Couldn’t resist grin What do you all make of Prince Harry’s latest venture into the world of public speaking?

Joseanne Wed 20-Jul-22 14:55:35

We read what you said volver and aren't disagreeing, but we are fed up with Harry's lectures on the planet. I think the row about flights and private jets will rumble on and on because celebrities need to be seen at numerous far flung locations in order to promote themselves and their sometimes commendable causes. It's the celebs like H & M though who make constant speeches about how every minute decision, every tiny action and every little footprint we make can result in an enormous difference, and who then look hypocritical and stupid when they make contradictory decisions to fly 30+ times a year. Or are they all so entitled that they genuinely don't see it as any big deal?

volver Wed 20-Jul-22 14:42:37

Oh I'm glad everyone's taken on board what I said. hmm

Smileless2012 Wed 20-Jul-22 14:28:20

And his have been on private jets so the carbon emissions are even worse per person on board as there's so few of them.

So for example, if we are allowed to go on our annual trip to Europe using a airline such as EasyJet (my usual choice of carrier for short haul European flights) then who is Harry addressing when he has suggested in various speeches that ‘we’ (who are we) need to take fewer flights? Who should take fewer flights Harry? Would it be me? Or perhaps ‘we’ means Harry. Certainly Harry would easily it seems, be able to cut his carbon emissions by taking fewer flights. He’s taken a few just this year whereas up to now, I’ve taken none.

I agree with Lucca that the hand holding (although it seems excessive to me) is irrelevant. It’s the content of the speech Harry gave which the thread is about. And to me, the context of the speech from Harry’s situation.

Lucca Wed 20-Jul-22 14:05:59

Philip and the queen obviously not. Totally different generation.

As I said pick on something more important!

Calendargirl Wed 20-Jul-22 13:33:43

Did you ever see pictures of the Queen and DofE holding hands?

No, thought not, I can’t think of any off hand (no pun intended) but I suppose as he always walked a few paces behind, it would have been awkward.

Regarding H&M, now and again hand holding would be ok, but all the time? It just seems to say “Look at us, we are so in love, we can’t bear to be separated. It’s us against the world…..”

Center of attention! Meghan and Prince Harry were 'seated in the middle' of Robert De Niro's NYC restaurant where other patrons were warned by security team that they'd be 'asked to leave' if they snapped pictures of them

.....*South African newspaper The Sunday Times jokingly compared Harry's plight to that of Mandela, calling Harry the 'Duke of L.A.'
'He's in exile. Just like Madiba. No, sorry, of course, he was imprisoned for 27 years on Robben Island. Same, same-ish.

'Harry is imprisoned in his gilded pleasure palace in Montecito with a podcast schedule and documentary team following him around.'

Precisely. They are working for Netflix. But judging the bad position Netflix isin, for how much longer?

I’m inclined to say often that nobody knows what goes on in other peoples marriages and I think that’s relevant here. It’s their business. Interviews and speeches and book releases are fair game but their affection, married life, etc are not IMO.

Joseanne Wed 20-Jul-22 11:26:59

He didn't look too pleased either.

Anniebach Wed 20-Jul-22 11:25:58

Holding hands in Church, I have done so, held my parents hand when a tot, held my daughters hands when they were tots, can it be Harry needs the same hand holding he had with his mother

Smileless2012 Wed 20-Jul-22 11:19:51

It would annoy me Joseanne especially the back rubbing, it would make me feel like a small child.

Joseanne Wed 20-Jul-22 11:18:15

The holding hands doesn't bother me either way but the back and arm rubbing doesn't do it for me.

Lucca Wed 20-Jul-22 11:16:25

Anniebach

Why do they need a public display of their affection ,holding
hands whilst walking to their seats in a church !

Or….why not ? I’m quite happy to acknowledge errors of judgment from these two,in what they have said etc, and certainly I don’t think Harry is necessarily the sharpest knife in the drawer but why pick on silly things like the hand holding?

Smileless2012 Wed 20-Jul-22 11:16:12

That made me laugh lulu. TBH Mr. S. and I do holds a lot but maybe that's not a bad thing because when we do need too to keep one another from falling over, no one but us will knowgrin.

henetha Wed 20-Jul-22 11:11:26

I agree that does seem a bit overblown! smile

luluaugust Wed 20-Jul-22 11:11:26

DH and I always hold hands now or we might fall over!
Harry seems to think he has somehow inherited his mother's role and ability but it doesn't quite work and is beginning to look a bit desperate.

henetha Wed 20-Jul-22 10:02:17

I didn't hear this speech so can't comment. Just to mention the hand holding thing though. My partner (the one who dumped me) and I always held hands and I miss it more than I can say.
Maybe it's H & M's sign of affection for each other rather than affectation. Possibly?

Allsorts Wed 20-Jul-22 09:56:22

Don’t listen to him or his wife.

Sparklefizz Wed 20-Jul-22 09:52:07

suppose with 2 x p's. I can spell!

Sparklefizz Wed 20-Jul-22 09:51:04

The thing is, Meghan as an outsider criticised the UK so I supose Harry, as an outsider, feels free to criticise the US. Both of them are wrong to do that.

eazybee Wed 20-Jul-22 08:44:02

To return to the important issue of Meghan's need to hold hands. I have just seen the picture of her in today's DT holding hands with Gloria Steinem, wearing the most peculiar outfit of white shirt, belted exquisitely tailored shorts, and vertiginous spindly heeled stilettos.
Clearly she cannot walk without support, but I would fear for Gloria's safety.

Glorianny Wed 20-Jul-22 08:02:46

I looked up past speakers at this event Bill Clinton and Stevie Wonder are among them, so possibly Harry is a good choice. It's certainly raised the profile of the day which I bet most had never heard of.
