I don’t read the articles but see the headlines, the poor couple must be seriously damaged by the constant attention and criticism they are receiving.

I’m not a fan but enough is enough surely!

I think that picture is pretty great. It takes guts to have your hair slicked down, wear a black sweater and stare straight at the camera. She has great bone structure. I don't think she looks scary. I think she looks challenging. But god forbid women should do anything but smile at the camera and look happy. People might start to think of them as competent, clever human beings, and then where would we be.

So, if you smile, does that mean you're neither clever nor competent?

The only things I know about MM are what I read on GN. I don’t read it all as she has been much discussed there since the marriage.
I neither read articles nor see headlines, not sure why or how I can have missed them ( but I have). Maybe I really should get out more.
Fact is the more people join in with this the longer it will go on.
I have no opinion of her I don’t know her and am sure she is just like most of us, but with more money and good bone structure. Oh and a Prince fir a husband. grin

If that message is addressed to me (one never knows when one isn't named):

(a) it's behind a paywall and I don't subscribe to TT so can't...

... (b) "keep up". An admonishment that always brings out the rebellious school-girl in me anyway.

Partly because I deliberately don't "keep up" on the antics or otherwise of a couple who hold only a minor interest to me. Though I am interested in the 'politics' and 'culture' surrounding the media's obsession with them.

Have a good day, Moses, Boses, or Boz. BTW, how are The Sketches going?

silverlining48 Tue 30-Aug-22 10:25:56

I just opened the Times 18 things clip and didn’t have to pay. Well I hope I didn’t .
Read first two nuggets of MM thoughts and decided watching the plasterer repair the kitchen wall was more interesting.
Maybe she isn’t like most of us ....smile

I saw the photo and wondered what the two green things protruding from her head were. grin

It's been very hard trying my mean look and I needed a good laugh, silverlining, thank you!

I can't take credit for the "keep up". Part of the Times Article Headline. Not directed at anyone!

I'll have another go. Sometimes they generously allow you to read something for free. I just got the box to sign up and couldn't get past it!

You won't have to pay if you didn't sign up - did you? I know you get x number of articles free, but don't know what happens after that as I dislike having to keep giving my details online which seems to generate more spam mail.

I've signed up to The Spectator for my 'right-wing' news. It's kind of more 'in depth' and interesting. Can't afford more.

I signed nothing Dickens. Thanks for the heads ⬆️

The Times article is written by Hilary Rose. A woman doing a take down piece on another woman. Click bait. Pisses me off.

Forgive me for not reading the whole thread, I read the first few posts over the weekend and thought I'd rather be gardening / sticking hot needles in my eyes than waste my time on yet another Gransnet hate piece on MM. However I'm in the office today and on my coffee break, so that's my tuppence worth. Women slagging off other women.

I am not a fan of Meghan Markle. IMHO, she is not a nice person. She started a smear campaign against the Royal Family and will tell all sorts of lies to tarnish their reputation.
So very glad that my mixed race daughter is not like her.

Glorianny She'd done a lot of work in Africa.

I didn't know she had. What work has she done there? I'm interested.

Predates her dating Prince Harry (in July 2016).

Of course not. But if you smile because someone tells you to, or it is expected, what else are you doing but fulfilling the role assigned to women of always being accommodating and happy? A lot of posts on this thread demonstrate how a woman who doesn't smile is regarded.

This was the tour in South Africa, not Australia.

Scottiebear Tue 30-Aug-22 11:56:12

I was appalled by the way Diana was treated. She was very young and don't think she coped well. So have tried to be sympathetic to Meghan and Harry. If they want to live a life away from royal duties, good luck to them. But don't go on Oprah and air your dirty linen, no matter how aggrieved you feel. That's not the way to stay out of the news. They must have realised they were courting huge attention on themselves. So not much sympathy now.

Coco51 Tue 30-Aug-22 11:59:09

They wanted privacy but actively court intervies and publicity. She has peddled proven lies, and cannot be taken seriously. Ultimately it will be Harry who suffers most

Cossy Tue 30-Aug-22 11:59:31

Oh for goodness sake, none of us know the real back stories of this couple, it doesn’t matter what do, they’ll be wrong. Anyone remember dear Diana “courting publicity” ? Speaking in an interview with Bashir, collaborating with Morton ?

I think Harry is damaged and Meghan us an actress and they have to support themselves somehow and gossip sells !

Pashmiya Tue 30-Aug-22 12:00:34

They are better off away from the Nonce uncle surely, it was bad enough the Royals calling their son names. The Royals are a toxic bunch. Sadly there are so many parasites living off of them in Government and Media circles that we will never get rid of them, short of a revolution and the British have proved they have no stomach for that.

I can do the Paddington Bear stare as well as anyone.

However, I did wonder what Meghan is trying to prove and for whom the mean look is intended.

It's just as posed as a photograph of a happy smile.
Photographers are clever.

cc Tue 30-Aug-22 12:02:37

She's just an attention-seeker and I have no time for her now, though I expected her to be fine initially.
She's not a first rater in any respect - but wants to be, hence the appearances on awful chatshows, the TV appearances and rest of the self-publicity. Just another lower grade wannabe celebrity I'm afraid.
I feel sad that her position within the royal family did not provide enough celebrity to satisfy her cravings, but most of all I feel sorry for her husband. I'm not sure he was expecting to be torn from the life he know.

springishere Tue 30-Aug-22 12:04:54

I read an article about the Duchess of Kent recently, who quietly resigned from public duties years ago. She has done charitable work every since. No fuss, no publicity, no self-congratulation, no popping up with another story every few months.

minxie Tue 30-Aug-22 12:08:25

Surely you need to read the article so you can properly judge for yourself.
I’m by no way a Royal fan, but the disrespectful behaviour of MnH is outstandingly off

*About the fire:*
Meghan has stated that following the fire in Archie's room they were expected to leave their baby son and attend an event which they bravely did out of a sense of royal duty.
As Lexisgranny says, there was no fire and Archie wasn't even in the room at the time. Another instance of Meghan telling lies!

Chestnut, Meagain lies constantly. Even the Archbishop had to clarify the lies she told on Oprah. She is an attention seeker with an over inflated ego. Hapless made a terrible choice with her. She wanted to be top dog and when she realised that was not going to happen she started stirring up trouble and making up stories to get attention.
