Sleeping with the windows open

It’s possibly the hottest night of the year so far. I’ve just been up to pull the bedroom curtains, and noticed that not one of the ten or so houses I can see has their windows open, not even the small ones. I can’t imagine how hot it must be in their bedrooms.

I have at least one bedroom window open all year, and tonight all the upstairs windows are all flung wide, and will stay that way. Please tell me I’m not the only one?

I keep my windows and blinds closed when hot outside and open later on to air room before bed. I'm in a bungalow and nervous leaving them open when I go to sleep so just put them on a security latch. My bedroom was 30 degrees through the night, got 2 hours sleep before my alarm went off at 6am to walk the dog before it got too hot for her.

Bedroom windows open always at night, shut during the day in this hot weather, plus cold shower at night, no drying straight into bed and then sleep all the way through till about6.30 or 7. Only when it’s this hot.

As I live in a small bungalow near a Road, I do not keep my bedroom open when I am asleep. My house is well insulated and I live on North East Scotland. There is little or no need to keep my bedroom cool. The windows are open during the day to let in fresh air but I would not leave them open at night. When I lived in a first floor flat and worked night duty it was okay to leave the bedroom windows open during the day when I was asleep. It's not safe for everyone to leave windows open when they are asleep, regardless of the weather.

The information has generally been to keep windows shut to stop hot air getting into house. Obviously curtains drawn or in my case solar black out blinds down. On the whole use common sense. Eg don’t open west facing windows in glaring sun in the afternoon

You shouldn’t have windows open in this heat!
When you have windows open in these temperatures, all you do is let in the hot air. It was all over Radio 4 this morning. You should close windows, open when the air is cool and keep curtains & blinds closed. I lived abroad for a few years
And that’s what they do in this sort of heat. They close their shutters and windows to the hot air. My daughter in Oz tells me the same thing.

There was a man on Any Answers yesterday talking about putting tinfoil and cardboard on his windows to insulate the house. He was cut off for promoting some business or other, but the gist seemed to be that you put tinfoil on to reflect the heat and cardboard behind it to block the light.

I can't say I've tried that myself - I've got the windows open though grin

You could damage double glazed windows doing this!

House next to bus stop, bus often sits there for 20 minutes, so no open windows 6am to 11pm

He was probably cut off for promoting his replacement double glazing business smile)

I think the advice I heard was to keep your windows shut and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day to keep the cool air in. We have air con in our bedroom which we use when it is very hot, so def don’t keep the windows open when that is on overnight. When I walked today, to the dentist, there was a real split between those with every window open and those with curtains drawn and windows closed. Def feels cooler in than out when we come in from outside.

Joy241 Tue 19-Jul-22 19:58:35

Greyknitter I have been keeping windows closed and curtains drawn, as advised, but. bedrooms are downstairs, face north and shaded by tall trees so they are beautifully cool.

Flip side of that is the upstairs rooms, kitchen, living room etc are really hot. Walking upstairs there is a point halfway up where the hot air really hits. I have to remind myself that in the winter all that is an advantage

My windows are open all year, unless it’s really raining hard- they’re veluxes.

Slept with a big fan on all night last night. It reminded me of a recent holiday in Tuscany, where we bought said fan from the supermarket, in desperation.

my windows and veranda door are open all day, but i can't leave open at night, i stay just off a main road that has access to motorway and the clyde tunnel, we have emergency service vehicles with sirens blaring every night, because there is no other traffic it sounds even louder.

I always have to have bedroom windows open at night, even in the depths of winter. It’s the main reason why I could never live in a bungalow, or a ground floor flat.

Okdokey08 Tue 19-Jul-22 23:30:36

My bedroom windows are open all year round, rain sun wind and snow. Downstairs in the house is the coolest, and if you have a loft with windows open the windows in the hot weather as heat rises. BE CAREFUL with the cardboard & tinfoil on windows as it has to be on the OUTSIDE of the windiw, otherwise it will reflect the heat onto your actual glass window and can crack/ implode glass..otherwise it does work. I bought a £3 net from B & M for round my window in hot weather to keep insects out in hot weather.

The noise from the dawn chorus wakes me up , yes it’s been horrendous trying to sleep especially with health issues too. You’re lucky you can sleep without being disturbed

Socksandsocks01 Wed 20-Jul-22 06:08:04

No windows open normally. However we keep curtains and windows shut during the day to keep out the heat. Then about 8pm fling open all windows and internal doors for a few hours then close the lot before bed. Too close to the main road I'd never sleep for the noise.

Poppyjo Wed 20-Jul-22 06:49:29

During hot weather I always shut my windows and draw the curtains. I use a fan at night. My house is always pleasantly cool due to keeping the heat out.

Doodledog Wed 20-Jul-22 07:23:49

We are staying in a lodge just now, and I've been reluctant to sleep with the bedroom window open because of insects and generalised unease about a ground floor window being open. Last night it was so hot that I flung it open wide, however, and was just nodding off when the heavens opened and I had to wake up properly to get up and close it ?

Yoginimeisje Wed 20-Jul-22 07:31:10

Before I moved, my upstairs windows stayed open all year round. I've just moved to a ground floor garden flat. I won't sleep with the windows open for fear of burglaries. I heard of a women having someone climb through her open bedroom window, stepping on her whilst she slept!!!

Caleo Wed 20-Jul-22 08:55:47

I sleep downstairs and am afraid of intruders so I keep the main fire escape window shut. If I had a really scary dog I'd keep it open at night.

Yoginimeisje Wed 20-Jul-22 09:02:45

My dog thinks he's a very scary dog, especially when the postman comes, but in fact he's a cute little fluff ball grin

Not enjoying having the windows wide open as we have a vile new neighbour who is constantly on his mobile. He is a disc jockey so is used to shouting so everyone knows his business. In between conversations clearing his throat and spitting out it is truly sickening.

FlexibleFriend Wed 20-Jul-22 11:57:41

I have windows open 24/7 even in depths of winter.

A word of warning about leaving your downstairs windows open: Yersterday morning, a neighbour posted on our local Facebook page, that he had been sat watching athletics on his tv in the early hours of the morning. He had no lights on and the living room windows were open. When the tv programme finished, he turned it off and sat in the dark just enjoying a bit of cool breeze coming in before he went up to bed. As he sat there, a man suddenly appeared at the open window, pulled the window open wider, and started to climb in. The neighbour silently waited until the intruder was half way in and then said, very calmly, "Why didn't you knock, I'd have opened the door!" The intruder shouted abuse, scrambled back out and ran off. But as the neighbour ran to the door to see where the intruder had gone, he heard him shouting "RUN!!!" and saw 2 others, all dressed in dark clothing, running away. Obviously a gang of thieves, just looking for houses with open windows and easy access. Police were informed and said that several burglaries had already been reported.
