Poor Prince George

Poor George made to sit and swelter at Wimbledon on the hottest day of the year, in a jacket and tie! He should be in the garden, in the shade, playing in the paddling pool with other kids.

Poor child - he must have felt so hot in tailoring, a jacket and tie. So unecessary. When my OH worked in the city years ago the ruling was that suit jackets stayed on until the temperature reached the high nineties. (Female staff could wear sleeveless items) I did suggest that the men should all slump to the floor as one with heatstroke - what stupid rules there are about dress.

StoneofDestiny Tue 12-Jul-22 14:11:35

Parents decision - the willingly accept every privilege going even if their kids are bored out of their mind and melting.

George, by the way, is anything but 'poor', born into unimaginable and unearned wealth.

He didnt look uncomfortable to me. No red face or shiny brow on my TV. Perhaps there was a cool air system circulating in the box. And perhaps he enjoys tennis with or without lessons from Roger. If I could afford them I would like GC to have lessons in all subjects from specialists at an early, why not?. Lovely to see a child actually sitting without a computer screen in front.

He was wearing the dress code that is obligatory in the royal box, regardless of who you are. In fact he was lucky to be there at all. Children are generally not allowed in there at all. The Duchess of Kent tried to take a young protege of hers in there years ago and wasn't allowed to. She never went to Wimbledon again after that.

There's a video in the papers today showing George complaining to his dad that he was hot and his father replies, "Don't worry, you'll be alright". Then his mum says something about he won't be in direct sunlight like other spectators.
So the child was uncomfortable.

Anniebach Tue 12-Jul-22 14:33:26

They must have been near microphones

Widnesbabcia Tue 12-Jul-22 14:50:11

I agree he should of been wearing a nice short sleeved shirt... but as for any lessons he has wouldn't we all get the best for our children/grandchildren if we could afford it

annboleyn Tue 12-Jul-22 15:05:46

Why this poor boy is dragged around I don't understand. He had to sit through hours and hours of Jubilee celebrations and then to sit sweltering through tennis whilst mum was cool in a short sleeved dress. These people need to come into the 21st century. He loves his football so leave him with that, he should be at home playing whatever he likes to do

Saetana Tue 12-Jul-22 15:38:39

He was in the shade and there is air conditioning of some sort - he didn't exactly look hot and sweaty. Another moan about literally nothing - just another excuse to have a go at the royals. The Royal Box has a dress code - remember the furore when William and George wore football shirts to a football match? They literally cannot win with some people!

Fast forward to the republic for me 25 Avalon…. Can’t come soon enough!

Geordiegirl1 Tue 12-Jul-22 15:42:12

The Lawn Tennis Assoc or whatever, insist on these antiquated rules. Even the players, especially the women, would prefer not to have to wear white shorts or pants/skimpy white skirts. I don’t enjoy watching tennis and hearing all the ludicrous screams and shrieks, so if they all get a kick out of these nonsensical rules, that’s ok by me. W and K have the chance to move the RF into the present but they continue to look like stuffed shirts. The days of a republic are in sight I hope. Btw, all of W and Ks children look like Kate’s dad, imo, which is at least, refreshing.

Saggi Tue 12-Jul-22 15:45:41

Doesn’t take money too much money to get a few lessons …tennis or otherwise , and getting the kids away from screens is simple ….don’t buy them screen in first place. My grandkids don’t have screens or a tv to watch …. They are suntanned …healthy …. running around with their friends outside in the evenings. And their school reports are excellent …. even computer sciences … don’t blame kids for sitting in front of screens. Put the blame firmly where it belongs …parents!

I don't remember a furore when William and his boy wore a football shirt to watch football.

I wonder if it was amongst those who read "country living" (or something) magazine, who have said what a little 'cutie' George looked in his suit?

Grandma70s Tue 12-Jul-22 16:00:51

I’m in favour of the monarchy, and I enjoy tennis, but that doesn’t prevent me from thinking George was inappropriately dressed, given the temperature. The men, too. It’s a rule that deserves to be broken.

Anniebach Tue 12-Jul-22 16:01:31

I taught my grandson the basics of tennis when he was 6, he then went for coaching, I am 100% sure he would have loved to
go to Wimbledon when he was 9 years old, I had to record afternoon matches for him,

Will a President ban Wimbledon rules

Lexisgranny Tue 12-Jul-22 16:19:20

Re the tennis coaching by Federer - surely it has been in the public domain for some time that the Federers are friendly with all the Middleton family, as well as the Cambridges. Lets have a bit of fair play here.

MissAdventure Tue 12-Jul-22 16:25:39

I don't care who coaches George.
Good for them.

It has nothing whatsoever with wanting a president or disliking everything the royals do.

President/royals; I'm not bothered which.

GraceQuirrel Tue 12-Jul-22 16:28:34

For all the moaners out there. It’s what they do. Leave them alone ffs!

Ellet Tue 12-Jul-22 16:37:34

Having been lucky enough to have seats next the royal box some years ago, it was lovely and cool even though a very hot day. The only person who looked uncomfortably warm was the rower Matthew Pinsent. I think it was more his ruddy complexion than the heat though.

Chinesecrested Tue 12-Jul-22 16:56:55

I shouldn't imagine George has any interest in tennis anyway. Not to the extent of sitting watching it all afternoon.

CathSoc62 Tue 12-Jul-22 17:27:54

When I was 8 I used to take myself off on cycle rides of several miles with a friend, or take a neighbour’s dog down to the river near us in the evening, collecting a friend ( en route )
and spend an hour or so throwing sticks in for the dog .
I went birdwatching with a friend from aged 8.
No one told me what to wear, and ‘yes ‘ I had a country childhood and it was MANY years ago, but if I had a passion for something I just WENT FOR IT !
So maybe Prince George has a passion for tennis and what could POSSIBLY be wrong with that?

MissAdventure Tue 12-Jul-22 17:31:56

Did you wear a suit and tie, though?

Lucca Tue 12-Jul-22 17:32:26

I find it very weird that a thread commenting on the clothes chosen for Prince George inspires accusations of rabid republicanism.

Does this mean one literally can’t say anything remotely critical about the RF ? (Apart from you know who of course)

CathSoc62 Tue 12-Jul-22 17:37:25

Actually, I AM a Republican !
I just think criticism has to be fair and not centred on the RF’s money , status or connections, which in the end doesn’t matter a toss . Did all his money, status and connections save William from having his mother die when he was 13? How would YOU have liked that ?

merlotgran Tue 12-Jul-22 17:43:12

William and George were not wearing suits but jackets/blazers and ties as the dress code requests.
