Why report so much ?

I am bemused by the amount of times GNetters seem to “report” other members for things which are frankly none of their business. I guess they were school snitches …
The result is the loss of longstanding members of GN through either suspension or their resignation (often due to some perceived “ganging up” aka. Disagreeing with other posters. )

Well done !

Thank you for that.

But it was you who introduced the scenario and asked me to comment. I thought it was a hypothetical scenario that you had devised. You omitted to say it was real. I would not have commented if I had known it was real.

StarDreamer
One of us is very confused here, and it’s not me. I certainly never introduced the scenario.

StarDreamer, I referred to children but this thread is about the behaviour of adults who should have the courage to be open with their peers if they report somebody. Do you believe it is acceptable for adults to report a fellow poster and not say they have done that, and why they have done that? I do not think it is honourable behaviour

Not honourable at all. Sneaky is how I would describe it. But then the world has plenty of sneaks around, sadly and I suppose, unless they change the rules, we just have to live with it. I hadn’t particularly noticed who was not around, though, until someone mentioned it.

It seems to me very improper to report a post but not have the courage to say openly that you have done so, the courage of your convictions. Sneaking to the teacher behind someone's back is what children do. In an adult it is traitorous, as dogsmother said.

No.

If a pupil in school is the victim of nastiness by someone who is always well-behaved when the teacher is around but is nasty when the teacher is not there, it right, proper and correct for another pupil to quietly and privately inform the teacher of the situation.

The badness is in the bullying itself, not in the reporting of it to the proper authority. That does not mean that the teacher should punish the person against whom the allegation is made just because the allegation has been made, but the teacher should at some time return to the classroom unexpectedly and catch the bully in the act.

SD, it was the use of the word grassing I objected to.
As a retired teacher and a member of the management team, I have a pretty good grasp of how to deal with bullying and the consequences of it.
What experience do you have?.

Trying to stop being bullied and the bully telling me I was a grass.

*Stardreamer*, did you suggest I am a bully. Please reply!

I will certainly to try to reply.

Could you say which post or posts to which you refer please?

A page number and a timestamp would be helpful please.

too many deleted posts, too little time confused

I expect Maximillian isn't aware of all the nuances of the site, seeing as he is new. smile

I have read the words quoted, and do not like what I read, jaxjacky. Words quoted are words which have been posted.

I would assume, Miss Adventure, that 'gnhq' means GransNet headquarters? I would think that people do have the power to cancel others by way of reports, which is what this thread is about, is it not?

Having lived under the fear of fascist rule, I understand very well the link made between the words quoted and the rule of the Taliban.

You mention having lived under fascist rule.

Yet you assumed that I was guilty based on an accusation.

That is not how it is supposed to work in this country.

WhitewaveMark2 said, a couple of weeks ago, that she had covid.
I haven't seen her posting since then.

I’ve missed her too, fingers crossed all is well.

Hi all, we've removed a couple of posts from this thread for breaking Talk guidelines, specifically:

We take a dim view of mean-spiritedness, ganging-up behaviour and rehashing old arguments.

If you have any concerns about a post or poster then please do report to GNHQ rather than airing them on the boards. We're always fine to take a look behind the scenes.

Here's the section from the guidelines about reporting posts:

Gransnet Forums aren’t pre-moderated; we don’t read and approve comments before they appear. Our policy is to keep intervention to a minimum and let the conversation flow.

That said, we will remove posts we believe to be obscene, racist, homophobic, contain personal attacks or break the law once they are brought to our attention.

The quickest way to let us at GNHQ know about a post (or thread) that you think should be deleted is to report it. You do this by clicking on the Report link, above and to the right of the post in question. We look at every reported post as soon as we possibly can.

So again, please do report - it's a huge help to us in keeping the boards friendly, supportive, and as free as possible of trolls and spammers.

MissAdventure Wed 06-Jul-22 09:28:14

That is exactly what happens.
A warning is given, with a link to the "rules".
It is then up to the person if they choose to carry on in the same vein.

Doodledog Wed 06-Jul-22 09:26:35

Good grief!

I thought I sometimes spent too much time on here, but all of this was going on under my nose, and I had no idea.

I don't want people to leave or be banned. Without presuming to tell anyone how to post, I hope this doesn't escalate further.

Oopsadaisy1 Wed 06-Jul-22 09:26:06

I’m glad I stayed off of those particular threads then, I have to say though that I don’t fully understand the ‘Argy’ humour so I have a chuckle then move off onto something else.

I report spam if I spot it, I did report one poster (who kept falling over with her receptacle) because ‘she’ was absolutely foul at one stage and I’m sure I told her at the time. I think the thread was taken down.

I’m sorry that some have been suspended if what is said on here is correct.

But why is GNHQ doing it? , can’t they just pop up and warn people on the thread if it’s straying beyond what they deem to be acceptable?

It makes me very wary to take part in anything ‘fanciful’.

MissAdventure Wed 06-Jul-22 09:25:03

You're free to assume anything you want to, Maximillian.

While we're on the subject of disappearing posters, where is WhitewaveMark2? Has she been bundled up and thrown out, too? There's quite a few political threads I'm surprised not to see her commenting on.

Lucca Wed 06-Jul-22 09:22:47

Thank you Jack Wild
I won’t comment any more other than to say accusations of bullying are usually exaggerated and the supposed victims more than capable of standing up fir themselves

timetogo2016 Wed 06-Jul-22 09:22:08

I have never reported someone,i do though think that some people do so as a form of bullying.
I have felt bullied a couple of times when i have given an opinion but tbh it goes over my head, and i take a few days off GN.

kittylester Wed 06-Jul-22 09:21:24

Two sides to every story Maximillian.

MissAdventure Wed 06-Jul-22 09:15:45

You don't need to explain yourself to anyone, stardreamer.
Do people honestly think that some users have the power to "cancel" others??

It is gnhq who decide on what is acceptable - not any user, or group of users.
