If you live on the edge of the flood plain (it starts 20 feet away), then to have advance warning when the local stream is likely to flood, is very useful to have.
I do not have it as an app on my smart phone. I assume that is what you mean by 'ridiculous gadget' .
You may have difficulty using them, I do too, but that doesn't mean that I cannot see how useful they are. The satnav app recently enabled me to drive a friend 100 miles to a city I am unfamiliar with to take her to a hospital whose location I did not know, when the police rang her to say her daughter had been an emergency admission to hospital and was unconscious.
