Sleeping with the windows open

It’s possibly the hottest night of the year so far. I’ve just been up to pull the bedroom curtains, and noticed that not one of the ten or so houses I can see has their windows open, not even the small ones. I can’t imagine how hot it must be in their bedrooms.

I have at least one bedroom window open all year, and tonight all the upstairs windows are all flung wide, and will stay that way. Please tell me I’m not the only one?

Couldn’t stand the house …..35+ in every room. So moved into garden and slept on a lounger!

I am still in my conservatory, although it is cool at night thankfully!

I live in Spain- the temps yesterday were 43 degrees Celsius- but no, we don't keep windows open, there are too many mozzies, and the local cats are looking for a cool place, Ive woken up in the night a few times to find a cat in the hallway ! So we fitted mozzie nets, on the bedrooms, so at least at night I can leave a little window open and I can sleep! And cats cant get in !! Fans on too !

We left all the widnows open but unfortunately I have been badly bitten by something and have a massive itchy swelling

Ladyinspain Tue 19-Jul-22 12:34:14

Can I also say, Ive lived in Spain for 33 years, and these are the normal temps for June July August, but workers have to work, services still available, nothing is closed because of the heat! Tourists wouldn't be happy if they arrived to no staff in the hotels, or bars because "its too hot"! Im amazed UK cant get through a few days of higher heat than normal

Theoddbird Tue 19-Jul-22 12:37:01

You should keep curtains closed in this heat to keep rooms cool. Put fans on with bowl of ice in front. I live in a nartowboat and none of my portholes open. I keep bow and stern doors open.. I draw curtain across though. Boat is quite cool at the moment....

Open your windows. Put on your fan in the bedroom. Wear your thinnest pyjamas (low necklines etc), tuck your duvet in or remove it entirely, sleep on top of the bed linen, take a dose of hay fever medication to relax you :-) Get a grip - this isn't the end of the world - it's a step that way - your decisions will protect or kill your descendants .... it might be an inconvenience for you now ... but for the generations that come after us it's life or death .....

Do people in Spain not start earlier and finish earlier? Hospitality is different and expected in any country

I think most of have been through the menopause so remembering what I did through that 4 years: cool cloth on back of neck works for me.

Amandajs66 Tue 19-Jul-22 12:45:04

I have my windows open but apparently it’s better to keep them closed. If it’s super warm outside then we are just letting the warm air into our homes.
Keeping the windows and curtains closed keeps the house cooler.
I haven’t tried it as I like windows open all year round. x

Last night it was 25c downstairs in our house, so would have been a fair bit hotter upstairs. Like many others I close all the windows and blinds during the day and as long as it cools down enough I open them all to get a nice through draft in the evening.
We have a conservatory and right now it's 40c in there, so we keep the double glazed french doors closed to stop all that hot air coming in.
I did relent and buy a portable air con unit last week and it's been lovely at night. Put it on at 19c for an hour before we go to bed, then when we go to bed we put the fan on, close the bedroom door and the cool air circulates for long enough to help us get to sleep.

Supernan Tue 19-Jul-22 13:02:52

It’s just past midday here. The outdoor thermometer has just hit 40c. I have all the windows shut. All the curtains drawn. It is a comfortable 26c indoors. The windows will be open tonight.

TwinLolly Tue 19-Jul-22 13:07:04

All windows open here. Pity I can't leave the doors downstairs open too. It's safe to do so here but I don't want the local dogs to come in.

I use my car windscreen frost cover on the door between my home office and the conservatory. Silver on the outside so acts as a good reflector. The sun moves from east to west so the room is cooler in the afternoon. Currently 34 in the conservatory and 28 in my office. That and a desk fan is helping. Before bed I have a lukewarm bath which helps me sleep. Bedroom windows shut during the day and curtains closed. We have a chalet bungalow do upstairs can get quite hot!

Happysexagenarian Tue 19-Jul-22 13:12:00

We haven't shut any doors or windows or curtains since the start of the heatwave. Even if we sleep upstairs we leave everything open downstairs. If anyone walked in our dog would tell us. Last night we slept on sun loungers on the patio, it was lovely! I slept like a log.

The temperature reached 40.1 on our patio yesterday afternoon (it's south facing) but when we went to 'bed' it was only 25.

My Mum always shut the windows and curtains when it was very sunny. I hated it. I didn't want to sit in a dark gloomy house I wanted to see the sun!

Those covers are what I am using on some of my doors/windows at the moment, Babs758.

DS got a couple for me earlier this week, specifically for this job, and they have made a huge difference when hung on the outside of the windows.

I'm tempted to buy a few more and do some cutting and joining to make them fit the windows even better, and to add carefully-positioned straps so it's easier to get them / keep them in the right position.

We normally have all our windows open to some extent day and night.

Last night there were only three hours - between 5am and 8am - when it was cooler outside than in. So that was the only time our windows were open.

The advice over the last few days has been that if the air is hotter outside than inside then windows and curtains should be closed to keep the hot air out but if the air is cooler outside than in then windows should be open to let the cooler air in
Our windows were closed all day yesterday and open all night

jomo Tue 19-Jul-22 13:51:02

just a small note about weather. how many people pay lots of money to go abroad to sit in the SUN up to 35 upwards moaning about weather in U.K. we get a few days of heat and wow don't go out stay away from beaches cant go to work .

just think if our holidays were run like this there would be no food ( kitchen ) to hot. no bins empty to hot no shops open to hot . their weather go on for weeks and weeks . just a thought

Duvetdiva Tue 19-Jul-22 13:55:34

I keep my bedroom windows closed all year round. Mainly to keep out the bogeyman but also I was told that the night air isn’t healthy. Remember how the fog always came down during the night?
I do however open them during the daytime/early evening when the air is cooler outside than inside.

karmalady Tue 19-Jul-22 14:02:45

To do this most efficiently you really need to know the outside and inside temperatures, I always consult my weather station before deciding what to do. eg it was evens last night when I went to be 25 degrees out and in. Windows remained tight shut and last night in bed I used a quiet fan for an hour on a timer

This morning it was 24 out and 24 in, so I did not open any windows, knowing that it would get much hotter outside as the morning progressed. I took other precautions ie solar shading, like a sail, in stands on the patio to shade the 2 sets of french doors

I had perfect fit solar blinds fitted onto all the bedroom windows and onto each of the 4 french doors. Anyone can easily fit them, you just need accuracy in measuring. They create perfect darkness in the bedrooms and are white and solar reflective on the outside

My plantation shutters are over these blinds upstairs so I have multiple options

Can’t open ours wideasthecat wouldmake a run for it! Fans gping full blast and spraying codldwater on oneself helps

grandtanteJE65 Tue 19-Jul-22 14:30:04

Normally we always have our bedroom windows closed at night, not being addicted to the cold.

Heat on the other hand doesn't bother us, so the windows are open during the day and closed at bedtime.

Hellis Tue 19-Jul-22 14:34:56

I have my bedroom windows all year round, except on very windy nights, but I too have neighbours who never seem to open theirs. I feel uncomfortable without fresh air coming in even if it's cold. I do close windows and curtains on the sunny side of the house on hot days but open them once the sun has moved round.I saw a hack today about putting your duvet cover in the freezer before going to bed.Why would you even consider sleeping under a duvet in this weather!

hilz Tue 19-Jul-22 14:41:19

We always have a window open at night Lay under a damp sheet and slept like logs last night. Whilst it's been hot, windows in direct sunlight have been shut and curtains closed. Its been a lot cooler indoors and we only needed the fan yesterday evening. Earlier today we tested the theory of having windows open and curtains shut and the inside temperature went up a lot. It's taken us hours to get the house to cool down so we will definatly keep windows and curtains shut on the sunny side of the house if this hot weather continues. Lots of extra fluids too.
