Steak has gone up!

Picked up Sirloin steaks the other day and they were £9 each! and they were from one of the cheaper supermarkets.
Rather than give up steak altogether we've started having half each, with maybe a fried egg, mushrooms, toms and steak cut chips. Kind of make it like a mixed grill to stretch it.
Anybody else started doing similar?

We have been halving most meat for over a year. Not so much for the cost bit found a single piece each was far too much. Even halved a chicken keiv tonight.

We have too.

I don't seem to lose any weight though!

Hahha funny about that!

Bought two sirloin steaks with peppercorn sauce attached this morning for £3.75 in Sainsbury. Not the thickest of steaks admittedly, but plenty big enough for us and are usually nice.

A restaurant we go to in leafy Cheshire where actually a few weeks ago The real Housewives of Cheshire were filming an episode , was 3 weeks ago charging £34 for a fillet steak.
I had chicken and my friend had pork steak.

Probably going to get even more expensive as so many crops have failed.

Your local butcher will cut you steaks to any size you want and also suggest other, cheaper cuts of meat.

Thought I would treat myself to a small beef joint last week as no one else eats it, all the joints were locked inside individual security boxes ?
Says it all really, I went for pork in the end, prices are getting out of hand for sure.

I've been away for a few days to the southern coast of Ireland. Beautiful area by the way. Anyway we booked dinner in a top restaurant. A sirloin steak with mushrooms and chips was 35 euro. I couldn't justify that but hubby had it.

I had a Wagiyu beef burger at Hauser &Wirth in Somerset the other week. £20 and while it was very good as burgers go I still blanched at the price!

Madashell Thu 01-Sept-22 11:44:39

Eat cake?

Lesley60 Thu 01-Sept-22 11:48:31

The best steak I have ever bought is at ALDI it’s only around five pounds for a top of the range fillet, a little cheaper for a sirloin.
I have bought steak everywhere over the years and always stick to aldi even the most expensive supermarkets can’t beat it in my opinion

Haven’t bought steak for years. Use my slow cooker for mince, with beef put in lentils, lamb pearl barley, pork apple, tomato all with onions.
A lot of “fresh” fish from Sainsburys , cod haddock, etc is frozen then defrosted. Some of their fish is processed in Vietnam. So now I only have canned salmon from the North Atlantic.
But I have discovered there is a fishmonger coming once a week with fish landed in Lowestoft tHat morning. The difference in texture.
I saw a programme about chickens how they are in sheds in thousands, never cleaned out so living in their shit.
So now I only have free range.
I am sure that most people don’t know what they are eating these days.

We only get steak occasionally and like OP regularly become anaemic and find that steak really does give me a lift for energy levels. I have got it in this weeks delivery - Tesco have an offer on the Clubcard prices for £4 for finest rump steak or £4.50 for finest sirloin which is very reasonable. I also sometimes get the ready meals for ease and have noticed that they first went up from 3 for £6 to 3 for £7 and now the weights have gone down too - usual ones have gone from 450g to 400g. Only noticed as they were all unavailable in the favourites list and when I searched it offered the new size instead! Everything is shrinking!!

I live on my state pension …what’s steak!?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 01-Sept-22 12:17:42

I would rather not eat meat than buy from anywhere but my local butcher, who knows the provenance of all his meat (and of course will cut just the size you want); it’s all from animals bred and slaughtered locally. If in doubt when eating out I choose the vegetarian option. I refuse to support factory farming in this country or abroad.

I 2nd Aldi steak when it is on offer. Otherwise I buy the yellow ticketed reduced steak where ever I see it and put it in the freezer. I may pick up one steak one week and another another week until I have a matching pair. As others have said large steaks can be cut in half. My DH likes his steak rare and I like mine well done so it has to be cut in half before cooking.

Amalegra Thu 01-Sept-22 12:30:42

As I get older I find I fancy eating meat less and less. I would not call myself a vegetarian as I like to be ‘open to all offers’ but my taste for meat has definitely waned- in fact that applies to food in general! Perhaps my body is telling me I don’t need to eat so much as I get older? Either way, at least I won’t have to pay the extra costs of meat at the moment!

I find that it is the carbs that damage my weight so cutting down on meat would probably mean eating more carbs to fill up and therefore putting on weight! Low carb diet always was quite expensive as the filling stuff is the carbs!

Not with steak - a very rare treat here - but I've just decided that our weekly salmon fillets are getting rather expensive. There's no way I could possible persuade OH to only have half of one (I can imagine his response if I were to suggest it, and it would not be repeatable here), but I decided yesterday that I will halve my own portion from now on. Every little helps.

Sounds like OH. Still living in dark ages?! Does he make you do everything for him with little in return? Does he think sharing has 4letters? ! Well! Trade him in for the new model! Understands need to get creative with din-dins and even helps keep house in order too, you just test drive one- it's the future?

All retailers know meat provenance it's the law, don't make out that cheaper shops sell dodgy or uncertified meat, it's untrue and churlish!

kittylester Thu 01-Sept-22 14:11:53

My butcher goes to the farm and selects the beasts he wants. That's knowing the provenance.

aonk Thu 01-Sept-22 15:02:35

I recommend bavette or flank steak which I buy from m and s for about £6 for 2. We eat a fair amount of meat but I don’t stress too much about where it’s from.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 01-Sept-22 15:05:44

That’s not what I mean at all Gabrielle. A supermarket will know roughly (in terms of country of origin) where the meat it sells has come from but how many consumers read and understand the labels if it’s pre-packed? The meat may not be dodgy in health terms, but can be decidedly dodgy in terms of welfare. I like to know that the meat I buy has been reared using good welfare standards. My butcher uses the same method as kitty’s. Are you happy to buy, for instance, non-free range chicken which is much cheaper or do you insist on free range or else go without? Sadly, the Red Tractor symbol has been shown to be unreliable.

Taichinan Thu 01-Sept-22 15:28:55

For me chicken has to be free range - it's that or nothing. Same with eggs. I hate the thought of 'factory farming' That goes for all meat. Luckily I don't have a big appetite!
