Exploding windows in heat

I’ve just read a story from someone whose double glazed window exploded in the heat today. They had blackout blinds fitted, but the glazier who fixed their window said that any blackout fittings could cause the window to explode.

Please be careful everyone.

That's terrifying, was that in the UK?

? runs off upstairs to move the blackout blinds

Asked Mr. S. about this, he used to sell and fit blinds, and he said with a black out blind there's no where for the heat to escape so over heating the window.

Makes sense when you think about it but still a shock to know it can happen.

Yikes!

Crikey. I’ve pulled all the blackout blinds down thinking it would keep the room cool…..

?
We do have some but not on the sunny side of the house.

If you have glass paperweights, ornaments etc on a windowsill, move them away because the sun shining through them will concentrate the beam and could be a fire hazard

I do that with mirrors and keep the curtains closed in one bedroom with fitted mirror doors- just in case.

Last week my daughter told me that she heard an explosion upstairs it was very loud ! She ran upstairs and found to her horror that the glass surrounding her walk in shower had indeed exploded !! Glass everywhere.
She had used the shower half an hour earlier!

I moved all glass or shiny ornaments off windowsills years ago after seeing a fire safety video about curtails being set on fire by sun reflecting off a glass vase! I now only put china or plants on window sills - I’m a minimalist anyway so don’t have many things out on display.

We had a giant hole burnt into the curtains upstairs as a magnifying mirror had been left carelessly so that light reflected off it .
If no one had been in amd smelt the burning then there would have been a fire .

Never heard of this but not that many have double glazing here. Maybe that’s why ? What we do get is buckled railway lines in Summer and the trains can derail. Always a number of children ,babies and dogs shut in cars and end up seriously I’ll or dead.

You don’t often see “black” blackout curtains they are usually white faced to reflect the sun. Yes sealed units can burst black would make it more likely.

Stay cool if needed take a cool bath or shower mid afternoon, again before bedtime.

Thanks for the information! I've just removed the blackout curtain from the bedroom used by my baby granddaughter when she visits with her mum. It's a thick, upholstery quality fabric that I used in an attempt to block out light when the little "darling" wouldn't go to sleep.
The last thing I need is exploding windows!

Goodness me, not something I'd ever have thought about, thanks OP!

I'm guilty of the magnifying mirror and crispy furniture - luckily my son saw the tiny plume of smoke from the sofa before it caught ... I'm very careful now.

There was a very serious fire in a block of flats next to West Hampstead Tube station a few years ago, the owner had glass beads in their balcony window that alighted - flames spread up the outside of the building and damaged flats above and below. Had tube and train lines closed, absolute chaos.
