Following on from some comments in the ‘Common’ thread, what did you read and enjoy?

As a large family of boys and girls we had a mixture. The Beano (probably everyone’s favourite), Beezer, Topper, Eagle and Rover. Our cousins who lived nearby had Bunty and Dandy so we could read those too. Later on we had ‘Look and Learn’ and I started reading Jackie as a teenager.

I remember Petticoat. It was a bit like Jackie.

We had a stall on our local market that sold American comics. I remember reading Casper (the friendly ghost) and Little Dot. There were some others but I can't remember them now. They were so different from the UK comics.

They had weird adverts in the back for things like X-Ray glasses and sea monkeys

From Look and Learn
Nurse Susan and Doctor David are two young siblings who run a Toys Hospital where they play at being doctor and nurse. Toys are always getting broken and Susan and David know that often all they need is a little tender loving care to make them better again. Their friend Colin is happy to join in the fun – he drives the Toy Hospital Ambulance!

^ I’m pretty sure I used to have one called Playhour^
Thank you. I was trying to remember the name. I loved that comic.

Was that published around the same time as Jack & Jill? I seem to remember them from when I was 4 or 5 years old

You're right!
I don't think I got them regularly but definitely read both of those.

I wasn't allowed comics either, but managed to read them if my friends brought them into school. I remember, Girl, Beano, Bunty, Dandy, among others. My mother subscribed to a very worthy publication called The Young Elizabethan. I much preferred the comics!

School Friend of course and my brothers liked the Beano and Dandy, which I liked too,but they could not stand School Friend.

Yangste1007 Mon 15-Aug-22 11:54:50

Bunty and Judy and later on, Jackie.
I used to love the cut out clothing bit on the back. My brothers had Beezer and my favourite bit in that was about some skeletons.

Willow67 Mon 15-Aug-22 11:56:07

I used to read Bunty and Judy and sometimes Beano and Dandy that my brother read.

lixy Mon 15-Aug-22 11:58:35

Bunty and then Jackie for me.
I also used to read the Dandy and Beano aloud to my now SiLs when they were much smaller (any excuse!).

Grantanow Mon 15-Aug-22 11:59:13

Beano, Rover. Hotspur and Wizard. Parents wouldn't buy Eagle as they thought too dear and not enough in it.

Froglady Mon 15-Aug-22 11:59:26

I read Valiant - a comic I suppose really for boys but it suited me.

Gabrielle56 Mon 15-Aug-22 12:01:51

Dandy Beano topper Hotspur Diana Jackie...
I remember the midwich cuckoos being serialised on back of Diana I think?
All story about daughter of Chinese ambassador being kidnapped and she blinked morse code with her eyes "help, ! I'm being kidnapped!" To other drivers whilst going around Piccadilly Circus !! Hilarious as at work my colleagues and me would mimic this when we wanted to have a secret chat! We all remembered this exciting and dangerous story! And anyone remember Socrates Smith? I thought it was pronounced so-crates like beer crates! Sas type character dead strong loved him!

I had Bunty and Judy. I sent in a photo to Judy (I think it was) of my brother, sister and me buried in the pebbles on Hastings beach and won a swimsuit and towel! I was pleased as I didn’t have to wear my itchy woollen swimsuit any more, and mum was thrilled as she didn’t have to but me a new one. Win win!

Had Bunty delivered on Saturday morning I was allowed to read it in bed that morning, loved Saturdays, my sister had twinkle,

helgawills Mon 15-Aug-22 12:05:11

Wasn't allowed comics, hardly had any books.

Twopence Mon 15-Aug-22 12:05:37

I used to get Girl and my friend got School Friend, which we swapped, so two for the price of one.

Rileysnana Mon 15-Aug-22 12:06:49

I used to have Twinkle, then progressed onto Jackie, Smash Hits and Just 17. My brother had Beano and Eagle.

Nannina Mon 15-Aug-22 12:06:51

Bunty until I went to an all girls grammar where everyone read Fab. A classmate of mine won one of their competitions to go swimming with Reg Presley of the Troggs-the headmistress was not amused but we treated her as a star when the pictures were featured

Madmother21 Mon 15-Aug-22 12:09:42

We lived overseas in Liberia, in an American community…my grandmother used to roll up The Beano, Dandy, June and School Friend and post them to me once a month…I was so excited to get them! The American kids had glossy DC comics but they loved mine and were always swapping them! Happy days!

MarilynneT33 Mon 15-Aug-22 12:13:01

Bunty with the cut out dress up dolls. Diana and the annual every Christmas which I read from cover to cover. Then on to Jackie and the pictures I stuck all over my bedroom walls.

yogitree Mon 15-Aug-22 12:14:40

Bunty, Judy, Diana, Jackie. Eagle, Rover, Hotspur (dad's!) and his Commandos too (I still have those). I remember getting a photo published in Diana (I think) of my pony.

Nannapat1 Mon 15-Aug-22 12:15:21

In the 1960s, Bunty and Judy every week, also Princess.
I can remember being unable to sleep with excitement the night before Bunty or Judy were due to be delivered with a free gift: most remembered favourite gifts were a daisy bracelet and a 'diamond' ring!

Another thumbs up for Sunny Stories. Couldn't wait for Thursdays to come around and I was even allowed to collect it on my way home from school.
