast with an egg on top.

*Crampton Hodnet, my favourite Pym, very funny.
