My most careless error ever was to leave my car parked opposite our house without the handbrake on.
The drive was full of builders vehicles.
It slowly rolled toward the house then gathered momentum and crashed into a stone wall that we were having built.
My husband realised what was happening and ran out.
“You remembered to lock the *** doors” he screamed as he stood and watched the moment of impact.

I had 3 builders and a furious husband staring at me with looks of absolute disbelief.

What’s your most careless act?

Leaving my wallet in a shop in a mall in a South American country, I thought I had been pick pocketed! Went back to the shop and the girl had turned it in to security. All the cards and cash were there. I rewarded her with a box of Lady Godiva chocolates.

Like you, mine was also marrying a man who would readily scream and swear at me in the street in front of strangers if I made a mistake. I ditched him.

Returning on a 12 hour flight following my daughter’s wedding, we were last off the plane/through customs. I needed to use the loo before our onward journey.

I entered the cubicle, hung my handbag on the back of the door, placing my wheeled cabin baggage next to the loo.
I eventually caught up with the rest of the family via a one way system when I realised I’d left my handbag hanging on the back of the cubicle door.

It contained my daughters Indian wedding jewellery, everyone’s passports and rather a lot of money!
I managed to find a very helpful cleaner who took me back through the one way system the wrong way - everything was locked and could only be accessed via an ID card.

Fortunately my bag and it’s stupidly expensive contents was hanging where I’d left it - phew!

A friend of mine went to London one day and drove back only to find her car in the driveway - she had driven a stranger's car (same make and model) home!

If this sounds implausible - I once had the same make and model of a car but a different colour from a friend, and our ignition keys worked in both cars!

Years ago I had quite an unusual two tone mini. I parked at Sainsbury's and when I came out started to put my shopping in the boot. A man who was waiting for my space kindly helped me to squeeze all the bags in. I then went to unlock the driver's door and my key didn't fit. Looking down the row I spotted my own mini 3 cars further up. The man waiting for my space drove off in exasperation and I was left red-faced to unload my shopping praying that the car's true owner didn't arrive before I finished.

I paid a visit to the local chemist to pick up a few bits I needed for my new baby son. Got home and unpacked my bags, then realised I had something with me when I went out. Ran so fast back up to the chemist to find my son sleeping peacefully in his pram outside the shop. I have never ever been allowed to live this down.

I drove off from a multi storey car park at Heathrow with a potty (empty) on the car roof.
I also left the bag of two duty free bottles beside the same car when I drove off. You might guess I was a bit flustered having picked up my parents from a holiday and coping with a stroppy 2 year-old in the back, getting totally lost on my way to Heathrow and car-phobic parents had combined to get to me.

I've done the leaving my handbag on the roof of the car - I remember the awful sinking feeling when I realised.

DH once left his car on the drive wuthoyt the handbrake on and, as he watched it slowly reverse down the drive, put his knee out to stop it.

Just before we flew out to spend a couple of years in Australia, we visited Thomas Cook to buy travellers cheques. Went back to the car, got in and drove off. A couple of minutes later I asked DH if he had the cheques, no he hadn't and neither did I. Quick journey back to travel agent to cancel cheques and buy more then back to the car park where we found the original cheques, £3000 worth, on the ground where we had originally parked. Someone (not me), had left them on the car roof....

Mine had the potential to be quite serious. Taking eldest out in the push chair, at the top of the drive turned to shut front door. As I turned back watched the pushchair sailing down our drive and somersaulting over the low wall. He was completely unscathed. I can still see it on my minds eye.

Made up a picnic basket for three. Travelled an hour to get to the picnic spot. Did a lot of walking around, exploring the area and when it was time to tuck into our picnic I realised I’d left the basket at home.

Oooh….so many!
Sent the children back to school the wrong week.
Worst public one was when my son was at prep school, sport big thing there, I parked the car outside to deliver a forgotten item. When I returned the car had gone….only to be seen rolling backwards down the bank across the hallowed cricket pitch ?, I ran after it and had to drive back up with every window full of small horrified boys. Quite a difficult apology letter!

A few years ago we had laminate flooring fitted in our living room. They fitted it. It looked beautiful. I thought I'd just give it a quick mop. I moved the settee forgetting that the feet in it were sharp. I scratched the flooring badly. I rang the shop begging them to come back and do something. Obviously they couldn't. I was terrified to tell my husband. Not that he's an ogre but I felt so stupid. It was put right eventually. Never again.

I had booked us for a few days break on Lundy Island in one of their little cottages.

The shore office called me asking if we were far away. I said "yes, because we're coming tomorrow".

"No", she said, "you are booked to sail today".

I had written the correct day on the calendar in the kitchen, and put the correct day in my calendar on my phone, but for some reason, I had the wrong date in my head.

Fortunately, they were able to accommodate us from the following day - but in the spectacular mansion-type house instead of the little cottage we'd booked. We had the nine bedroomed house all to ourselves - not too shabby at all.

Years ago I drove to a small retail park and stopped outside M&S, went in and tried some clothes on.

Then went down into the Food hall, back to the car with my purchases and could not find my car keys. I was convinced I must have locked them in the car boot when I got the shopping bags out.

I rang Mr Trotter - who left a game of golf to assist me. Before he got there a staff member came out of M&S and said “have you left this coat in the changing room?” .
Yes I had, and in the pocket was my bunch of keys.

I was very unpopular with Mr T. ?

One if my first jobs was as a Secretary to an ambassador ….I got the chauffeur etc ready and sent H.E off for a lunch with a foreign bank…..a week early. To say H. E. was cross is an understatement ?

Mine was yesterday-100% certain I was out early pm and I missed an Iceland delivery. Luckily Iceland staff were very busy so I was in a queue, it gave me time to check my diary to discover it is arriving today.

It goes without saying I bought a lot of the cold soft drinks yesterday which I also ordered from Iceland thinking the delivery was next week.

Set the house alarm on autopilot totally forgetting the visiting well behaved substantial dog who liked to prowl. Disappeared off to a shopping centre along with the dogs owners happily reminding them how bad the mobile signal would be.

Of course the dog activated the alarm. Our neighbour couldn’t decide if we had been murdered or invaded. Her husband climbed the fence to check the back of the house. Eventually my phone pinged with a message, I called, after being assured the dog wouldn’t savage her in she went and silenced the alarm. Poor dog was cowering in a corner and was very pleased to see her. Thank goodness she was a dog person and spent some time with him apparently assuring him if he wanted to move lodgings he was welcome to go to her. We returned with a bottle of wine for the dogs saviour. This must have been 15 years ago, every time we see our friends they remind me.

MrOops once went to the wrong airport, he blames his Secretary, his Client guest went to the correct airport and flew to their destination on his own, MrOops caught up with him in the evening.

Nobody blames MrOops.

Oopsadaisy1 Tue 19-Jul-22 10:29:37

We set off t9 the airport a night early, in my defence it was the night the clocks changed and I had asked the travel agent for a specific day to travel, so off we went at 10 pm, leaving the kids at home with relatives and had to bang on the door to be let in at 2am, fortunately I realised before we actually arrived at Gatwick, I looked at the tickets and asked MrOops what the actual date was bearing in mind that the clocks had altered.

Oops…….

Then we had to do it all over again the next night.

I blame the Travel Agent as it wasn’t the day I asked for.

Everyone else blames me and they mention it constantly.

MrJ left his bag with our passports and boarding passes in the Taxi. Only realised when we joined the queue at Rhodes Airport to check in. Jet2 rep was marvellous, found the number and managed to get the taxi back. Whenever I forget something now and he rolls his eyes, I just need to say 'Rhodes Airport' smile

My car was written off Sago about 7 years ago. Same situation. Car was parked on the road opposite to our drive with the handbrake left off! My car was pushed into the house (luckily no damage to the house).

Forgetting to load my OHs clothes into the Motohome for our holiday. We were in France before it was realised.
From then on clothes were always left in the motohome.

We had a bamboo curtain on our conservatory door. With the door open the lengths of bamboo kept getting knotted, so I tied two together, then the next two etc.I thought that might sto it moving so much. DH going out of the door caught his foot in the loops and did a perfect pirouette out on to the lawn. Then fell over. Sorry to say I laughed Not exactly careless but unthinking on my part.

humptydumpty Tue 19-Jul-22 10:18:32

Drove 2 1/2 hours to Center Parcs only to find I was a week early and they were full! Felt a complete idiot but the woman on the gate told me that the previous week a woman had gone to the WRONG Center Parcs!

The worst was when one offspring was at uni they had been home.I had to get them to the station early.
We had a double garage with an awkward exit drive. You had to reverse out quite a way and then swing around the house to drive out of the drive. I reversed so far to let them into the car but forgot I had not reversed far enough to clear my DH.s car. The crunch was terrible and I had pushed in the sides of an upmarket new Italian car as well as my own.
Unfortunately they had to go into the same garage ,the mechanics all came and laughed at me and asked when the divorce was.blush
