Not seen that in a long,long while

I've never seen a postman with a motorbike. In our area they either walk, normally with a trolley but sometimes carrying the post or they drive a van in the more rural areas. Sometimes they use a combination, drive to the area, park up and walk round then move on to the next area.
Must admit I haven't seen them using a bike for a while.

Well we don’t have postmen on motorbikes they are either on push bikes or walking with trollers or bags I expect they have shorter rounds than ‘down under’ though

I remember British Gas used to send apprentices out on push bikes for jobs,and the milk mans horse and cart,havent seen them for a while

I thought our postmen had to stop using bikes years ago, health and safety I think.

Our posties use vans pushbikes and trollies it’s a lady on the bike though lol. Used to love the coal man and milkman with horse and carts.

I saw a man cycling along the other day all dressed up in a suit. That used to be a common sight but nowadays they usually wearing shorts or joggers or that awful lycra gear.

I wear that `awful` lycra gear, why is it awful vintagejazz? It is so very practical for those of us that want to exercise by riding a bike.

Living in a rural area, our post is delivered by van.

Lyra is "awful" in my opinion too Vintagejazz and karmalady - I don't think anyone says it's impractical, it's just really unattractive to see.
I think that's the extent of the "awfulness" of it.

I wore a leotard for ages for dancing and drama studio work but would never have wanted to wear it outside. It was totally practical for the job it's designed to do. Likewise swimsuits in the pool etc.

I suppose if the "awful" bike lycra was only worn at the track no-one would bother commenting. It just (to my eyes) seems so out-of-place on the high Street!

I am aware that there are road races BTW!

The postman drives here in a van then walks around with the post. It arrives anytime between 10.30 and 1.30.

I haven't seen post deliveries by moped/motorbike either.

We get a man round here calling 'any old iron' but I never see him. I'm not sure what he actually collects.

I wish someone would put leaflets through the doors saying when they would collect old electricals, that would be very handy. Then you could leave them out.

Our postman today was riding a pushbike. Usually they have a motorbike these days. Are they cutting costs or was he a health conscious person? Must be a bit heavy carrying the mail around that way. I should point out that we are lucky if they deliver more than twice a week here- not sure why. This is 4.30 pm in the afternoon, obviously our road is not a mail priority!

One of my DC in Australia mentioned this a while ago, nanna8 (could be two years). She spoke to the overloaded postman, who was very unhappy that his van had been exchanged for a pushbike, due to the restructuring of Australia Post which also caused a lot of redundancies, apparently.

The service from Australia Post seems to be dire now, if you don't mind me saying! No parcel delivery even in cities and parcels have to be collected from the Post Office. It's very slow and far worse than the service here in the UK.

And, of course, in more rural areas, no post is delivered, it has to be collected from the nearest shop with a PO facility.

I hope ours here doesn't go the same way.

Where we lived previously, the post lady did her deliveries on a bike.
Where we live now, the postman comes in a van, parks and delivers in the local area on foot.

Good on them! I am happy to hear it. Plenty of Carers here do their rounds on foot or on bike.

And - instead of one person driving round delivering parcels, there are dozens driving to the nearest depot to pick up their parcels!

Good point Callistemon, not very environmentally friendly.
Went to a wedding recently where we all congregated at the home of the couple and packed our cars. This is where the after party was to be held in their barn.
We then all climbed on to a long trailer containing straw bales for seats and were pulled by tractor to the church and back.
It was lovely going through the village with all the local children running alongside and cheering. They seemed to enjoy it as much as we did.

Doesn’t your postman bring your parcels in his van Callistemon21, our still does and if they miss you you can request to have it re delivered two days after. They also pick parcels up from home to post for you., I don’t know if we’re just lucky but our service is excellent.

No, I was talking about a large city in Australia, Casdon where, as nanna8 said, the posties' vans have been replaced by pushbikes.

We have similar, but he walks around shouting RAG AND BONE!! Don't think he gives you a donkey stone though!

I've no idea what ours shout, we hear them in the distance but they never come up our road.

My window cleaner travels for miles on a push bike with a contraption on the side to carry his ladders, buckets etc.
