On my GN page Last Hour threads appear in alphabetical order and on the Active page the threads are in chronological order of posting.

But on the Active discussions page they do not always appear in chronological order of posting, due to the system not always working properly.

They usually are, SD but yes, I just checked and they were all in chronological order - except yours!!!

What have you done to the system? ?

Apparently some washing machine service men open with "What have you done to it?".

I wonder why.

Yes, a thread could be second on the list almost instantly, that is not an issue for me, as in that case a new post is not left marooned far down the list and perhaps not be noticed.

Just top of the Active list?

A thread being top of the Active discussionsis just a temporary thing, only there until someone posts in another thread, anything from a fraction of a second to longer, depending upon various factors, particulary upon the time of day or night.

Being near the top lasts longer.

But every thread should be top of the Active dicussions list at some time, though the sysem does not always work.

Because my self-esteem is about how I relate to my own inner happiness, of feeling peaceful, of having a sense of achievement and making progress and personal fulfilment rather than being an old man just existing and my mind stagnating.

If I had a sense of self-importance it would be of wanting to be better than others, the top of the class, held in awe by others and so on. I don't have that. I don't feel any need for that.

I need to ignore this as it sucks much of the pleasure and companionship out of Gransnet which was always its strength.
It is not a competition where one thread competes with another for top billing, it is not a competition where any particular kudos attaches to starting a thread, the posts which follow ensure the popularity of that thread (or not) , nobody has ownership,of a thread they started and frankly nobody gives a monkey’s about whether it appears on the daily bulletin. Most of us don’t even look at it.

Two issues separate matters appear to being conflated.

The Active discussions list should show posts from the top down in order of having been posted. The most recent post at the top, then the next most recent and so on.

So posts should travel down the Active discusions list in an orderly manner.

But the system does not always work. Sometimes a thread in the Active discussions list has its time and the user name of the poster altered, but does not move back to the top of the Active discussions list. So a bump, sometimes two bumps, is necessary because the system does not work properly.

There is no reason why a post should not have its turn at the top of the Active discussions system.

Which threads are featured in Gransnet Daily is a choice made by GNHQ by whatever method of selection that GNHQ uses.

Certainly I am pleased if a thread that I have started is mentioned in Gransnet Daily, especially pleased if the thread gets headline billing - it's like winning the jackpot!

A thread getting a mention in Gransnet Daily does tend to get more posts as a result, particularly if it is the headline thread.

I am hoping that the thread Virtual art group Producing art using the Paint program

gets a mention in Gransnet Daily. Headline billing would be great, but any mention in Gransnet Daily would be good.

Why ever does it matter?
I have never totalled up the number of different threads on any one day, but why should any one, two or three feature as “top billing” over any other thread?
Is it more worthwhile?
Is it likely to be more helpful to members?
Is it necessarily better or worthier than any other thread?
My answer would be “No”
There is an element of hubris in wanting any thread one started to be “top” of the Active list, but IMO it is absolutely meaningless.

This is a genuine question SD -
Please can you tell me why your top billing, fleeting or otherwise, matters so much to you?
Do you think other people are influenced/affected by what comes top of the list?
Surely these three or four highlighted posts in the daily newsletter serve only to showcase, to act as a taster for the wide-ranging dozens of varied threads contained therein?

Would it be reasonable, in your view, for the recipients to form a balanced decision whether to proceed to peruse the whole site based purely on your winning thread and, say, two others in the daily publication?

In other words, does it really matter what is selected for front page headlines?

As I pointed out, the previous post that I had made had not gone to the top, I was not bumping so as to get the same substantive post to the top twice, I was bumping to get the substantive post its only appearance at the top.
So that was, in my opinion, fair dealing.

I'm not certain, but I think a thread does not get mentioned more than once in Gransnet Daily.
