Mud pies. Using empty tin foil pie containers, and of course wet mud, playing pretend shops with my friends…

This reminds me of a thread I started about weird childhood hobbies. It was so funny!grin

There was lots of manky ‘perfume’ making with rose petals etc.

For a while, I was something of a mini Christo, and enjoying wrapping everyday objects with cling film confused

We made fish and chips... Small stones were chips and one large stone was a fish and then we wrapped it in a huge leaf for the paper...Happy days

I once made sandwiches for myself and brother.
Marmalade for me and Marmite for him - and sugar sprinkled in both of them.
My brother didn't seem very appreciative confused

Mud pies too, bevispl. I clearly remember mixing the mud and decorating the little cakes with daisies etc.

Little gardens on trays made with soil, stones, flowers and populated with snails!

Supermarkets used to sell little plastic pots of mousse with patterns, animals and flowers pressed into the plastic. We'd fill the tubs with plaster of Paris and when it set we'd paint them and give them to aunts and uncles as presents. I bet they loved them (not!)

ps. I was genuinely trying to be nice.

A clay horse at primary school - doesn't sound too weird, except the body looked reasonably horse-like, but the legs were about half-an-inch long! I clearly hadn't learned about proportion at that stage.

Rose hip syrup at school, strained through muslin hanging from an upturned stool, it took ages and tasted disgusting.

Oh yes, i remember collecting rose petals and soaking them in water to make perfume.....oh happy innocent days!!! smile

When I was about five I knitted a Christmas present for my Grandpa - when he opened it on Christmas Day, he asked me exactly what it was and I said: "A finger warmer" - I could not understand the general hilarity from the grown-ups that greeted this remark!! I think I get it now .......

We made mud lies and wrapped them in leaves and made perfume with petals and water.
My gs has a mud kitchen now both at home and at school so nothing new there apart from he has metal land and tools.

Necklaces from macaroni pasta painted with water colour paints. Whenever it rained, the colour just washed out and I had a neck full of soggy pasta!

I upturned a 3’ removal crate and it became my playhouse. I squatted in it like a mini sentry. It was full of worms & snails

We lived near my grandma. She used to make us chocolate balls of icing and cocoa. One day I made some balls using mud from the garden. I told my brother that grandma had given us some of her chocolate balls. He innocently put one in his mouth, and spat it out in disgust!
I laughed my head off.

Perfume, made from rose petal leaves that were left to stagnate in a bottle of water.
Dens, made from bits of timber and corrugated metal.
We made a house by draping a blanket over an up turned clothes maiden or under the table.
We also tried to slavishly follow the various projects on Blue Peter, usually involving an empty washing up bottle, glue, plasticene and sticky backed plastic.

Callistemon21 Sun 24-Jul-22 12:15:33

Rose petal perfume which looked and smelt disgusting.

I used to do Frenh knitting with cotton reels and make mats to give to people.

For a couple of years I was very keen on making plaster of Paris figures in rubber moulds; the favourite was a Guisso mouse figure and it was always difficult to get it out of the mould with the tip of his nose intact. Then I painted and varnished them an everyone got given them for presents!

A chemistry set, a toy oven which had a meths burner - it's a wonder I never burnt the house down ?

CleoPanda Sun 24-Jul-22 12:20:31

Necklaces made from melon seeds. My cousins and I loved these!

Chewbacca Sun 24-Jul-22 12:21:40

I remember those little kitchens Callistemon! Elf & Safety would have a fit now! My granny taught me to knit and I became so enthusiastic that I knitted egg cosies for everyone. Massive egg cosies they were! grin

Callistemon21 Sun 24-Jul-22 12:22:59

For Ostrich eggs? ?

geekesse Sun 24-Jul-22 12:23:21

When I was five, a school chum and I collected poppies and soaked them in a bucket of water because we wanted to poison our teacher ( who was also my aunt!). I got the idea from watching The Wizard of Oz.

Callistemon21 Sun 24-Jul-22 12:25:34

Little gardens on trays made with soil, stones, flowers and populated with snails!

RichmondPark with a small mirror for a garden pond!
They were lovely, we used to take the into school as there was a competition for best garden.

Oldnproud Sun 24-Jul-22 12:28:46

I tried to make myself some skis - out of papier-maché!

fairfraise Sun 24-Jul-22 12:35:31

In junior school we made papier mache heads for puppets, then painted them and made the glove part, hand sewn bits of material. They were OK for a while.

FannyCornforth Sun 24-Jul-22 13:42:57

I’ve just remembered something my mom made.
She French knitted a harness for her guinea pig, bless her.
Always practical (sort of!) and creative ♥️
