Poor Prince George

Poor George made to sit and swelter at Wimbledon on the hottest day of the year, in a jacket and tie! He should be in the garden, in the shade, playing in the paddling pool with other kids.

Aldom Mon 11-Jul-22 14:15:03

Prince George appeared to greatly enjoy and appreciate the mens finals.
He seemed relaxed and perfectly happy and comfortable as far as I could see. Above all, he was enjoying a very special treat with his loving parents. He clearly loves tennis. Makes me think of Princess Anne and her daughter Zara, with their love of horses.

Ailidh Mon 11-Jul-22 14:13:59

Maybe he just wanted to wear grown up clothes and be like his Dad.

BlueBelle Mon 11-Jul-22 14:09:43

He wouldn’t look unhappy nanny8 he doesn’t know any different does he That’s his life, poor little thing
I can see Louis being the one that escapes ?

BlueBelle Mon 11-Jul-22 14:07:37

I totally agree Parsley why dress a little kid like an old man ( I’m sure the dress code doesn’t relate to an under 14) but he was always dressed strangely as a 2 year old wearing high dark coloured socks
There may not be a royal family by the time it gets to him and then all this childhood time wasted, poor child

Farzanah Mon 11-Jul-22 14:07:10

We are now in the 21st Century yet younger royals have to parade in 1950s style garb. Just how weird.

nanna8 Mon 11-Jul-22 14:06:04

He probably wanted to look like his Dad did at that age. He didn’t look particularly unhappy to me. He seemed very interested when Novak fell over, typical kid.

Parsley3 Mon 11-Jul-22 13:59:11

Poor George. Groomed to be king. I hope that he decides that it is not for him when the time comes and passes the buck to his sister. As for his clothes, if a seven year old is choosing to dress like an old man then what sort of upbringing is that? I thought the Royals in waiting were trying to be modern by
exhibiting a common touch.

westendgirl Mon 11-Jul-22 13:49:57

More than likely there was a dress code for the royal box which the family stuck to ,perhaps so that they would't have commentators carping about the fact that they didn't stick to the dress code, who do they think they are etc. A bit like we have at the moment.

Mollygo Mon 11-Jul-22 13:43:26

It’s really good preparation for Prince George, (though I hope he’s not aware yet) that whatever he does or says or wears, he will always be subject to criticism in the media.

Calendargirl Mon 11-Jul-22 13:34:12

I didn’t watch the tennis, but caught a bit of last night’s on the News. Thought George looked thrilled to be invited to hold the trophy by Novak, and heard his dad say “Don’t drop it!”

As for his suit and no hat etc., I am sure both William and Catherine are well aware of him being in the shade, I don’t imagine any of them swelter in the Royal Box.

Why shouldn’t Roger Federer give him some tennis lessons if George is keen? If Adam Peaty gave him swimming lessons, or Freddie Flintoff cricket coaching, why not? It’s what privileged families are able to do for their offspring, plus an Elton education or whatever.
Makes no difference to any of us really does it?

Grannynannywanny Mon 11-Jul-22 12:59:24

I’m sure when the rules were set in stone saying suit, collar and tie were obligatory in the royal box they were intended for adult males not young children. Surely even for adults the rules could be relaxed in extreme temperatures. I think they need to revisit their rule book and have an update.

A few days ago a young female player was challenged on her underwear and her coach hastily came to her rescue and gave her own bra to the player so her game could proceed. Another 2 players went bra-less after their lingerie was deemed unsuitable.

Lexisgranny Mon 11-Jul-22 12:49:02

I read somewhere this morning that during the period of the match the Royal Box was in the shade, so no need for anything on his head. As far as I can see from photographs, no-one, male or female wore hats. However I agree he would have been more comfortable without the tie.

PollyDolly Mon 11-Jul-22 12:40:16

I was appalled to see the photograph of him this morning; shirt and tie plus a jacket and NOTHING on his head! Kate and William should be ashamed of themselves!

Glorianny Mon 11-Jul-22 12:37:32

I looked at some of the photographs and he does seem to be enjoying the tennis some of the time. But I also noticed that William had a lightweight linen type jacket on, and both the parents wore sunglasses some of the time. Evidently George doesn't need a lightweight jacket or protection from the sun with a hat and/or sunglasses. Poor boy!

Teacheranne Mon 11-Jul-22 12:28:43

I understand that all men have to wear a tie and jacket in the royal box? So I guess Prince George was just following the dress code but it was a shame that it was such a hot day for his first visit the the final. He looked as if he was enjoying the match though in the photos I saw. I expect he went home and jumped in the paddling pool!

missingmarietta Mon 11-Jul-22 12:19:08

I thought George wearing a shirt and tie and a jacket without a hat in the sweltering heat for what could have been 3-4 hours was ridiculous.

Royal or not what would have been the harm in wearing a cotton shirt and a lightweight jacket [start off with the tie/jacket then take them off for the match, put back on to meet people afterwards] and a cap. The sun was fierce on his head. I lost a bit of respect for William and Kate yesterday.

JenniferEccles Mon 11-Jul-22 12:18:39

I was thinking the same thing Chestnut
I’m certain the position of the sun would have influenced the siting of the royal box.

We also don’t know if George was there for the entire match.
He may have been taken away for a break in the middle as the tv cameras weren’t continually focused on him.

I’m sure his royal training has begun and that involves dressing in a way he may not necessarily choose.

Joseanne Mon 11-Jul-22 12:15:49

Just wondering whether the Royal Box is in the sun or in the shade? I would imaging it's in the shade.

I've a feeling the royal box would probably have its own air conditioning? And cushions on seats so your dress doesn't get stuck to your knickers!

Purplepixie Mon 11-Jul-22 12:14:42

I felt so sorry for him too. A little lad in a suit, shirt and tie on one of the hottest days of the year. Why couldnt he wear something cool?

vegansrock Mon 11-Jul-22 12:12:05

There’s a whole heap of criticism when the likes of the Beckhams share photos of their children, but the royals do it all the time - can’t be because they need to keep themselves in the public eye could it?

eazybee Mon 11-Jul-22 12:01:43

I have noticed the Rees-Mogg children seem to choose what they wear, and one boy seems to prefer jacket, shirt and tie; the others were more casually dressed.
Royal children were not always so much in the public eye, and I can understand why; what a torrent of criticism over a boy's, or possibly parents', choice of clothes.

BlueBelle Mon 11-Jul-22 12:01:39

Ridiculous anyone would think he was a prince ???
If it was his own choice shows what a childhood he’s having no boy would choice that attire

Daisend1 Mon 11-Jul-22 11:59:04

Aveline
Exactly but would Prince George been given an option.?

Elegran Mon 11-Jul-22 11:57:27

Perhaps that was his own choice? He seems to be quite a formal wee boy, and he will have seen that photo of his father (I think at Wimbledon?) in exactly the same outfit, so he may be perfectly happy to conform to the dress code. I think I would have chosen a light-weight summer suit for him, though - there are some really smart ones that don't pot roast the wearer.
