Would you expect your grandchildren to be layered up?

A mother on the tv this evening said she couldn’t ask her three-year-old to layer up this winter.

Agreed no-one likes wearing layers. I didn’t have the money to heat where I lived with my three-year- old in the 70s, and because I wouldn’t go into debt, my daughter went to bed with a long sleeved vest, warm pyjamas and jumper plus socks. Daytime, she was wrapped up very well.
Would you expect your grandchildren to layer up or is it a question of fashion?

Who else remembers the TV ads for central heating in the 60s -‘Mrs 1970’ walking around the house in a bikini with snow falling outside at night - all clearly seen through a huge picture window!

Norah

I'd expect parents to decide their children's attire, not me.

You and me both, Norah!

WItzend ......and the window was not even double glazed!

The worse bit is getting up to go to the loo during the night. Lying in bed, nice and warm and thinking do I really need to go, at least these days you get out of bed onto a carpet and not Lino

Of course, but if heating is very expensive, then common sense should prevail. I do think the OP came from the young woman interviewed on the news saying 'she could not possible ask her 3 years old to put on extra layers if its cold'.

I would think if a 3 year old was cold they would be crying wimpering and really miserable, and once the extra layer was on would be so much more cheerful.

I mean no one is suggesting that the child be layered up like a Michelin man. just put on a fleecy top, or a pair of trousers.

I am sure if the child was clutching a sharp knife she would find it possible to ask them to put it down. What is the difference? In fact, I suspect in the second incidence she would order the child to ut it down, or even take it from the child.

Parents would make sure their children were warm before they were.

I would (do) expect my grandkids to wear – with encouragement from their sensible parents – clothes that are appropriate wherever they are and whatever they're doing. Surely this is what all normal people expect. Ditto footwear.

Saying you can't ask (ask?! shouldn't that be tell?) a three year old to put on an extra layer or two when it's cool/cold is just plain silly.

Don't ask, don't even tell, just put on a jumper.

Many doctors receptionists and other office workers are required to wear summer weight clothing such as blouses and skirts or trousers all year round. Consequently many offices are over -heated.
I stopped donating to the Oxfam shop because they kept their shop door open in the coldest winter weather.

I would expect them to wear whatever the parents deemed fit.

Spherical toddlers. www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/health/toddlers-become-spherical-for-winter-20161110116965

I remember once, when we lived in a freezing cold house, my 20mo fell over outside and couldn’t get himself up again because he had on so many clothes. grin

Gaiters? Rememember when they came back with a vengeance after Flashdance? I think they will be back soon.
