Poor Prince George

Poor George made to sit and swelter at Wimbledon on the hottest day of the year, in a jacket and tie! He should be in the garden, in the shade, playing in the paddling pool with other kids.

I too think George should have been in more comfortable clothing. I'm a republican but it's genuine (not faux) concern for a young child.

I imagine it's "damned if they do etc...."

Ah! Of course - thank you!

He could of had an nice open necked shirt and shorts on and still would of looked smart. They have him dressed like an old man.

Well rules is rules, as they say. My grandchildren have to wear blazers to and from school- even in 40C. heat. They are allowed to wear sports uniform if they have a sporting fixture last period. You pays yer money, yer takes the choice. He is not an ‘ordinary’ boy is he ?

... and rules were made to be broken - as they say.

And wearing a blazer in 40C is definitely (IMO) a rule that should be.

George may not be an "ordinary" boy, but like any other child, he can suffer from heat-stroke.

Some people can suffer enormously during intense heat due to their constitutional make-up, and no-one should be made to compromise their health because 'rules is rules' however much money they do or don't pay.

Just what Nadateturbe said.
I can already hear the cries of “The RF think they can ignore the rules when it suits them.”
That said, I have no idea whether he wanted to look like Daddy, didn’t want to be there, or complained about his clothing as I don’t know them personally and I don’t qualify for the royal box.?

Actually children tend to deal with heat better than adults. No, my comment is "poor males" who are so often expected to wear jackets and ties while females choose airy summer dresses. I don't see why there can't be an alternative summer outfit for formal occasions that males can wear. Like those posh safari suits for example. Matching cream linen trousers/shorts and short sleeve linen jacket without a tie or anything underneath.

Does it matter what George wears his personality shines through. I bet he loved the fact he was wearing the Wimbledon tie and he is getting used to having a public role something that he will have more of as he gets older. as for tennis coaching loads of kids play tennis, sport, fresh air, good for them rather than sitting on devices all day.

LiliWenFach44 Tue 12-Jul-22 12:10:46

Perhaps Prince George loves tennis and his parents give him lessons! My Grandson age 7 adores football and had coaching so why not. Old parents??? My daughter is age 49 with 2 children age 9 and 7 and she’s mega trendy!!

Annodomini. Hey! That’s who I like this ap. I learn such interesting facts!!!

I feel sorry for Prince George and the weight of expectations on the lad’s shoulders. I worry he looks a bit like Edward V111!

carolmary Tue 12-Jul-22 12:30:37

There is a strict dress code for Royal Box so I suppose even the Royal Family have to adhere to it. Even Lewis Hamilton was refused entry for being inappropriately dressed. Stuffy it's true, but isn't that part of the reason everyone loves Wimbledon?

I feel sorry for Prince George and the weight of expectations on the lad’s shoulders

Like many posters on this thread I was concerned about the weight of his formal and unsuitable clothing on his shoulders in that sweltering heat. Regardless of the royal box clothing etiquette that was inappropriate for a young child to endure.

Yes, as some have said, maybe it was his choice to dress formally. But I think an informed adult should have stepped in and helped him choose something more comfortable to wear. His mother knew better than to wear a blazer on top of her lightweight dress. I can’t imagine any right thinking person accusing them of breaking protocol if Prince George was dressed in summer clothing.

sharonarnott Tue 12-Jul-22 12:31:30

I have read before that George loves tennis so I wasn't surprised to see him there. I too thought the jacket, shirt and tie was a bit much but apparently that is the dress code for the royal box

Larsonsmum Tue 12-Jul-22 12:36:53

The Royal Box Dress Code rules are down to the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club. They insist on suits for males.

Juicylucy Tue 12-Jul-22 12:44:23

Royal box or no royal box, he should have been wearing what kids wear, not made to look like a mini William. Shorts and polo shirt would have looked lovely and been cooler.

bevisp1 Tue 12-Jul-22 12:51:01

Personally I agree with you, but he wasn’t the only one suffering. Both of him and William alike had jackets, surely they could have slipped them off whilst sitting there. Hope they had water with them? BUT, only a few months ago George & William were at the football match in football shirts, and so many criticized this & said being royalty should have at least been dressed smarter, ie shirt, tie & jacket! They can’t win either way. Maybe for the extreme hot weather there should have at least been a canvas canopy put up for the royal box, maybe that could happen for the future.

Theoddbird Tue 12-Jul-22 13:05:25

He looked as if he was enjoying it. He was asking his mother a lot of questions. He obviously loved holding the cup. I wonder how you lot would feel if your every move was criticised. Presume you were all perfect parents....

Lizzie44 Tue 12-Jul-22 13:06:54

The bigger question is why anyone in the Royal Box should have to wear a jacket & tie on a sweltering hot day. Wimbledon needs to move with the times and relax its dress code.

katy1950 Tue 12-Jul-22 13:11:31

Poor boy he looked so hot and uncomfortable there was no need for him to be there

Shazmo24 Tue 12-Jul-22 13:28:42

The Royal Box has the advantage of air con where they sit...hence why no one looks hot & sweaty

Nannina Tue 12-Jul-22 13:46:20

There are a lot of parents who pay for private tuition in areas from sport to academia, some for very young children. They can obviously afford Federar but it won’t do his career any harm either-he might even be doing it for free! As for his attire- it’s not something I’d inflict on any child but they are training a future royal and we all know that institution is all about outward show

HannahLoisLuke Tue 12-Jul-22 13:48:02

All three if the children play tennis and I’ve read that the royal box is air conditioned, though how that works when it’s open to the outside I don’t know.
I think George is in training for his role as heir, he won’t have a normal childhood for a lot of the time. It’s what’s he’s born into.

HannahLoisLuke Tue 12-Jul-22 13:51:50

Perhaps he asked to go and the dress code was explained to him and he still wanted to go. We just don’t know.
